1.Inspectreelbearingstoinsurethattheyspinfreelyandhaveminimalaxial
play.
2.inspectthereelshaftasfollows.Ifreeldamageisdetected,replacereel.
A.Checkthereelshaftforbendinganddistortionbyplacingtheshaftends
inV-blocks.
B.Checkthereelbladesforbendingorcracking.
C.Checktheservicelimitofthereeldiameter;referto(page).
3.Checkthethreadedinsertsinthereelshaftforexcessivewearordistortion.
Replaceinsertsifdamageisevident.
A.OneinserthasLHthreadsandtheotherinserthasRHthreads.The
insertwithLHthreadshasagrooveontheinsertface.Agrooveiscutin
theendofthereelshaftthathasLHthreads.
B.Usecorrectsplineinserttooltoremovethreadedinserts;referto(page).

1.Ifremoved,installnewplasticplugsintocuttingreelshaft.Plugsshould
berecessedintoreelshaftfrom34.8to41.4mm(1.370to1.630inches)
(Figure351).
Note:OneinserthasLHthreadsandtheotherinserthasRHthreads.The
insertwithLHthreadshasagrooveontheinsertface.Agrooveiscutinthe
endofthereelshaftthathasLHthreads.
2.Ifpreviouslyremoved,usecorrectsplineinserttooltoinstallthreadedinserts;
referto(page).Applythreadlockingcompound(Loctite#243orequivalent)
tothreadedportionofinsert.Tightenthreadedinsertfrom115to128N∙m
(85to95ft
lb).
3.Ensurethatthe2retainingringsarefullyseatedintothegroovesonthe
cuttingreelshaft.
4.Carefullydrivespecialwashersontoreelshaftwithtaperedsideofwashers
towardreel(atsidetowardbearinglocation).Installedwashersshouldbe
tightagainstretainingringandshouldnotwobbleasthereelisrotated.
