INTRODUCTION 2 2.1 IMPORTANT__________________________________________________________ The Ransomes Mastiff with a Petrol engine is a self propelled Cylinder mower. Chain driven traction drive and cutting unit drive. IMPORTANT: Do the maintenance indicated in this manual to make sure that the quality of cut is kept at a high level. This SAFETY AND OPERATORS MANUAL is part of the machine and must stay with the machine always.

INTRODUCTION 2 2.3GUIDELINES FOR THE DISPOSAL OF SCRAP PRODUCTS _____________________ 2.3.1 DURING SERVICE LIFE _______________________________________________ Used oil, oil filters and engine coolant are hazardous materials. Recommended procedures must be followed for their safe removal. If a fluid leaks, contain the spill to make sure that the leak does not flow into the ground or drainage system. Follow the local laws to make sure that leaks are controlled safely.

INTRODUCTION 2 2.6 ASSEMBLY___________________________________________________________ The Mower is fitted to a container at the factory and will need assembly before operation. Some tools will be needed for assembly. Discard the container according to the applicable local environmental requirement. Remove the mower from the container. NOTE: Refer to the OPERATION Chapter before you start the mower for the first time.

SAFETY 3 3.1 HOW TO OPERATE SAFELY __________________________________________________ ! WARNING EQUIPMENT OPERATED INCORRECTLY OR WITHOUT TRAINING CAN BE DANGEROUS. Know the location and correct operation of controls. Operators without experience must receive instruction from another person that knows the correct operation of the equipment before you operate the mower. Only use parts, accessories and attachments approved by Jacobsen. 3.1.
3 SAFETY 3.1.3 Operation a Never operate the engine without enough ventilation or in an enclosed area. The carbon monoxide in the exhaust fumes can increase to dangerous levels. b Never carry passengers. Keep other persons or animals away from the mower. c Disengage all drives and engage the parking brake before you start the engine. Only start the engine with the operator in the seat. Never start the engine with persons near the mower.
SAFETY 3 3.1.4 ROPS a The ROPS is a safety device. Keep the ROPS in the vertical and locked position. Always use the seat belt when you operate the mower. Make sure the seat belt can be released quickly in an emergency. b Only operate the mower with the ROPS in the folded position on flat and level surfaces when necessary. Do not operate the mower with the ROPS in the folded position on slopes, near sharp edges or near water. There is no roll over protection with the ROPS in the folded position.
3 SAFETY g Charge the battery in an area with good airflow. The battery can release hydrogen gas that is explosive. To prevent an explosion, keep any device that can cause sparks or flames away from the battery. h Disconnect the battery charger from the power supply before you connect or disconnect the battery charger to the battery. Wear protective clothing and use insulated tools when you service the battery. i Be careful and wear gloves when you check or service the cutting unit blades.

6 CONTROLS 6.1 THROTTLE CONTROL (A) Move the throttle lever forward to increase the engine speed which in turn engages the centrifugal clutch thus driving the machine. The direction of travel and blade engagement is determined by the gearbox selection levers noted in 6.5 & 6.6 B A C 6.2 OPERATOR PRESENCE CONTROL (B) Pushing the OPC down on the top handlebar allows the operator to engage the transmission, forward / reverse or mower.
CONTROLS 6 6.8 CHOKE CONTROL The lever on the right hand side of the carburetor will operate the choke control and should be used when the engine is cold. As soon as the engine warms up the choke should be returned to its normal running position (pointing to the rear of the machine). 6.9 FUEL TAP AND FILTER BOWL The fuel tap (B) is turned on by turning the lever vertically downwards. The tap is in the ‘off’ position when the lever is horizontal.
7 OPERATION 7.1 DAILY INSPECTION CAUTION THE DAILY INSPECTION SHOULD BE PERFORMED ONLY WHEN THE ENGINE IS OFF AND ALL FLUIDS ARE COLD. LOWER IMPLEMENTS TO THE GROUND, ENGAGE PARKING BRAKE, STOP ENGINE AND REMOVE IGNITION KEY. 1. Perform a visual inspection of the entire unit, look for signs of wear, loose hardware and missing or damaged components. Check for fuel and oil leaks to ensure connections are tight and hoses and tubes are in good condition. 2.
OPERATION 7 7.2 OPERATOR PRESENCE AND SAFETY INTERLOCK SYSTEM 1. The engine can be started but drive cannot be engaged until the operator presence system has been engaged. When the primary drive is engaged the machine will move forward, the cylinder will only rotate if the cylinder clutch is engaged. When the operator presence lever is released the engine will stop. WARNING Never operate the equipment with the operator presence & safety interlock system disengaged or malfunctioning.
7 OPERATION 7.3 OPERATING PROCEDURE CAUTION To help prevent injury, always wear safety glasses, leather work shoes or boots, a hard hat and ear protection 1. Under no circumstances should the engine be started with the operator presence system engaged. 2. Do not operate the machine or attachments with loose, damaged or missing components. Whenever possible mow when grass is dry 3. First mow in a test area to become thoroughly familiar with the operation of the machine and control levers.
OPERATION 7 CAUTION Before you clean, adjust, or repair this equipment, always disengage all drives, lower implements to the ground, engage parking brake, stop engine and remove key from ignition switch to prevent injuries. 8. Stop and inspect the equipment for damage immediately after striking an obstruction or if the machine begins to vibrate abnormally. Have the equipment repaired before resuming operation. Read the Safety Instructions. 1. 7.
7 OPERATION 7.5 STARTING THE ENGINE 1. Electric Start Apply the brake.Turn starter switch (C) clockwise to the first position, then turn further clockwise to the start position and engine will start. If engine fails to start within 10 seconds, wait a further 30 seconds before attempting to start the engine again. A B C NOTE: The starter switch will automatically return to the run position from the start position when released. DO NOT turn switch to the off position as this will stop the engine.
OPERATION 7 Before starting the engine, check or set the following points: 1. Check that the cylinder and landroll drive E clutches are disengaged and the brake is applied. 2. 8 MAINTENANCE & LUBRICATION 8.2 LUBRICATION Read the safety instructions Before using the machine for the first time lubricate all points. For recommended lubricants see section 8.1. Should the number of working hours that the machine is in use during the indicated period exceed the number quoted in brackets, then use the recommended ‘working hour’ guide as the lubrication schedule. 8.2.1 ENGINE Daily (Every 8 working hours) Clean the sump filler cap and surrounding area. Check level of oil in the sump.
MAINTENANCE & LUBRICATION 8 8.2.2 MACHINE DAILY (EVERY 10 WORKING HOURS) LUBRICATE THE FOLLOWING WITH ENGINE OIL: Cutting cylinder bearings (A). Front rolls, or side rolls, where fitted (B). Landroll bearing housings (C). Outer landrolls on 91cm (36in) machine. 8.2.3 APPLY CHAIN LUBRICANT Landroll drive chain (A) Cutting cylinder drive chain (B) 8.2.4 APPLY ENGINE OIL Bearings for pivot levers NOTE: Safety guard has to be removed to gain access to the lubricating nipple.
8 MAINTENANCE & LUBRICATION 8.2.5 GEARBOX CHECK OIL LEVEL (a) Release screws on both sides of cover and remove cover over gearbox and clutch shaft. (b) Remove filler plug (C) and using the straight dipstick check level of oil. (c) Top up, if necessary, to level indicated on the dipstick with recommended oil. (d) Replace filler plug, refit cover and secure with screws. CAUTION C CAUTION Contact With Engine Oil Can Damage Your Skin. Use Gloves When Working With Engine Oil.
MAINTENANCE & LUBRICATION 8 8.3 MAINTENANCE Read the safety instructions Should the number of working hours that the machine is in use during the indicated period exceed the number quoted in brackets, then use the recommended ‘working hour’ guide as the maintenance schedule. DAILY (EVERY 10 WORKING HOURS) C B A 8.3.1 COOLING FINS AND AIR INTAKE Check to ensure that the air blower and cooling fins (C) Linkages (A) and exhaust (B) are kept free of all grass clippings and debris.
8 MAINTENANCE & LUBRICATION 8.3.4 BATTERY (a) ‘Keep battery post corrosion free The battery is situated at the front of the machine under the clutch shaft cover. WARNING Batteries produce explosive gases and contain corrosive acid and supply levels of electrical current high enough to cause burns. WARNING Battery posts, terminals and related accessories contain lead and lead compounds. WASH HANDS AFTER HANDLING WARNING Wear eye protection when servicing battery.
MAINTENANCE & LUBRICATION 8 8.3.5 CLEAN FUEL FILTER ELEMENT C EVERY 100 WORKING HOURS (a) Close the fuel tap (A) (handle horizontal). (b) Unscrew and remove the bowl (B). (c) Clean out the filter bowl thoroughly to remove all sediment and water. (d) Clean filter screen (C). (d) Replace Screen & bowl with sealing ring. Open fuel tap and check for leaks. 9 ADJUSTMENTS 9.1 HEIGHT OF CUT ADJUSTMENT The cutting height is determined by the position of the front rolls in relation to the bottom blade; variation of this setting is made by adjusting the front roll: 1. 2. 3. Loosen the bolts securing the front roll brackets on both sides of the machine. Set the roll at the required height - raise the height of cut by lowering the front roll and reverse the procedure to reduce the height of cut. Check that the setting is the same onboth sides of the machine.
ADJUSTMENTS 9 9.3 CYLINDER TO BOTTOM BLADE ADJUSTMENT To check that the cutting cylinder is set correctly to the bottom blade: tilt the machine back, hold a thin piece of paper between the edge of the blade and spiral cutters, and turn the cylinder manually. Wear gloves and keep hands clear of the blade The paper should be cut cleanly along the length of the bottom blade; if not, some adjustment is necessary, DO NOT OVERTIGHTEN.
9 ADJUSTMENTS 9.5 CHAIN TENSIONERS Automatic adjustment Self adjusting Chain Tensioners need No adjustment. 9.6 BRAKE If adjustment is necessary: 1. Slacken the locknut (A). 2. Turn the adjusting screw (B) anti-clockwise. 3. Re-tighten the locknut. Make certain that after adjusting there is still some slack movement on the lever to avoid the brake shoes rubbing against the landroll when the brake is disengaged.
ADJUSTMENTS 9 9.7 CLUTCH CONTROLS The clutch controls have been accurately set. Should any adjustments be necessary contact your local service centre. 9.8 REMOVING THE CUTTING CYLINDER AND BOTTOM BLADE ASSEMBLY 1. Remove the chaincase and the cylinder drive chain. 2. Tilt the machine back until it rests on the handles. Ensure ithe machine is fully supported before continuing 3. Remove the front roll by extracting the pivot studs (A) and adjusting bolts (B) from both sides of the machine. 4.
9 ADJUSTMENTS 9.10 BALANCE BAR (PEDESTRIAN MACHINES ONLY) When the machine is used without the grassbox fitted, the balance bar (Fig. 39), fitted at the base of the handle, must be removed and fitted to the grassbox arms. 9.11 SEAT (STEERING SEAT) The seat is adjustable forwards or backwards. (a) Release setscrews underneath mounting and slide seat to required position. (b) Retighten screws after adjusting. 9.
ADJUSTMENTS 9 9.13 TESTING GEAR SELECTION Perform the following tests to determine the correct function of the gear selection mechanism; do not use the machine until any failures have been rectified 1. Select forward drive using the gear lever, check the gear lever is still free to move and does not catch in the gate. 2. Select reverse gear using the gear lever. It should be possible to do this without using excess force and without the lever catching the gate. 3.
9 ADJUSTMENTS 8. Change the length of the gear lever by rotating the clevis joint until the holes in the clevis joint and the hole in the bellcrank align. 9. Refit the locating pin and repeat the checks detailed in section 9.13. 10. If all checks are passed extend the gear lever by unscrewing the clevis joint by half a rotation and replacing the locating pin. 11. Repeat steps 8 & 9 until the gear lever sticks in the gate as shown in section 9.13.
ACCESSORIES 10 10.1 TRAILING SEAT (PEDESTRIAN MACHINE) LBMA029 - TRAILING SEAT ON IRON ROLLS If required, a trailing seat, with adjustable drawbar length, may be attached to the machine by means of a single pin coupling. An EU Certificate of Incorporation is included in this manual 10.2 STEERING SEAT LMAC253 - Kit - Mastiff Steering Seat Serial No’s FP & FN A steering seat is attached to the machine by removing the frame and handle bars and replacing in the same location with the frame supplied.
11 PROBLEM SOLVING 11.1 PROBLEM SOLVING GENERAL FAULT REMEDY variations in the height of cut grass across the width of cut Front rolls are not square with bottom blade. Make necessary adjustment as per instruction in section 9.1 Grass is cut unevenly in wavy or hummocky fashion Alignment of cutting cylinder has been upset, probably through running into an obstruction. Consult your local service centre. Grass is torn off, instead of being cut evenly Adjust cutting cylinder to bottom blade.

6 6.1 BEDIENUNGSELEMENTE HANDGASHEBEL (A) Den Gashebel nach vorne schieben, um die Motordrehzahl zu erhöhen. Dadurch wird die Fliehkraftkupplung eingelegt, wodurch die Maschine angetrieben wird. Die Fahrtrichtung und das Einkuppeln der Messer wird durch die Getriebeschalthebel festgelegt, wie unter 6.5 und 6.6 beschrieben. 6.
6 BEDIENUNGSELEMENTE 6.8 CHOKEZUG Der Hebel rechts neben dem Vergaser betätigt den Chokezug. Dieser ist zu verwenden, wenn der Motor kalt ist. Sobald sich der Motor erwärmt, ist der Choke wieder in die Normalstellung zu bringen (zum Rückende der Maschine gerichtet). 6.9 A KRAFTSTOFFHAHN UND FILTERGEHÄUSE Um den Kraftstoffhahn (B) zu öffnen, ist der Hebel senkrecht nach unten zu drehen. Der Hahn ist geschlossen, wenn der Hebel waagerecht steht.
7 BETRIEB 7.1 TÄGLICHE ÜBERPRÜFUNGEN VORSICHT Die Inspektion muss täglich ausgeführt werden, wenn der Motor abgestellt ist und alle Betriebsflüssigkeiten kalt sind. Schneidvorrichtungen auf den Boden absenken, Feststellbremse anziehen, Motor abstellen und Zündschlüssel abziehen. 1. Die ganze Einheit visuell überprüfen und nach auf Anzeichen von Verschleiß, loser Teile oder fehlender oder beschädigte Teile untersuchen.
7 BETRIEB 7.2 FAHRERANWESENHEITS- UND SICHERHEITSVERRIEGELUNGSSYSTEM 1. Der Motor kann zwar gestartet werden, aber ein Gang kann erst dann eingelegt werden, wenn das OPCSystem aktiviert worden ist. Bei eingekuppeltem Hauptantrieb fährt die Maschine vorwärts, aber der Zylinder dreht sich nur, wenn die Zylinderkupplung eingelegt worden ist. Wenn die Handgriffe losgelassen werden, hält der Motor an.
7 BETRIEB 7.3 BETRIEBSVERFAHREN VORSICHT Um Verletzungen zu vermeiden, sind immer Schutzbrille, Lederarbeitsschuhe oder – stiefel, ein Schutzhelm und Gehörschutz zu tragen. 1. Unter keinen Umständen darf der Motor gestartet werden, wenn das Bediener-Totmannsystem aktiviert wurde. 2. Die Maschine oder die Zubehörteile nicht mit lockeren, beschädigten oder fehlenden Komponenten betreiben. Soweit es möglich ist, trockenes Gras mähen. 3.
7 BETRIEB WARNUNG Bevor Sie dieses Gerät reinigen, nachstellen oder reparieren, kuppeln Sie immer zunächst alle Antrieb aus, senken Sie die Einrichtungsteile auf den Boden, legen Sie die Feststellbremse an, schalten Sie den Motor ab und ziehen den Zündschlüssel ab, um Verletzungen zu vermeiden. 8. Stoppen Sie nach Auftreffen auf ein Hindernis oder wenn die Maschine beginnt, abnormal zu vibrieren, das Gerät sofort und untersuchen Sie es. Lassen Sie das Gerät vor Wiederinbetriebnahme reparieren.
7 BETRIEB 7.5 MOTOR ANLASSEN 1. Elektrostarter Bremse anziehen. Den Starterschalter (C) im Uhrzeigersinn auf die erste Position drehen, dann weiter im Uhrzeigersinn in die Startposition drehen, worauf der Motor startet. Wenn der Motor nicht innerhalb von 10 Sekunden anspringt, 30 Sekunden warten, ehe nochmals versucht wird, den Motor zu starten. A B C ANMERKUNG: Wenn der Starterschalter in der Startposition losgelassen wird, kehrt automatisch in die Betriebsposition zurück.
7 BETRIEB Ehe der Motor gestartet wird, ist folgendes zu überprüfen bzw. einzustellen: 1. Prüfen, dass die Kupplungen für Zylinder und Bodenwalze ausgekuppelt sind und dass die Bremse angezogen ist. 2. Kraftstoffhahn (E) auf ‘ON’ stellen. Dazu den Heben senkrecht nach unten drehen. 3. Chokehebel (A) bei Kaltstart nach rechts schieben. ANMERKUNG: Den Choke NICHT verwenden, wenn der Motor noch warm ist. 4. Der Starterschalter muss in der ersten Position stehen.

8 WARTUNG UND SCHMIERUNG 8.2.5 GETRIEBE Ölstand prüfen (a) Die Schrauben an beiden Seiten der Abdeckung lösen und die Abdeckung über Getriebe und Kupplungswelle abnehmen. (b) Füllstopfen (C) herausnehmen und den Ölstand mit dem geraden Ölmessstab prüfen. (c) Bei Bedarf empfohlenes Öl bis zu dem auf den Ölmessstab angegebenen Niveau nachfüllen. (d) Füllstopfen wieder einsetzen, Abdeckung aufsetzen und mit den Schrauben sichern.

Die Schrauben lösen, mit denen die Halter der vorderen Walze an beiden Seiten der Maschine befestigt sind. 2. Die Walze auf die gewünschte Höhe einstellen um die Schnitthöhe zu erhöhen, die vordere Walze absenken und sie anheben, um die Schnitthöhe zu senken.
9 EINSTELLUNGEN 9.3 SCHNEIDZYLINDER AUF UNTERMESSER EINSTELLEN Wie folgt prüfen, dass der Schneidzylinder gegenüber dem Untermesser korrekt eingestellt ist: Die Maschine nach hinten kippen, ein dünnes Stück Papier zwischen die Kante des Messers und die Spiralmesser halten und den Zylinder von Hand drehen. Handschuhe tragen und die Hände vom Messer fernhalten. Das Papier sollte sauber über die gesamte Länge des Untermessers zerschnitten werden.
9 9.5 EINSTELLUNGEN KETTENSPANNER Automatische Einstellung Die selbstjustierenden Kettenspanner müssen nicht justiert werden. 9.6 BREMSE Wenn eine Justierung erforderlich ist: 1. Sicherungsmutter (A) lockern. 2. Stellschraube (B) nach links drehen. 3. Sicherungsmutter wieder festziehen. Überprüfen, dass nach der Justierung noch etwas Spiel im Hebel vorhanden ist, damit die Bremsschuhe nicht gegen die Bodenwalze reiben, wenn die Bremse gelöst ist.
9 EINSTELLUNGEN 9.7 KUPPLUNGSHEBEL Die Kupplungshebel sind korrekt eingestellt. Wenn eine Justierung notwendig werden sollte, wenden Sie sich bitte an Ihre Servicestelle. 9.8 AUSBAU VON SCHNEIDZYLINDER UND UNTERMESSER 1. Das Kettengehäuse und die Zylinderantriebskette abnehmen. 2. Die Maschine nach hinten kippen, bis sie auf den Griffen sitzt. Die Maschine muss vollständig abgestützt sein, ehe weitergearbeitet wird. 3.
9 EINSTELLUNGEN 9.10 AUSGLEICHSSTANGE (NUR FÜR GESCHOBENE MASCHINEN) Wenn die Maschine ohne den Grasfangkorb verwendet wird, muss die Ausgleichsstange (Abb. 39) unten am Griff abgenommen und an den Armen des Grasfangkorbs angebracht werden. 9.11 SITZ (LENKSITZ) Der Sitz kann vorwärts und rückwärts verstellt werden. (a) Die Sicherungsschrauben unter der Aufnahme lösen und den Sitz in die gewünschte Position schieben. (b) Schrauben wieder anziehen. 9.
9 EINSTELLUNGEN 9.13 PRÜFEN DER GANGAUSWAHL VORWÄRTS Führen Sie die folgenden Prüfungen durch, um die ordnungsgemäße Funktion der Gangauswahl zu bestimmen. Setzen Sie die Maschine erst ein, wenn alle Fehler behoben sind. 1. Legen Sie mit dem Schalthebel den Vorwärtsgang ein. Prüfen Sie, ob sich der Schalthebel noch frei bewegen lässt und sich nicht in der Führung verhakt. 2. Legen Sie mit dem Schalthebel den Rückwärtsgang ein.
9 EINSTELLUNGEN 8. Ändern Sie die Länge des Schalthebels, indem Sie das Gabelgelenk drehen, bis die Bohrungen im Gabelgelenk und die Bohrung im Umlenkhebel ausgerichtet sind. 9. Setzen Sie den Sicherungsstift wieder ein und wiederholen Sie die in Abschnitt 9.13 beschriebenen Prüfungen. 10. Falls alle Prüfungen bestanden sind, verlängern Sie den Schalthebel, indem Sie das Gabelgelenk eine halbe Drehung herausdrehen und den Sicherungsstift wieder einsetzen. 11.
10 ZUBEHÖR 10.1 ANBAUSITZ (GESCHOBENE MASCHINE) LBMA029 - ANbausitz auf Eisenrollen. Wenn gewünscht kann ein Anbausitz mit verstellbarer Zugstangenlänge mittels einer Einstiftkupplung an der Maschine angebracht werden. Eine EU-Einbaubescheinigung liegt diesem Handbuch bei. 10.2 LENKSITZ LMAC253 - Bausatz - Mastiff-Lenksitz. Serien-Nr. FP & FN. An der Maschine kann ein Lenksitz angebracht werden, indem Rahmen und Handgriffe ausgebaut werden und der gelieferte Rahmen an ihrer Stelle angebracht wird.
11 FEHLERSUCHE 11.1 FEHLERSUCHE - ALLGEMEINES FEHLER ABHILFE Unterschiedliche Höhe des gemähten Rasens über die Breite eines Schnitts Die vorderen Walzen stehen nicht gerade zum Untermesser. Die notwendige Einstellung entsprechend den Anweisungen in Abschnitt 9.1 vornehmen. Gras wird ungleichmäßig auf wellige oder büschelige Weise gemäht. Fluchtung, wenn die Ausrichtung des Schneidzylinders nicht mehr korrekt ist, höchstwahrscheinlich durch Auffahren auf ein Hindernis.
