Tominimizedamagetothebatteryandallowthebatterytochargefully,usethe
followingslowchargingprocedure.Youcanaccomplishthischargingprocedure
withaconstantcurrentbatterychargerthatisavailablelocally.
IMPORTANT
Followthemanufacturer'sinstructionswhenusingabatterycharger.
Note:Usingthespecicgravityofthebatterycellsisthemostaccurate
procedureofdeterminingthebatterycondition.
1.UseBatteryChargeLevel(page5–35)todeterminethebatterychargelevel
fromthespecicgravityofthebatterycellsoropencircuitvoltage.
2.Usethemanufacturer'sbatterychargerinstructionsorBatteryChargeRate
(page5–35)todeterminethechargingtimeandrate.
CAUTION
Chargingafrozenbatterycancauseexplosionandcancause
personalinjury.Letthebatterywarmto15°C(60°F)before
connectingtoacharger.
Chargethebatteryinawell-ventilatedplacetodissipatethe
gasesproducedfromthecharging.
Thesegasesareexplosive;keepopenameandelectrical
sparkawayfromthebattery.Donotsmoke.
Inhalingthebatterygasescancausenausea.
Unplugthechargerfromtheelectricaloutletbeforeconnecting
ordisconnectingthechargerleadsfromthebatteryterminals.
3.Followthebatterychargermanufacturer'sinstructions,connectthecharger
cablestothebatteryterminals.Ensurethatyoumakeagoodconnection.
4.Chargethebatteryfollowingthemanufacturer'sinstructions.
5.Occasionallycheckthetemperatureofthebattery-electrolyte.Ifthe
temperatureismorethan52°C(125°F)ortheelectrolyteisviolentlygassing
orspewing,lowerthechargerateortemporarilystopchargingthebattery.
6.Beginningthreehoursbeforetheendofthescheduledcharge,measurethe
specicgravityofabatterycellonceperhour.
Note:Thebatteryisfullychargedwhenthecellsaregassingfreelyata
lowchargingrateandthereislessthana0.003changeinspecicgravity
for3consecutivereadings.
