• A trusted agency that issues certificates
• Validates the identity of a person requesting a certificate
• The CA signs the certificate request with their own CA
certificate, thus creating a certificate for the requestor
• CA certificate may be self-signed (root-level), or signed
by a higher CA
• You can be your own CA!
