NYMPHS
One of the most successful ways
to fish for trout is with fly fishing patterns of nymphs.
The brass-colored bead head adds a critical bit of flash
to the fly and the weight of the brass bead helps keep
the fly very close to the bottom where trout are used to
seeing and capturing naturals.

CHIRONOMIDS
Chironomids are mosquito-like
insects that inhabit every water-
shed that will support trout. They
are the most widely dispersed
aquatic insect generation. In many lakes and slower
streams huge populations of these insects make them
the most prolific food source for trout, bass and pan
fish.

CADDIS FLIES
The caddis fly is recognized by their
bouncing, erratic flight over trout streams
and rivers. Unlike the mayfly and stone-
fly, the caddis are available to the brown and
rainbow trout as a food in four stages: the larva stage,
whether in or out of a case, the pupa stage, as an adult,
and as an adult female in the ovipositing stage. The
four different stages show how important the caddis is
as a food supply for trout. They probably represents half
the trout regular diet in the streams and rivers that they
inhabit.

CRAYFISH
Fly tiers have created many artificial
flies to simulate shelled creatures for
saltwater fly fishing. Freshwater fly fish-
ers use imitation crayfish to take a variety of fish includ-
ing trout, bass, and panfish.

WET FLIES
80 percent of all food eaten by trout
is taken under the surface of the
water making soft-hackle flies one of
the best ways to fool these selective
feeders. Wet flies can be tied in many different forms
but generally these types of flies mimic larvae, pupa,
and drowned adults insects.

TERRESTRIALS
Terrestrials are most summer fly
angler’s favorite type of flies to
fish. These patterns try and imitate
the local terrestrial insects in your
area. This group of patterns includes grasshop-
pers, beetles, mice and ants. Terrestrial patterns are
capable of landing many different species of fish and
are especially successful in the warmer months of sum-
mer (July-August), when the aquatic insect hatches are
fewer in numbers.
