Training
ReadtheOperator'sManualandothertrainingmaterial.If
theoperator(s)ormechanic(s)cannotreadEnglish,itis
theowner'sresponsibilitytoexplainthismaterialtothem.
Becomefamiliarwiththesafeoperationoftheequipment,
operatorcontrols,andsafetysigns.
Alloperatorsandmechanicsmustbetrained.Theowner
isresponsiblefortrainingtheusers.
Neverletchildrenoruntrainedpeopleoperateorservice
themachine.Localregulationsmayrestricttheageof
theoperator.
Ensurethatyouunderstandthehandsignalsusedonthe
jobsite.Followtheinstructionsofthesignalperson.
Preparation
Beforeusingthemachine,havetheareamarkedfor
undergroundutilities,anddonotdiginmarkedareas.
Also,beawareofthelocationofobjectsandstructures
thatmaynotbemarked,suchasundergroundstorage
tanks,wells,andsepticsystems.
Evaluatetheterraintodeterminewhataccessoriesand
attachmentsareneededtoproperlyandsafelyperform
thejob.Useonlyaccessoriesandattachmentsapproved
bythemanufacturer.
Markthejobsiteclearlyandkeepbystandersaway.
Reviewthejobsitehazards,safetyandemergency
procedures,andpersonnelresponsibilitieswithall
workersbeforebeginningthework.
Wearappropriateclothing,includinghardhat,safety
glasses,longpants,safetyshoes,andhearingprotection;
somejobsmayalsorequirethatyouwearareectivevest
and/orarespirator.Securelonghair,looseclothing,and
jewelrytopreventthemfromgettingtangledinmoving
parts.
