Brushes are made with natural or synthetic bristles. Natural bristles (china bristle)
should never be used with water based paint because the bristles absorb water and
become mop-like. The tips of natural bristles are flagged to offer more brushing surface
and hold more paint. Use natural bristles for alkyd-based paints. Synthetic (nylon)
bristle brushes can be used for any paint.
Check for thick, soft, resilient bristles held in place by a sturdy metal ferrule. Cheap
brushes lose bristles in the paint and will not provide a smooth finish.
Interior paint jobs can be handled with two brushes: a 3” flat brush and an angled sash
brush. The 3” flat brush is the brush you will use most often. Its tapered bottom will
paint a fine line, but it is broad enough to cover large surfaces. The sash brush is
angled for crisp lines on trim, molding, and window parts.
Rollers
A roller has two parts: frame and cover. Come in several sizes with varying thickness
and composition of the nap. Short nap about ¼” is used to apply paint to smooth
surfaces as gypsum wallboard and plaster. Medium nap covers used for semi-rough
surfaces. Long nap covers are used for rough surfaces as concrete block, stucco, and
brick.
Removing paint and wallpaper
Old paint that is peeling, blistered, or alligatored should be scraped smooth or stripped
entirely. Loose paint must be removed with a scraper. If the paint removal leaves
cracks and depressions, fill them with joint or spackling compound and smooth them
with medium-grit sandpaper.
Lead Paint
If a lead paint inspection is required, a full report would be attached if the levels are over
the HUD allowable limits. Only Lead Abatement Contractors would be allowed to
complete this type of project. See attached “Work Safe Paint Practices.” These
practices should be followed on any construction project.
Wallpaper
Using a wallpaper steamer or use glue-loosening chemicals that you buy for paper
removal. Scrape paper with a razor knife. When all the paper is off, scrub the wall with
a solution of hot water and trisodium phosphate (TSP. TSP is a cleaner.
