Installation Guide

BACKWATER VALVES
Jones Stephens' Backwater Valves are designed to be installed horizontal in the building
drainage system. The valve is to be installed with the access opening at the top. The
valve shall be installed so that the arrows on the side are pointing in the direction of the
ow. When connecting the valve and associated piping, ensure that no solvent cement
used in the joint enters the body of the valve.
All backwater valve sockets are of Schedule 40 DWV conguration. If the valve is to be
buried in the ground or installed under a concrete oor, an access sleeve with lid is to be
installed over the opening in the top of the valve permitting access to the valve for
periodic inspection.
If the sleeve is solvent cemented to the valve,
care must be taken to ensure that the operation
of the backwater valve lid is not aected.
PRIOR TO TESTING THE SYSTEM: REMOVE THE
BACKWATER VALVE LID, CHECK THE VALVE
FLAPPER FOR FREEDOM OF MOVEMENT AND
REPLACE AND TIGHTEN LID.
NOTE: A BACKWATER VALVE IS NOT RECOM-
MENDED FOR INSTALLATION IN BRANCH LINES
SERVING KITCHEN INSTALLATIONS.
Jones Stephens Backwater Valves are available in
both PVC and ABS. Extension kits (with sleeve and
lid) are available for 1-1/2", 2", 3", 4” and 6"
backwater valves.
