ElectroMagneticFields(EMF)Projectsinceitsinceptionin1996.Aninfluentialresultof
thisworkhasbeenthedevelopmentofadetailedagendaofresearchneedsthathas
driventheestablishmentofnewresearchprogramsaroundtheworld.Theprojecthas
alsohelpeddevelopaseriesofpublicinformationdocumentsonEMFissues.
TheFDAandtheCellularTelecommunications&InternetAssociation(CTIA)havea
formalCooperativeResearchAndDevelopmentAgreement(CRADA)todoresearchon
wirelessdevicesafety.TheFDAprovidesthescientificoversight,obtaininginputfrom
expertsingovernment,industry,andacademicorganizations.CTIA-fundedresearchis
conductedthroughcontractswithindependentinvestigators.Theinitialresearchwill
includebothlaboratorystudiesandstudiesofwirelessdeviceusers.TheCRADAwill
alsoincludeabroadassessmentofadditionalresearchneedsinthecontextofthe
latestresearchdevelopmentsaroundtheworld.

AlltabletssoldintheUnitedStatesmustcomplywithFederalCommunications
Commission(FCC)guidelinesthatlimitRadioFrequency(RF)energyexposures.The
FCCestablishedtheseguidelinesinconsultationwiththeFDAandtheotherfederal
healthandsafetyagencies.TheFCClimitforRFexposurefromwirelessdevicesis
setataSpecificAbsorptionRate(SAR)of1.6wattsperkilogram(1.6W/kg).TheFCC
limitisconsistentwiththesafetystandardsdevelopedbytheInstituteofElectricaland
ElectronicEngineering(IEEE)andtheNationalCouncilonRadiationProtectionand
Measurement.Theexposurelimittakesintoconsiderationthebody’sabilitytoremove
heatfromthetissuesthatabsorbenergyfromthetabletandissetwellbelowlevels
knowntohaveeffects.ManufacturersoftabletsmustreporttheRFexposurelevelfor
