Youcanusethebrakestoassistinturningthemachine,but
usethemcarefully,especiallyonsoftorwetgrassbecause
theycandamagetheturf.Youcanalsousethebrakesto
maintaintraction.Forexample,insomeslopeconditions,the
uphillwheelslipsandlosestraction.Ifthissituationoccurs,
presstheuphillturnpedalgraduallyandintermittentlyuntil
theuphillwheelstopsslipping,thus,increasingtractionon
thedownhillwheel.
TractionAssistisnowautomaticandrequiresnooperator
input.Whenawheelstartstoslip,owisautomaticallysplit
betweenthefrontandrearwheelstominimizewheelslip
andlossoftraction.
Useextracarewhenoperatingthemachineonslopes.Ensure
thattheseatlatchisproperlysecuredandthatyoubuckle
theseatbelt.Driveslowlyandavoidsharpturnsonslopes
topreventrollovers.Forsteeringcontrol,themowerdeck
mustbeloweredwhengoingdownhill.
Beforestoppingtheengine,disengageallcontrolsandchange
thethrottletotheSLOWposition.Changingthethrottleto
theSLOWpositionreduceshighenginespeed,noise,and
vibration.TurnthekeytotheOFFpositiontoshutoffthe
engine.
Beforetransportingthemachine,raisethemowerdecksand
securethetransportlatches(Figure35).

StarttheengineandrunitattheHALFIDLEpositionuntil
itwarmsup.Pushthethrottleleverallthewayforward,
liftthemowerdecks,disengagetheparkingbrake,press
theforwardtractionpedal,andcarefullydrivetoanopen
area.
Practicemovingforwardandreverse,andstartingand
stoppingthemachine.Tostopthemachine,removeyour
footfromthetractionpedalandletitreturntoNEUTRAL
orpressdownonthereversepedal.
Note:Whengoingdownhillinthemachine,youmay
needtousethereversepedaltostop.
Whenpossible,mowupanddownhillsratherthanacross
them.Havethemowerdecksloweredwhengoingdown
ahilltomaintainsteeringcontrol.Donotattempttoturn
themachineonahill.
Practicedrivingaroundobstacleswiththemowerdecks
upanddown.Becarefulwhendrivingbetweennarrow
objectssothatyoudonotdamagethemachineormower
decks.
Alwaysdriveslowlyinroughareas.
Ifanobstacleisintheway,liftthemowerdeckstomow
aroundit.
Whentransportingthemachinefrom1workareato
another,raisethemowerdeckstothefullyupward
position,shutoffthePTO,pressthemow/transport
switchtothetotheTRANSPORTposition,andplacethe
throttleintheFASTposition.
ChangingMowingPatterns
Changemowingpatternsoftentominimizeapoorafter-cut
appearancefromrepeatedlymowinginthesamedirection.
UnderstandingCounterbalance
Thecounterbalancesystemmaintainshydraulicbackpressure
onthedeck-liftcylinders.Thiscounterbalancepressure
transfersmowerdeckweighttothemowerdrivewheelsto
improvetraction.Thecounterbalancepressurehasbeenset
atthefactorytoanoptimalbalanceofafter-cutappearance
andtractioncapabilityinmostturfconditions.Decreasing
thecounterbalancesettingcanproduceamorestablemower
deck,butcandecreasethetractioncapability.Increasingthe
counterbalancesettingcanincreasethetractioncapability,
butmayresultinapoorafter-cutappearance.Refertothe
