11.2.2 Share and Folder Names
The nam e can only cont ain t he following charact ers:
• Alphanum eric ( A-z, 0- 9) and Unicode.
The NAS allows FTP access t o shares, folders or files with nam es encoded in t he UTF- 8 ( 8-bit
UCS/ Unicode Transform ation Form at ) form at . So your FTP client m ust support UTF- 8 in order to
access shares, folders or files on t he NAS with Unicode nam es.

Ot her lim it at ions include:
• All leading and trailing spaces are rem oved aut om at ically.
• Mult iple spaces wit hin nam es are convert ed t o a single space.
• Share nam es m ust be unique ( t hey cannot be t he sam e as ot her share nam es).
• The NAS creates aut om atic volum e nam es for ext ernal (USB) disk volum es. These are a t ype of
share, so t he share nam e you configure cannot conflict with t he ext ernal ( USB) disk volum e
nam es. “ Ext Vol1” or “ Ext Vol2” are exam ples of ext ernal (USB) disk volum e nam es.
• Folder nam es m ust be unique ( t hey cannot be the sam e as ot her folder nam es).
• The m inim um character length of a nam e is one charact er, t hat is a nam e cannot be blank.
• The m axim um character length of share nam e is 239 characters.
• Unicode is supported for share nam es, alt hough your FTP client m ust support UTF- 8. Full support
should be available in all Windows versions aft er Windows 2000.

folder t o view phot os in the shares t hat publish photos. The following figures show t he files as
thum bnail and list views of files.
