Setup Guide

Migrate the user VMs to other available hosts.
Shut down the user VMs.
NOTE: Any VMs that are migrated as a part of the upgrade process are not automatically migrated back to their original
location after the upgrade is complete.
Minimizing ESXi host failover occurrences
When ESXi host updates are available for a PowerStore X model appliance, each ESXi host in the appliance must be placed into
maintenance mode during the update process.
When the ESXi host that is running the PowerStore hardware enters maintenance mode, the user VMs migrate either to the
ESXi host on the peer node of the appliance or to other available ESXi hosts in the same ESXi host cluster. Management
services for the cluster, including access to the PowerStore Manager and VASA provider services, are temporarily unavailable
until the failover process between nodes is complete.
To minimize disruptions caused by failover, start the update on the ESXi host on the peer node of the appliance.
Perform the following steps to identify the peer node of the appliance:
1. In PowerStore Manager, select Hardware, then click the name of the appliance and click the Hardware tab.
2. Click the Internal View tab. The node without the text (primary) is the peer node of the appliance.
3. Record the node letter of peer node, which is A or B.
4. From the Compute > vCenter Server Connection page, start the vSphere Web Client by clicking Launch vSphere.
5. Log in to the associated vCenter Server.
6. Find the VM named PSTX-
<serial_number>
-
<node_letter>
. Where node_letter is the node letter of the peer node that was
recorded in step 3.
7. On the Summary tab of the VM, record the Host IP address. This address is the IP address of the ESXi host on the peer
node of the appliance.
8. During the update, place the ESXi host on the peer node of the appliance into maintenance mode first.
Install the PowerStore X model preupgrade package
Use PowerStore Manager to install the preupgrade package.
Prerequisites
If the PowerStore Release Notes do not indicate that a preupgrade package must be installed, go to Upgrade the PowerStore X
model firmware on page 5.
If the PowerStore Release Notes indicate that a preupgrade package must be installed, perform the following steps to install the
PowerStore X model preupgrade package:
Steps
1. Open PowerStore Manager.
2. Select the Settings icon, and then select Upgrades in the Cluster section.
3. Select the preupgrade package in the Software packages table, and click Upgrade.
The preupgrade package is installed on both nodes of the appliance.
Next steps
If a PowerStore X model node firmware upgrade is available or required, go to Upgrade the PowerStore X model firmware on
page 5.
If a PowerStore X model node firmware upgrade is not available, go to Update the PowerStore internal ESXi hosts on page 5.
NOTE:
The nodes of the PowerStore X model appliance do not reboot after a preupgrade package is installed. The nodes
of the appliances are rebooted when ESXi updates are installed on the hosts. If ESXi updates are not installed, you must
reboot the nodes of the appliances during the PowerStore OS upgrade, as described in Upgrade the PowerStore OS on
page 6.
