Alwaysstoptheengineandremovethekeyfromthe
keyswitchbeforeworkingnearbelts.
CheckingtheConditionoftheBelt
ServiceInterval:Every250hours
1.Removetheright-sidepanel;refertoRemovingthe
SidePanels(page46).
2.Inspectthebeltforcuts,cracks,loosecords,grease,oil,
twisting,orsignsofabnormalwear.
Note:Replacethebeltifitisexcessivelywornor
damaged;refertoReplacingtheEngineDriveBelt
(page69).
3.Installtheright-sidepanel;refertoInstallingtheSide
Panels(page47).

Belt
RemovingtheBelt
1.Removetherightsidepanel;refertoRemovingthe
SidePanels(page46).
2.Loosenthetensiononthebeltbyrotatingthebelt
tensionerclockwise(Figure111).
Important:Thebelttensionerisspringloaded
andmustpivotawayfromthedrivebelt.Pivoting
thebelttensionerinthewrongdirectioncould
damageit.Also,donotuseexcessiveforcein
theoppositedirectionofwinduporafteryou
havewoundupthetensionertothepositivestop;
otherwise,thetensionerarmmaybreak.

3.Removethebeltfromthepulleys.
CleaningandInspectingtheBeltand
thePulleys
1.Inspectthebeltforexcessivewearanddamage.
Replacethebeltunderanyofthefollowingconditions:
•Thebeltisfrayed,punctured,orsomeofits
materialismissing.
•Thereisembeddeddebrisinthegroovesoronthe
backsideofthebelt.
•Theribsareunevenorexcessivelyworn.
•Thebacksideofthebeltisglazedfromhighheat.
•Thereareexposedbeltcords.
Note:Youcanreuseabeltwithtransversecracks
(acrossthebelt)areacceptable,butreplaceabeltwith
longitudinalcracks(inthedirectionoftheribs)that
intersectwithtransversecracks.
2.Cleantheidlerandthedrivepulleys,andinspectthem
forwearorcracks.
Note:Replaceanypulleysthataredamaged,
deformed,orexcessivelyworn.
InstallingtheBelt
1.Routethebeltontothepulleys,butdonotinstallthe
beltoverthebelttensioner(Figure111).
2.Rotatethebelttensionerclockwiseandinstallthebelt
byslippingthebeltoverthebelttensioner.
3.Slowlyreleasethebelttensionertoapplytensionto
thedrivebelt.
4.Ensurethatthebeltisalignedwiththebelttensioner
andinthegroovesofthepulleys.
