Place the rst layer of block around the base of the tree, adjusting the ring as needed until
it is complete. Mark both the interior and exterior outlines of the ring as a guide. Remove
the blocks and dig a trench 3- 4” deep and 10” wide for the base of the ring. Compact
and level the soil with a tamper. Add 2” of gravel in the trench; tamper and level gravel.
Reposition the rst layer of block in the center of the trench, adding gravel to level the
blocks as needed. Blocks should sit 1- 2” below grade to prevent shifting. Fill in any
gaps with gravel and tamp to compress. Position the remaining layers, staggering the joints,
applying a
1/4- 3/8 bead of construction adhesive between each layer. Refer to the
construction adhesive’s application instructions for proper use.
A thin layer of dirt for planting may be added inside the ring without covering the base of
the trunk. If using mulch, apply a 2” to 3” layer to help retain moisture and block weed
growth. Additional vegetation will compete for moisture and nutrients, water accordingly.
