4.Locatetherelaythatistobetested.
5.Disconnectthewireharnesselectricalconnectorfromtherelay.Removethe
relayfromthemountingbracketfortesting.
Note:Beforetakingthesmallresistancereadingswithadigitalmultimeter,
shortthemultimetertestleadstogether.Themeterdisplaysasmall
resistancevalue(usually0.5ohmsorless).Thisresistanceisbecauseofthe
internalresistanceofthemultimeterandtestleads.Subtractthisvaluefrom
themeasuredvalueofthecomponentthatyouaretesting.
6.Checkthecoilresistancebetweentheterminals85and86withamultimeter
(ohmssetting).Theresistancemustbeapproximately72ohms(Figure258).

7.Connectthemultimeter(ohmssetting)leadstotherelayterminals30and
87.Thengroundterminal85andapply+12VDCtoterminal86.Therelay
shouldmakeandbreakthecontinuitybetweentheterminals30and87as
+12VDCissetandremovedfromterminal86(Figure258).
8.Disconnectthevoltageandleadsfromtherelayterminals.
9.Replacetherelayiftestingdeterminesthattherelayisdamaged.
10.Iftherelaytestingiscorrectandacircuitproblemstillexists,checkthe
mainwireharness;refertotheElectricalSchematicandWireHarness
Drawings/DiagramsinAppendixA(pageA–1).
11.Securetherelaytothemountingbracketandconnectthewireharness
electricalconnectortotherelay.
12.Connectthepositive(+)cabletothebatteryandthenconnectthenegative
(-)cabletothebattery;refertoServicingtheBattery(page7–125).
13.Installthehoodsaddle.Lowerandsecurethehood.
