RemovingandInstallingtheBattery(continued)
2.Openscreenatrearofthemachineorraiseandsupporthoodtoaccessthe
battery.Removethebatterycover(ifequipped).
IMPORTANT
Becarefulwhenremovingthebatterycablesandensurethatyoudo
notdamagetheterminalpostsorcableconnectors.
3.Loosenandremovethenegative(-)cablefromthebattery.Afteryou
disconnectthenegativecablefromthebattery,loosenandremovethe
positivecable(+)fromthebattery.
4.Removetheangenut,carriagescrew,andbatteryretainerthatsecurethe
battery.
5.Carefullyremovethebatteryfromthemachine.
6.Installthebatteryinreverseorderandensuretoconnectandtightenthe
positive(+)cabletothebatterybeforeconnectingnegative(-)cable.Use2
wrencheswhentighteningthecables.
Note:Beforeconnectingthenegative(ground)cabletothebattery,connect
adigitalmultimeter(settoDCAmps)betweenthenegativebatterypostand
thenegative(ground)cableconnector.Thereadingshouldbelessthan0.1
A.Ifthereadingis0.1Aormore,theelectricalsystemofthemachineshould
betestedforshortcircuitsordamagedcomponentsandrepaired.
7.Coatbatterypostsandcableconnectorswithbatteryterminalprotector(Toro
PartNo.107-0392)orpetroleumjellytopreventcorrosion.
8.Installthebatterycover(ifequipped).Closeandsecurethescreenorhood.
Inspecting,Maintaining,andTestingtheBattery
1.Dothefollowinginspectionsandmaintenance:
A.Checkforcracks.Replacethebatteryifcrackedorleaking.
B.Checkthebatteryterminalpostsforcorrosion.Usethewirebrushto
cleancorrosionfromtheposts.
IMPORTANT
Beforecleaningthebattery,tapeorblocktheventholesofthe
llercapsandensurethatthecapsaretight.
C.Checkforthesignsofwetnessorleakageonthetopofthebatterywhich
mightindicatealooseormissingllercap,overcharging,looseterminal
post,oroverlling.Also,checkthebatterycasefordirtandoil.Clean
thebatterywithasolutionofbakingsodaandwater,thenrinseitwith
cleanwater.
D.Checkthatthecoversealisnotbrokenaway.Replacethebatteryifthe
sealisbrokenorleaking.
E.Checktheelectrolytelevelineachcell.Ifthelevelisbelowthetopsof
theplatesinanycell,llallthecellswithdistilledwaterbetweenthe
minimumandmaximumlllines.Chargeat15to25Afor15minutes
toallowsufcientmixingoftheelectrolyte;refertoChargingtheBattery
(page7–129).
2.Performthehydrometertestofthebattery-electrolyte.
