Adjusting the Mower Belt
Tension
1. Diseng ag e the PTO , mo v e the motion control
lev ers to the neutral loc k ed position, and set
the parking brak e .
2. Stop the engine , remo v e the k ey , and w ait for
all mo ving par ts to stop before lea ving the
operating position.
3. Raise the mo w er to the transpor t position.
Important: Check the amount of twist
in the belt betw een the pulleys. Mak e sur e
it is onl y what is specified in Figur e 54 .
Important: Check and mak e sur e the
belt is installed into both the fr ont and r ear
belt guides ( Figur e 56 ).
4. Chec k the belt tension. T he spring loaded idler
center bolt needs to be near the top alignment
hole in left suppor t plate ( Figure 56 ).

5. If adjustment is required, loosen the idler plate
to adjust it ( Figure 57 ).
6. Inser t a ratc het or break er bar into the square
hole in the idler plate to adjust the tension
( Figure 57 ).
7. T o increase belt tension, rotate the ratc het or
break er bar to mo v e the fix ed idler until y ou
feel increased resistance and the spring-loaded
idler pulley stops mo ving ( Figure 57 ).
Note: Do not increase the belt tension
bey ond the point where the fix ed idler ar m
stops .
8. W hile holding the belt tension, tighten the
idler plate bolts that secure the idler plate
( Figure 57 ).

9. Chec k the distance from the r ubber stop and
the ar m of the spring loaded idler pulley when
the idler plate is tightened. It needs to be 0 to
1/4 inc h (0 to 6 mm) from the r ubber stop
( Figure 58 ).

10. Adjust the belt tension and the idler plate , if
necessar y , and tighten all hardw are securely
( Figure 57 ).
11. If the idler plate contacts the end of the
adjustment slot and more belt tension is
required, a small c hang e to the right side fix ed
idler can create more belt tension adjustment
( Figure 59 ).
