CoolingSystemSafety
•Swallowingenginecoolantcancausepoisoning;
keepoutofreachfromchildrenandpets.
•Dischargeofhot,pressurizedcoolantortouching
ahotradiatorandsurroundingpartscancause
severeburns.
–Alwaysallowtheenginetocoolatleast15
minutesbeforeremovingtheradiatorcap.
–Usearagwhenopeningtheradiatorcap,and
openthecapslowlytoallowsteamtoescape.
•Donotoperatethemachinewithoutthecovers
inplace.
•Keepyourngers,handsandclothingclearof
rotatingfananddrivebelt.

Theenginecoolantmustconformtothefollowing
specications:
•JISK-2234(Japaneseindustrialstandard)
•SAEJ814(enginecoolants)
•ASTMD3306(specicationforethylene-glycol
baseenginecoolant)
Useoneofthefollowingcoolantblends:
•Glycol-basedpre-dilutedcoolant(50/50blend)
•Glycol-basedcoolantmixedwithdistilledwater
(50/50blend)
•Glycol-basedcoolantmixedwithgoodquality
water(50/50blend)
–Totalhardness<170ppm
–Chloride<40ppm(CI)
–Sulfates<100ppm(SO
4
)
CheckingtheCooling
SystemandCoolantLevel
ServiceInterval:Beforeeachuseordaily—Check
thecoolingsystemandthecoolant
level.
Beforeeachuseordaily—Removedebrisfrom
theenginearea,oilcooler,fuelcooler,and
radiator(cleanthemmorefrequentlyindirtyor
dustyconditions).
Every1,500hours—Changetheenginecoolant
Whentheengineiscold,thecoolantlevelshould
benohigherthantheCOLDmarkonthesideofthe
expansiontank(Figure69).Whentheengineis
warm,thecoolantlevelshouldbenohigherthanthe
FULL(HOT)mark.
IfthecoolantisabovetheCOLDmarkwhentheengine
iscold,itmayleakoutofthetankwhentheengine
getshotduringoperation.
