UsethefollowingproceduresasaguideinidentifyingandcorrectingproblemswiththeThinkPadNotebook.

Note:ThediagnostictestsareintendedtotestonlyThinkPadproducts.Theuseofnon-ThinkPadproducts,

prototypecards,ormodiedoptionscanleadtofalseindicationsoferrorsandinvalidsystemresponses.

1.Identifythefailingsymptomsinasmuchdetailaspossible.

2.Verifythesymptoms.Trytore-createthefailurebyrunningthediagnostictestorbyrepeatingthe

operation.

DiagnosticsusingPC-DoctorforDOS

TheThinkPadNotebookhasatestprogramcalledPC-DoctorforDOS(hereaftercalledPC-Doctor.)Youcan

detecterrorsbyrunningthediagnosticstestincludedinPC-Doctor.

Note:

PC-DoctorforDOSisavailableatthefollowingWebsite:http://www.lenovo.com/support

TocreatethePC-DoctordiagnosticCD,followtheinstructionsontheWebsite.

Forsomepossiblecongurationsofthecomputer,PC-Doctormightnotruncorrectly.Toavoidthisproblem,

youneedtoinitializethecomputersetupbyuseoftheBIOSSetupUtilitybeforeyourunPC-Doctor.

ToenterBIOSSetupUtility,doasfollows:

1.Turnonthecomputer.

2.WhentheThinkPadlogocomesup,immediatelypressF1toentertheBIOSSetupUtility.

Note:Ifasupervisorpasswordhasbeensetbythecustomer,BIOSSetupUtilitymenuappearsafterthe

passwordisentered.YoucanstarttheutilitybypressingEnterinsteadofenteringthesupervisorpassword;

however,youcannotchangetheparametersthatareprotectedbythesupervisorpassword.

OntheBIOSSetupUtilityscreen,pressF9,Enter,F10,andthenEnter.

Note:Whenyouinitializethecomputerconguration,somedevicesaredisabled,suchastheserialport.If

youtestoneofthesedevices,youwillneedtoenableitbyusingCongurationutilityforDOS.Theutilityis

availableonthefollowingWebsite:http://www.lenovo.com/support

PC-Doctorcannotbeusedtotestadevicethatisinthedockingstation,evenifthecomputersupportsthe

dockingstation.TotestaUSBdevice,connectittotheUSBconnectorofthecomputer.

Testingthecomputer

Inthisproduct,youneedanexternalopticaldrivetousethePC-DoctordiagnosticCDtotestthehardware

features.

Note:ThePC-DoctordiagnosticCDdoesnotsupportanyexternalopticaldrivesconnectedthroughUSB

devicesoranyothers.

Torunthetest,doasfollows:

1.Turnoffthecomputer.

2.AttachanexternalopticaldrivethroughtheUSBconnectortothecomputer.

3.Settheexternalopticaldriveasastartupdevice.

4.Turnoffthecomputer.

5.Turnonthecomputer.Ifthecomputercannotbepoweredon,goto“Powersystemcheckout”on

page39,andcheckthepowersources.
