1.Inspectreelbearingstoinsurethattheyspinfreelyandhaveminimalaxial
play.Thebearingballsmustbefreeofdeformationandscoring.
2.Inspectthereelshaftasfollows.Ifreeldamageisdetected,replacereel.
A.Checkthereelshaftforbendinganddistortionbyplacingtheshaftends
inV-blocks.
B.Checkthereelbladesforbendingorcracking.
C.Checktheservicelimitofthereeldiameter;referto(page).
3.Checkthethreadedinsertsinthereelshaftforexcessivewearordistortion.
Replaceinsertsifdamageisevident.
A.Thethreadedinsertsareinstalledwiththreadlockingcompound(Loctite
#243orequivalent).OneinserthasLHthreadsandtheotherRH
threads.TheinsertwithLHthreadshasanidenticationgrooveonthe
angeface.Agrooveonthereelshaftidentiesthereelendthathas
LHthreads;referto.
B.T oremoveorinstallthethreadedsplineinserts,usecorrectsplineinsert
tool;referto(page).
C.Toinstallthesplineinsertintothecuttingreel,cleanthethreadsofthe
insertandcuttingreelshaft.ApplyLoctite#243(orequivalent)tothe
threadsoftheinsert,threadtheinsertintothereelshaftandtightenthe
insertfrom115to128N∙m(85to95ft-lb).
