AftercutAppearance
Thereareanumberoffactorsthatcancontributetounsatisfactoryqualityofcut,
someofwhichmaybeturfconditions.Turfconditionssuchasexcessivethatch,
“sponginess”orattemptingtocutofftoomuchgrassheightmaynotalwaysbe
overcomebyadjustingthecuttingunit.Itisimportanttorememberthatthelower
theheight-of-cut,themorecriticalthesefactorsare.

RefertoServiceandRepairs(page7–10)forcuttingunitrepairinformation.

FactorsThatCanAffectQualityofCut

Tirepressure
Checktirepressureofalltractionunittires.Adjusttirepressureas
necessary.
EngineRPMandmowspeed
Forbestcuttingperformanceandappearance,theengineshouldbe
runathighidlespeedwhilecutting.Checkandadjustthehighidle
speedasnecessary;refertotheTractionUnitOperator’sManual.
Usethetractionpedallinkagetoadjusttheactualmowspeed;referto
TractionUnitOperator’sManual.
ReelspeedAllcuttingreelsmustrotateatthesamespeed±100rpm.Usea
non-contacttachometer(phototach)toverifyreelspeed.
Makesurethatthereelspeedsettingiscorrectforthenumberof
bladesandmowspeedused;refertotheTractionUnitOperator’s
Manual.
Note:ThereelspeedisrelatedtotheengineRPMonmachineswith
hydraulicallydrivencuttingunits.ReducingtheengineRPMinlow
mowspeedsituations(clean-uppassesforexample)willhelpmatch
thecliptothegreenandreducetheappearanceofatriplexring.
Reelbearingcondition
Checkandreplacethereelbearingsifnecessary;refertoReel
Assembly(page7–19).
BedknifetoreeladjustmentCheckthebedknifetoreelcontactdaily.Thebedknifemusthavelight
contactacrosstheentirereel.Nocontactwilldullthecuttingedges.
Excessivecontactaccelerateswearofbothedges.Qualityofcutis
adverselyaffectedbybothconditions.
ReelandbedknifesharpnessAreeland/orbedknifethathasroundedcuttingedgesorriing
(groovedorwavyappearance)cannotbecorrectedbytighteningthe
bedknifetoreelcontact.Grindthereeltoremovetaperand/orriing.
Grindthebedknifetosharpenand/orremoveriing.
Themostcommoncauseofriingisbedknifetoreelcontactthat
istootight.
Anewbedknifemustbegroundorbacklappedafterinstallationto
thebedbar.RefertoGrindingtheBedknife(page7–17)forgrinding
informationortheTractionUnitOperator’sManualforbacklapping
information.
Rearrollerlevel
Reelandrearrollershouldbeparallelforpropercuttingperformance;
refertoLevelingtheRearRoller(page7–8).
Height-of-cutEffectiveoractualheight-of-cutdependsonthemowerweightand
turfconditions.Effectiveheight-of-cutwillbedifferentthanthebench
setheight-of-cut.
Properbedknifeforheight-of-cutdesiredIfthebedknifeistoothickforeffectiveheight-of-cut,poorqualityof
cutwillresult.
