Overview
This Technical Bulletin describes a termination
technique to be utilized with the OnQ EZ-RJ45 tool,
part number 364555-01, to terminate a CAT5e cable
with an EZ-RJ45 plug, part number 364554-01. This
technique will result in better trimming of the
conductors for a better fit in an RJ-45 jack.
As the tool’s blade, used to cut off the excess wire as
part of the crimping operation, becomes dull from
use, it tends to flex around the wire and makes an
angular cut, rather than a straight cut (see diagrams
at right). This leaves excess conductor sticking out,
and may cause the plug not to seat properly in an RJ-
45 jack.
Solution
If this situation is starting to occur with your EZ-RJ45
tool, there is one temporary and one more permanent
solution. Until you are able to order and receive
replacement blades (the more permanent solution),
you may enhance the cutting performance of the tool
by simply bending the leads, that stick out of the plug,
up (toward the blade) at a 45-degree angle. This
allows the blade to dig in to the conductor resulting in
a straighter cut (see diagrams at right).
Not all RJ-45 jacks are designed the same, and as a
result, you may still have to exert extra pressure to
get the plug to snap into some jacks.
The OnQ part number for EZ-RJ45 replacement
blade is 364646-01. Two replacement blades and a
Phillips screw that is used to retain the blade in the
EZ-RJ45 tool are provided.
