Working with the Character Cell
In each font, the basis for each character or space is the character
cell. Think of the character cell as a rectangular area around a
character that includes blank areas above and to the right of the
character. Refer to the Figure 23-5.

Term Description
Baseline The imaginary line on which a line of text rests. A
character’s descender (such as the bottom of a
lowercase “g”) extends below the baseline.
Linefeed The distance from the baseline of a line of text to
the baseline of the next character line above or
below. For most fonts, the linefeed is about 1.2
times the point size (1.33 times the point size for
Stick fonts).
Point Size Traditional character measure roughly equivalent to
the height of a capital letter M plus the depth of a
descender.
