Starting the Engine
1. Sit down on the seat and set the parking brake; refer to
Setting the Parking Brake, page 16.
2. Move the motion control levers to neutral.
3. Move the PTO (power take off) switch to off (Fig. 9).
4. Move the throttle control midway between slow and
fast positions before starting a cold engine.
5. Move the choke control to the on position before
starting a cold engine.
Note: A warm or hot engine may not require choking.
After engine starts, move choke control to the off position.
6. Turn ignition key to the start position to energize
starter. When engine starts, release key.
Note: If starter does not crank, move the motion control
levers slightly forward or backward to locate neutral.
Important Do not engage starter for more than 10
seconds at a time. If engine fails to start allow 30 second
cool-down period between attempts. Failure to follow
these instructions can burn out starter motor.
7. After the engine starts, gradually move the choke to
the Off position (Fig. 10). If the engine stalls or
hesitates, move the choke back to the on position for a
few seconds. Then move the throttle lever to desired
setting. Repeat this as required.
