Manual Soldering Recommendations
Following is the recommendation for manual
soldering with a soldering iron.
The soldering iron tip temperature should
besetat350°C(+10°Cmaximum),withthe
solderingdurationnottoexceedmorethan
3 seconds.

Soldering Process
The implementation of the RoHS directive has resulted in the selection of SnAuCu (SAC) alloys or SnCu alloys as primary
soldermaterial.Thishasincreasedtheliquidustemperaturefrom183°CforSnPbeutecticalloysto217–221°Cforthenew
alloys.Asaresult,theheatstresstothecomponents,eveninwavesoldering,hasincreasedconsiderablyduetohigherpre-
heat and wave temperatures. Polypropylene capacitors are especially sensitive to heat (the melting point of polypropylene
is160–170°C).Wavesolderingcanbedestructive,especiallyformechanicallysmallpolypropylenecapacitors(withlead
spacingof5–15mm).Greatcaremustbetakenduringsoldering.TherecommendedsolderprolesfromKEMETshouldbe
used.ConsultKEMETwithanyquestions.Ingeneral,thewavesolderingcurvefromIECPublication61760-1Edition2serves
as a solid guideline for successful soldering. See Figure 1.
Reowsolderingisnotrecommendedforthrough-holelmcapacitors.Exposingcapacitorstoasolderingproleinexcess
oftheabove-recommendedlimitsmayresulttodegradationoforpermanentdamagetothecapacitors.
Do not place the polypropylene capacitor through an adhesive curing oven to cure resin for surface mount components.
Insertthrough-holepartsaftercuringsurfacemountparts.ConsultKEMETtodiscusstheactualtemperatureprolein
theoven,ifthrough-holecomponentsmustpassthroughtheadhesivecuringprocess.Amaximumtwosolderingcycles
isrecommended.Allowtimeforthecapacitorsurfacetemperaturetoreturntonormaltemperaturebeforeperformingthe
second soldering cycle.
