3.7.0 HP StorageWorks HP Scalable NAS File Serving Software release notes for Linux (AG513-96006, October 2009)

FS Option for Linux
DescriptionDefect
Running NFS client and its Virtual NFS Service on the same node can cause problems
When an NFS client is running on a node that is also serving as the primary for the Virtual
NFS Service used by that client, the client may quietly lose its locks when a failover occurs.
To avoid this situation, do not run NFS clients on nodes that are configured as the Virtual
NFS Service used by the clients.

Clients may experience delays
NFS client implementations based on Linux 2.4, Linux 2.6.5, Linux 2.6.9, and potentially
other operating systems and releases, may incur the delay of an RPC timeout (on the order
of 30 seconds) when granted a previously blocked lock. This problem is caused by a client-side
bug that causes the server's message granting the lock to be rejected due to authentication
failure. The HP Scalable NAS server sends the grant message promptly and is not responsible
for the potential 30-second delay.
8799
Linux NFS client may pause uninterruptedly
NFS client applications that use blocking file locks (via fcntl()) will sometimes pause
uninterruptedly for 30 seconds and then (if they are not killed in the meantime) resume running
normally. This problem is caused by a bug in the Linux NFS client.
Workaround. Contact HP Support for a version of the SLES9 and RHEL4 NFS clients with this
problem fixed. The client is licensed under the GPL.

Clients may fail a blocked lock request
NFS client implementations based on Linux 2.4 and potentially other operating systems and
releases may fail a blocked lock request when the server recovers after a failover. The lock
failure is exposed by the NFS client to applications. A more robust client implementation
would reissue the pending lock request after reclaiming any previously granted locks. This
issue is fixed in the RHEL5 and SLES10 NFS clients.

--probeseverity value must be lower case
The value of the --probeseverity option to the exportgroup command must be specified
in lower-case letters. The command does not report an error if upper-case letters are typed;
however, the option is set to the default value.

File locks cannot be acquired when HP Scalable NAS is not running
When HP Scalable NAS is installed, the network status monitor (NSM) support is provided
by /opt/hpcfs/sbin/vstatd, which replaces the traditional /usr/sbin/rpc.statd.
vstatd is cluster-aware and requires membership in an active cluster to run. File locks cannot
be acquired over NFS while NSM support is unavailable; lock requests will be rejected with
ENOLCK.

Client times out before it can mount exported filesystems
If the client's mount command times out consistently (for example, for every retry of a
backgrounded mount), one possible cause is that the client IP address cannot be resolved to
names at the server. The server mountd may take longer attempting to translate the client
address than the client mount is prepared to wait.
To resolve this problem, ensure that the server can translate the client's IP addresses to names.
This can be done in any of several ways: by adding entries to the server's /etc/hosts file,
by deploying a DNS in-addr.arpa zone that covers the client addresses, or by avoiding the
use of nonroutable private addresses (for example, do not use network 192.168/16 without
private DNS in-addr support).
