•Disconnectthebatterybeforerepairingthe
machine.Disconnectthenegativeterminalrst
andthepositivelast.Connectthepositiveterminal
rstandthenegativelast.
•Chargethebatteryinanopen,well-ventilated
area,awayfromsparksandames.Unplugthe
chargerbeforeconnectingordisconnectingthe
battery.Wearprotectiveclothinganduseinsulated
tools.
Jump-StartingtheMachine
Ifyouneedtojump-startthemachine,youcanuse
thealternativepositivepost(locatedonthestarter
solenoid)insteadofthepositivebatterypost(Figure
33).

ServiceInterval:Every25hours
Maintaintheproperbatteryelectrolytelevelandkeep
thetopofthebatteryclean.Ifthemachineisstoredin
alocationwheretemperaturesareextremelyhigh,the
batteryrunsdownmorerapidlythanifthemachineis
storedinalocationwheretemperaturesarecool.
Keepthetopofthebatterycleanbywashingit
periodicallywithabrushdippedinammoniaor
baking-sodasolution.Flushthetopsurfacewith
wateraftercleaning.Donotremovethellcapwhile
cleaning.
Thebatterycablesmustbetightontheterminalsto
providegoodelectricalcontact.
Ifcorrosionoccursatthebatteryterminals,disconnect
thecables,negative(-)cablerst,andscrapethe
clampsandterminalsseparately.Connectthecables,
positive(+)cablerst,andcoattheterminalswith
petroleumjelly.
•Checktheelectrolytelevelevery25operating
hours,orifthemachineisinstorage,every30
days.
•Maintainthecelllevelwithdistilledordemineralized
water.Donotllthecellsabovethellline.
