BatteryInspectionandMaintenance
1.Checkbatteryforcracks.Replacebatteryifcrackedorleaking.
2.Checkbatteryterminalpostsforcorrosion.Usewirebrushtocleancorrosion
fromposts.
IMPORTANT
Beforecleaningthebattery,tapeorblockventholestothellercaps
andmakesurethecapsareontightly.
3.Checkforsignsofwetnessorleakageonthetopofthebatterywhichmight
indicatealooseormissingllercap,overcharging,looseterminalpostor
overlling.Also,checkbatterycasefordirtandoil.Cleanthebatterywitha
solutionofbakingsodaandwater,thenrinseitwithcleanwater.
4.Checkthatthecoversealisnotbrokenaway.Replacethebatteryiftheseal
isbrokenorleaking.
5.Ifthebatteryelectrolyteisaccessible,checktheelectrolytelevelineachcell.
Ifthelevelisbelowthetopsoftheplatesinanycell,llallcellswithdistilled
waterbetweentheminimumandmaximumlllines.Chargeat15to25
Ampsforfteen(15)minutestoallowsufcientmixingoftheelectrolyte.
BatteryTesting
1.Performahigh−dischargetestwithanadjustableloadtester.Thisisoneof
themostreliablemeansoftestingabatteryasitsimulatesthecold−cranking
test.Acommercialbatteryloadtesterisrequiredtoperformthistest.
CAUTION
Followthemanufacturer’sinstructionswhenusingabatteryload
tester.
A.Checkthevoltageacrossthebatteryterminalspriortotestingthebattery.
Ifthevoltageislessthan12.4VDC,chargethebatterybeforeperforming
aloadtest.
B.Ifthebatteryhasrecentlybeencharged,useabatteryloadtester
followingthemanufacturer’sinstructionstoapplya150Amploadfor
fteen(15)seconds.Thisstepwillremovethesurfacecharge.
C.Makesurebatteryterminalsarefreeofcorrosion.
D.Estimatetheinternaltemperatureofthebatterytothenearest10ºF .
E.Connectabatteryloadtestertothebatteryterminalsfollowingthe
manufacturer’sinstructions.Connectadigitalmultimetertothebattery
terminals.
F.Applyatestloadof345Amps(onehalfthecrankingperformancerating
ofthebattery)tothebatteryforfteen(15)seconds.
G.Takeabatteryvoltagereadingatfteen(15)seconds,thenremovethe
load.
H.Usingthetableinthecolumntotheright,determinetheminimumvoltage
forthebatterytemperaturereading.Ifthetestvoltageisbelowthe
minimumvoltageforthebatterytemperature,replacethebattery.Ifthe
testvoltageisatorabovetheminimum,returnthebatterytoservice.
