Servicing the Battery
Battery posts, terminals, and related accessories
contain lead and lead compounds, chemicals
known to the State of California to cause cancer
and reproductive harm. Wash hands after
handling.

Checking Electrolyte Level
1. With the engine off, open the hood to locate the
battery.
2. Look at the side of the battery. The electrolyte must be
up to the upper line (Fig. 61). Do not allow the
electrolyte to get below the lower line (Fig. 61).
3. If the electrolyte is low, add the required amount of
distilled water; refer to Adding Water to the Battery,
page 44.

Danger
Battery electrolyte contains sulfuric acid which is
a deadly poison and causes severe burns.
Do not drink electrolyte and avoid contact with
skin, eyes or clothing. Wear safety glasses to
shield your eyes and robber gloves to protect
your hands.
Fill the battery where clean water is always
available for flushing the skin.
Follow all instructions and comply with all
safety messages on the electrolyte container.
Installing the Battery
1. Position battery in tray with terminal posts toward the
engine (Fig. 62).
2. First, install the positive (red) battery cable to positive
(+) battery terminal.
3. Then install negative battery cable and ground wire to
the negative (–) battery terminal.
4. Secure cables with 2 bolts (1/4 x 3/4 inch), 2 washers
(1/4 inch), and 2 locknuts (1/4 inch) (Fig. 62).
5. Slide the red terminal boot onto the positive (red)
battery post.
6. Secure battery with J-bolts, hold down clamp and 2
washers (1/4 inch), and 2 wing nuts (1/4 inch)
(Fig. 62).
