Caution
If you leave the wire on the spark plug, someone could accidently start the engine and seriously
injure you or other bystanders.
Disconnect the wire from the spark plug before you do any maintenance. Set the wire aside so
that it does not accidently contact the spark plug.
Checking the Engine Oil Level
Before you use the lawn mower, ensure that the oil level is
between the lower limit and the upper limit marks as
shown on the dipstick (Fig. 6). If the oil level is below the
lower limit mark, add oil. Refer to Filling the Crankcase
with Oil on page 9.
Cleaning under the Housing
To ensure the best performance, keep the underside of the
housing clean. Be especially careful to keep the kickers
free of debris (Fig. 15).

4. Turn the water on high.
5. Start the engine and let it run for two minutes.
6. Stop the engine and wait for all moving parts to stop.
7. Turn off the water.
8. Remove the coupling from the washout fitting.
9. Start the lawn mower and let it run for a minute to dry
out the lawn mower and its components.
Note: If the underside of the housing has excessive grass
buildup, connect the hose to the washout fitting, turn the
water on high, and run the lawn mower for 2 minutes.
Stop the lawn mower and turn off the water. Let the lawn
mower soak for 30 minutes. Then turn the water on high
again and run the mower for another 2 minutes.
Scraping Method
If the washing method does not remove all the debris from
under the lawn mower, scrape it clean.
1. Disconnect the wire from the spark plug (Fig. 7).
2. Drain the fuel from the fuel tank.
