Properadherenceofanewwalldecalisinfluencedbymorefactorsthanonecanimagineorconsideratfirstandtheyareallequally

important.Makesuretoreadthroughtheinformationbelow*before*tryingtoapplyyourwalldecalasitmayavoidproblems

duringorafterapplication.

The

firstandmostimportantpointtounderstandisthathighqualityindoorsdecorativevinyl,ordesigner’svinylastheyarecalled,

purposefullyhavelowadherencelevelsandaremeanttobeappliedonfullyflat,smooth,cleananddrysurfaces.Thelowtack

Needlesstosay,thelowtackcharacteristicofindoorsvinylcan

createafewchallengesduringapplicationorevenafteritis

successfullyapplied,bypeelingoffofthewallonitsownweight.Literally,therearemorefactorstovinyladherencethanmeetsthe

eye.Let’sgothroughthecommonones:

‐WashablePaints:Tryingtoapplylowtackvinyltoawallpaintedwith“washable”or“non‐sticky”paint,mostlybutnotlimited

toLatexbasedtypes,isgenerallythesourceofmanyadhesionproblems.Thesetypesofpaintsaredesignedtorepelanythingfrom

stickingtothemthusmakingtheapplicationof

walldecalsconsiderablymorechallenging.Suchpaintsmighteasilyacceptother

typesofdecalsmanufacturedwithhighamountsofadhesivebutcomeremovaltime,theywillmostlikelydamagethepaintjob.

Remember,highqualityindoorsislowtackbydesign.Applyingawalldecaltoaperfectlysmoothandclean

walljusttoseeingit

fallingoffafewhourslaterisindicativeofawashablepaint.

‐Dust:Oneofthemostoverlookedstepsforpropervinylapplicationleadingtolatefailuresistryingtoapplythemonadusty,not

properlycleananddrywall.Thetypeofdustwearereferringtoisnotnecessarilyvisibleasevenmicroscopicdustentrapped

betweenthewallandthe

vinylmightbeenoughtocausethedecaltofalloffthewallprematurely.Makesuretonotonlythoroughly

cleanthewallbutalsoletitdryoutproperlybeforeapplyingyourwalldecal.Ifnecessary,thecarefuluseoftackclothcouldbe

helpfulduringthecleaningprocess.

‐SurfaceFlatness:Tryingtoapplyourwalldecalsonporoussurfacesisalsooutofspec,eventhoughitcanbedoneunder

moderatecircumstances.Textureorroughwallsarenaturalenemiesoflowtackvinylastheywillincreasethepotentialforair

bubbleswhileconsiderablydecreasingadherencelevels.Havingsaid

that,ourwalldecalshavebeensuccessfullyappliedtoslightly

texturedwallssuchassandstoneororangepeelbutbewareofanypointyprotuberanceastheymightperforatethevinyl.Since

thereisnomeasurementastowhata"slightlytexturedwall"is,aswithanyotherout‐of‐specapplication,

youwouldhavetouse

commonsensewhendealingwithanytypeoftextureandproceedatyourowndiscretionandresponsibility.

‐VinylShapeandColor:Adherenceperformanceisinfluencednotonlybytheareaandsubsequentweightofthevinylbutby

theshapeofthecut,asthatwilldetermineweightdistributionandtensionlevelsthroughoutthepiece.Thissimplefactofphysicsis

enhancedwhenalowtackvinylisappliedout‐of‐

spec,beitonatexturedwalloronwashablepaint.Forinstance,a20x20"piece

mightadhereperfectlytoanout‐of‐specwallbuttheexactsameareainadifferentshapesuchas5x80"mightnotdosowell.To

complicatemattersevenfurther,a5x80"piecemight

stickperfectlywhenappliedhorizontallybutmayfallifappliedvertically,

again,duetoweightdistributionandtensionlevels.Also,keepinmindthatinordertoachieveallthedifferentcolorsavailable,the

vinylismanufacturedwithdifferentsubstratesleadingtoaslightyetnoticeablevariationonhowconformable

eachcoloris.

Regardlessofcolor,allOracalSeries631ExhibitionCalvinylreceivetheexactsameamountofadhesivepersquareinch,butwhen

applyingthewalldecaltoanout‐of‐specwall,differentcolorsanddifferentcutshapeswillmostlikelyperformdifferentlyleading

thecustomertoerroneously

believethatoneparticularcolormightbedefective.

‐DefectiveVinyl:Asmentionedabove,adhesiveisuniformlyappliedtothevinylbyOracalbutmoreimportantly,the
