HP StoreOnce 6500 Backup Installation Planning and Preparation Guide

Network requirements
Network requirements must be defined and sufficient IP addresses must be available. There is a
brief overview of networking concepts before the checklist but please read Connecting to your
network (page 19) before completing the details below.
Overview of networking concepts
You need to define the networking hierarchy for the HP service specialist in terms of portsets and
subnets.
1. Portsets define the physical 1GbE and/or 10GbE ports on the StoreOnce Backup system that
you intend to connect to your network. A portset also defines the network bonding mode (1,
4 or 6) for the ports, the type of data that they will carry (Management and/or Data), and
whether they are VLAN enabled. (VLAN tagging enables more subnets to be accessed without
extra NIC host bus adapters.)
At least one portset must be configured to support connection to the StoreOnce Management
CLI and GUI. Further portsets may be defined, according to the number and type of physical
ports still available. The portset applies to all nodes in the cluster and ports must always be
bonded.
If VLAN enabled a portset cannot be used for Management and it cannot use bonding mode
6.
2. Subnets are attached to each portset that is configured. There must be one, and only one,
Management subnet (which may be configured to also carry Data) and it cannot be on a
portset that is VLAN enabled. Up to two further Data subnets may be configured, if remaining
portsets are not VLAN enabled. If a portset is VLAN enabled it may be configured with multiple
VLAN subnets (maximum is 128 for the whole system).
The StoreOnce Backup system does not support DHCP and static IP addresses are required
for all subnets.

Checklist
IMPORTANT: It is essential that the information in the following checklist is completed and given
to HP Support Services prior to the install. The installation cannot proceed unless all networking
parameters are known and any network infrastructure configuration is in place.
Your HP service specialist will provide you with a record of the Virtual IP addresses after the network
configuration has been completed. These are the addresses that you need to connect to the
StoreOnce Management Console (from the GUI or CLI) and to configure backup and replication
targets.
Confirm that network cabling meets requirements.
1 GbE network(s): verify that the cabling is CAT5ES or CAT6 copper with RJ45
connectors?...............
1.
10GbE network: what cabling is used for the 10GbE connections (optical or copper)?..............
Do you wish to configure all eight potential nodes in the cluster at installation
(recommended)?...................
If not, how many are to be configured?..............................
2.
Do you wish to configure DNS servers?
If yes, please provide the IP addresses (up to 3)
3.
