ASSEMBLY If your unit has been preassembled, check each step to make sure the unit has been properly assembled. FRONT HANDLE FRONT HANDLE See Figure 2. n Remove the front handle, bolt, and wing nut from the Owner’s Kit. n Install the front handle onto the top side of the drive shaft housing and move it to a comfortable position. n Place the bolt through the front handle as shown, then install the wing nut. n Tighten wing nut securely.
ASSEMBLY CURVED SHAFT GRASS DEFLECTOR WITH EDGER GUIDE - TRIM ‘N EDGE ONLY See Figures 5 - 6. n Remove the wing nut, flat washer, lock washer, and bolt from the Owner’s Kit. n Place the curved shaft grass deflector over the shaft and bracket. n Slide the assembled edger guide over the tabs on the grass deflector and bracket. n Place the bolt through the slots in the tabs on the grass deflector and trimmer. NOTE: Ensure the slots are aligned before installing the bolt.
OPERATION FUELING AND REFUELING THE TRIMMER OPERATING THE TRIMMER FUEL MIXTURE This product is powered by a 2-cycle engine and requires premixing gasoline and 2-cycle oil. Pre-mix unleaded gasoline and 2-cycle engine oil in a clean 1 gallon container approved for gasoline. Recommended fuel: This engine is certified to operate on unleaded gasoline intended for automotive use. Mix Homelite Premium Exact Mix oil with gasoline according to the instructions on the package.
OPERATION ADVANCING THE STRING String advance is controlled by tapping string head on grass while running engine at full throttle. 1. Run engine at full throttle. 2. Tap string head on ground to advance string. String advances each time the head is tapped. 3. Several taps may be required until string strikes the cut off blade. 4. Resume trimming. NOTE: If the string is worn too short you may not be able to advance the string by tapping it on the ground.
OPERATION EDGER GUIDE OPERATION - TRIM ‘N EDGE ONLY See Figures 10 -11. n Loosen the wing nut and slide the edger guide to adjust it to the desired trimming length then retighten the wing nut securely. Refer to “Edger Guide Assembly” earlier in this manual for additional information. n The edger guide allows the trimmer to be used as an edger for cutting along sidewalks, driveways, flower beds, etc. The edger guide is convenient to use and supports the trimmer as it is being used as an edger.
OPERATION STARTING AND STOPPING STARTING INSTRUCTION LABEL See Figure 12 - 13. TO START A COLD ENGINE: DO NOT squeeze the throttle trigger until the engine starts and runs. n Lay the trimmer on a flat, bare surface. n PRIME - Press the primer bulb 7 times. n SET the start lever to the START position. n PULL the rope until the engine starts. n Allow the engine to run for 15 seconds. n Squeeze the throttle trigger. NOTE: Squeezing the throttle trigger releases the start lever to the RUN position.
MAINTENANCE WARNING: Use only original manufacturer's replacement parts, accessories and attachments. Failure to do so can cause poor performance, possible injury and may void your warranty. You can often make adjustments and repairs described here. For other repairs, have the trimmer serviced by an authorized service dealer. SPOOL REPLACEMENT NEW PREWOUND SPOOL See Figures 14 - 15. MAINTENANCE STRING REPLACEMENT See Figures 16 - 19. n Stop the engine, disconnect the spark plug wire. Hold the string head and unscrew the spool retainer. To remove the spool retainer: Turn the spool retainer counterclockwise for Trimlite and Trim n’ Edge. Turn the spool retainer clockwise for Easy Reach. n Remove the spool from the string head. NOTE: Keep the spring attached to the spool. Remove any old string remaining on the spool. n Cut two pieces of string, each being approximately 9 ft. (2.7 m) long.
MAINTENANCE REPLACING AND CLEANING AIR FILTER AIR FILTER COVER See Figures 20 - 21. For proper performance and long life, keep air filter clean. n Remove the air filter cover by turning the knob counterclockwise while gently pulling on the cover. n Remove the air filter, clean it in warm soapy water. Rinse and let dry completely. For best performance, replace annually. n Install the air filter. Align and install the air filter cover on the air filter base.
TROUBLESHOOTING IF THESE SOLUTIONS DO NOT SOLVE THE PROBLEM CONTACT YOUR AUTHORIZED SERVICE DEALER. PROBLEM Engine will not start: POSSIBLE CAUSE SOLUTION 1. Check spark. Remove spark plug. Reattach the spark plug cap and lay spark plug on metal cylinder. Pull the rope and watch for spark at spark plug tip. If there is no spark, repeat test with a new spark plug. 2. Push primer bulb until bulb is full of fuel. If bulb does not fill, primary fuel delivery system is blocked. Contact a service dealer.
TROUBLESHOOTING IF THESE SOLUTIONS DO NOT SOLVE THE PROBLEM CONTACT YOUR AUTHORIZED SERVICE DEALER. PROBLEM POSSIBLE CAUSE SOLUTION Spool retainer hard to turn: 1. Screw threads are dirty or damaged. 1. Clean threads and lubricate with grease - if no improvement, replace the spool retainer. Grass wraps around driveshaft housing and string head: 1. Cutting tall grass at ground level. 1. Cut tall grass from the top down to prevent wrapping. 2. Operate trimmer at full throttle. 2.
