WHAT IS MOLD?
Mold and mildew are types of fungi. Mold is found both outdoors
and indoors and can grow almost anywhere where there is water,
high humidity, or
damp conditions.
Mold reproduces by
means of
tiny spores; the spores are invisible to the naked eye and float
through outdoor and indoor air. There are approximately 10,000
mold spores on the head of a pin.
Mold may begin growing indoors when mold spores land on
surfaces that are wet. Mold
spores can be spread by
vacuuming,
walking on carpets or sitting on couches, for example. When
checking for mold, look for signs of water damage,
wet spots,
staining,
dampness or other evidence of water leaks or damage that
may be a precursor to mold growth.
WHY IS MOLD A CONCERN?
Mold produces mildew, musty odors, ugly stains and unpleasant
odors. It grows on many surfaces and can literally destroy your home
both inside and outside. Over time, it can lead to an unsafe living
environment. Mold produces allergens which can cause allergic
reactions and asthma attacks. It can also irritate the eyes, skin,
nose, throat and lungs even among those with
no allergies.
DO I HAVE A MOLD PROBLEM?
Use the Mold Armor Test Kit to test for mold in your home or office.

TO PREPARE THE PETRI DISH:
Remove the petri dish from the plastic bag and lay it on a level surface before removing lid. Remove the lid of the petri dish and pour the
mold growth medium into petri dish bottom. Replace the lid and swirl gently until the bottom is completely covered. Allow to gel for one
hour on a level surface before removing lid.
Note: You may only use one testing method per petri dish.
METHOD 1: INDOOR AIR QUALITY TEST
Place the prepared petri dish on a level surface in the location where you want to test for mold. Remove the lid of the petri dish and leave it
open to the environment for 1 hour. After one hour replace the lid and tape the lid together. Incubate the covered dish for at least 48 hours.
If there is no mold growth present within 48 hours, re-check the dish at 72 hours and 96 hours to be sure that no slow growing molds were
overlooked. If mold growth is present within the incubation period of 48 to 96 hours, you may send the taped petri dish to our lab for genus
level mold identification of the mold growth observed. If no mold growth is present after 96 hours then no mold was detected.
METHOD 2: HVAC AIR SAMPLING
(TAPE IS REQUIRED)
Mold can also come from your heating and air conditioning unit. To test, locate the air exhaust vent that is furthest away from the furnace.
After preparing the petri dish, remove the lid and tape the open dish against the open-air vent. Close all of the remaining air vents that are on
the system. Turn the system fan on high for a 10-minute period, allowing forced air to hit the inside surface of the petri dish. After 10 minutes
remove the petri dish, replace the lid and tape the lid together. Incubate the covered dish for at least 48 hours. If there is no mold growth
present within 48 hours, re-check the dish at 72 hours and 96 hours to be sure that no slow growing molds were overlooked. If mold growth
is present within the incubation period of 48 to 96 hours, you may send the petri dish to our lab for genus level mold identification of the
mold growth observed. If no mold growth is present after 96 hours then no mold was detected.
METHOD 3: WHEN MOLD GROWTH IS VISIBLE
Locate the visual mold growth. Take the sterile swab and wipe the tip across the visual mold growth. Be sure the mold adheres to the swab tip.
Very gently wipe the mold sample from the tip of the swab across the top surface of the medium (Potato Dextrose) on the petri dish allowing the
mold to adhere. Replace the lid. Be sure to send both the swab and the taped petri dish in the plastic bag to our lab for analysis.
OPTIONAL LAB ANALYSIS
Available for $40
Register your mold test kit online at www.moldarmor.com/home/products/mold-armor-test-kit and purchase lab analysis for $40. Lab
results available within 10 days of receipt.
Note: While Mold Armor Mold Test Kit can be an important part of protecting your family against mold,
many factors contribute to any test’s effectiveness. The Mold Test Kit can only detect airborne or surface
mold spores (depending on test method) that are present in the area tested at the time of testing. If
symptoms of mold exposure persist, a certified mold specialist should be consulted.

MOLD TEST KIT

Mold Armor Do-It-Yourself Mold Test Kit can show whether there is mold growth occurring indoors or outdoors within
48 to 96 hours. You will need one mold test kit for each area of concern. An optional lab analysis is available for $40
to identify the genus level of molds growing in the petri dish. (To register your test kit and purchase the $40 optional
lab analysis, visit www.moldarmor.com/home/products/mold-armor-test-kit). The Mold Test Kit comes with a petri
dish, a sterile swab and a bottle of mold growth medium (Potato Dextrose).
To determine whether you have a mold problem, a minimum of 2 sample kits are needed to compare indoor to outdoor
air quality. The first sample should be taken indoors where air quality is a concern and the second sample should be
taken outdoors. If the amount of mold growing in the indoor sample is much greater than the outdoor sample, you
may have a mold problem.
