Product features The Alienware AW3418DW/AW3418HW monitor has an active matrix, ThinFilm Transistor (TFT), Liquid Crystal Display (LCD) and LED backlight. LCD monitor quality and pixel policy During the LCD Monitor manufacturing process, it is not uncommon for one or more pixels to become fixed in an unchanging state which are hard to see and do not affect the display quality or usability. Maintenance guidelines Cleaning your monitor CAUTION: Read and follow the Safety instructions before cleaning the monitor.
Setting up the monitor Attaching the stand NOTE: The stand is not installed at the factory when shipped. NOTE: The following instructions are applicable only for attaching the stand that was shipped with your monitor. If you are attaching a stand that you purchased from any other source, follow the set up instructions that were included with the stand. CAUTION: The steps are important to protect your curved screen. Do follow the instructions below to finish up the installation.
3. Gently lift up the monitor by holding it firmly on both sides. 4. Place the monitor on the foam and lift the cover from the monitor.
5. Place the monitor on the foam with the screen facing down. 6. Attach the stand riser till it snaps into place.
7. Connect the necessary cables to the monitor, as shown in the illustration, and route the cables through the cable-management slot on the stand riser. a. Power cable b. USB downstream cables (optional, cable not included) NOTE: Route each cable neatly so that the cables will be organized after the I/O cover is attached.
10. Slide the I/O cover until it snaps into place. NOTE: Ensure that the cables are free from obstruction and pass through the I/O cover and cable-management slot on the stand riser. Connecting the computer WARNING: Before you begin any of the procedures in this section, follow the Safety instructions. NOTE: Do not connect all cables to the computer at the same time. To connect your monitor to the computer: 1.
4. Plug the power cables for your computer and monitor into a nearby outlet. 5. Turn On the monitor and the computer. If your monitor displays an image, installation is complete. If it does not display an image, see Universal Serial Bus (USB) specific problems. NOTE: The graphics are used for the purpose of illustration only. Appearance of the computer may vary.
5. Disconnect the cables from the monitor and slide the cables through the cable-management slot on the stand riser. 6. Press and hold the stand release button. 7. Lift the stand riser up and away from the monitor.
VESA wall mounting (optional) (Screw dimension: M4 x 10 mm). Refer to the instructions that come with the VESA-compatible wall mounting kit. 1. Place the monitor panel on a soft cloth or cushion on a stable flat surface. 2. Remove the monitor stand. (See Removing the monitor stand.) 3. Use a Phillips crosshead screwdriver to remove the four screws securing the plastic cover. 4. Attach the mounting bracket from the wall mounting kit to the monitor. 5. Mount the monitor on the wall.
Operating the monitor Power on the monitor Press the Power button to turn on the monitor. Using the front-panel controls Use the control buttons on the front of the monitor to adjust settings. The following table describes the front-panel buttons: Front-panel button Description Use this button to choose from a list of preset color modes. 1 Shortcut key/ Preset Modes Use this button to launch the Overclock Refresh Rate menu.
Use this button to directly access the Brightness/Contrast menu. 4 Shortcut key/ Brightness/ Contrast 5 Menu Use the MENU button to launch the On-Screen Display (OSD). See Accessing the menu system. Use this button to exit the OSD main menu. 6 Exit Front-panel button Use the buttons on the front of the monitor to adjust the image settings. Front-panel button 1 Up 2 Down 3 Description Use the Up button to adjust (increase ranges) items in the OSD menu.
Using the On-Screen Display (OSD) menu Accessing the menu system NOTE: If you change the settings and then either proceed to another menu or exit the OSD menu, the monitor automatically saves those changes. The changes are also saved if you change the settings and then wait for the OSD menu to disappear. 1. Press the button to launch the OSD menu and display the main menu. 2. Press the and buttons to move between the setting options. As you move from one icon to another, the option name is highlighted.
Icon Menu and submenus Description Game Use this menu to personalize your visual gameplay experience. Preset Modes Allows you to choose from a list of preset color modes. • Standard: Loads the monitor's default color settings. This is the default preset mode. • FPS: Loads color settings ideal for First-Person Shooter games. • RTS: Loads color settings ideal for Real-Time Strategy games. • RPG: Loads color settings ideal for Role-Playing games.
Preset Modes • ComfortView: Decreases the level of blue light emitted from the screen to make viewing more comfortable for your eyes. WARNING: The possible long-term effects of blue light emission from the monitor may cause personal injury such as digital eye strain, eye fatigue and damage to the eyes. Using monitor for extended periods of time may also cause pain in parts of body such as neck, arm, back and shoulder.
Game Enhance The feature offers three available functions to enhance your Mode gameplay experience. • Off Select to disable the functions under Game Enhance Mode. • Timer Allows you to disable or enable the timer at the upper left corner of the display. The timer shows the time elapsed since the game starts. Select an option from the time-interval list to measure your target game rate. • Frame Rate Selecting On allows you to display the current frames per second when playing games.
Overclock Refresh Rate The function increases your displays refresh rate. Use or to adjust the frequency in 5 Hz increments, from 105 to 120 Hz (for AW3418DW) or 150 to 160 Hz (for AW3418HW). After you specify the refresh rate, the following message appears to guide you through the process: NOTE: This function is only available when Overclock is enabled. NOTE: Overclocking may cause screen flickering. To reduce such effects, try to setting a lower refresh rate.
Brightness/ Contrast Brightness Use this menu to activate Brightness/Contrast adjustment. Brightness adjusts the luminance of the backlight. Press the button to increase the brightness and press the button to decrease the brightness (min. 0 / max. 100). Contrast Adjust the Brightness first, and then adjust the Contrast only if further adjustment is necessary. Press the button to increase the contrast and press the button to decrease the contrast (min. 0 / max. 100).
Input Source HDMI DP 42 | Use the Input Source menu to select between the different video signals that may be connected to your monitor. Select the HDMI input when you are using the HDMI connector. Select the DP input when you are using the DisplayPort (DP) connector.
AlienFX Lighting Use this menu to adjust the Alienware logo lighting, Triad lights on the back and stand of the monitor, downlights on the bottom of the monitor, and the power button. Before making any adjustments, select any or all of these 4 zones from the submenus. The illustration below indicates the lighting zones.
All Zones To specify an LED lighting color for the selected area, select On and press the Zone 2: Stand option. Zone 1: Back button to highlight the Custom Color Zone 3: Downlights Zone 4: Power Button Then make a selection from the list of 20 available colors by using the 44 | Operating the monitor and buttons.

Spectrum When you select On, the AlienFX lights of 4 zones glow and change colors in sequence of spectrum: red, orange, yellow, green, blue, indigo, and violet. NOTE: When the function is On, the functions above are deactivated. Reset AlienFX Select this option to restore default lighting settings. Lighting Audio Volume Allows you to set the volume level of headphone output. Use Reset Audio 46 | or to adjust the volume level from 0 to 100. Select this option to restore default audio settings.
Menu Select this option to adjust the settings of the OSD, such as, the languages of the OSD, the amount of time the menu remains on screen, and so on. Language Set the OSD display to one of the eight languages (English, Spanish, French, German, Brazilian Portuguese, Russian, Simplified Chinese, or Japanese). Transparency Select this option to change the menu transparency by pressing the Timer and buttons (min. 0 / max. 100).
Personalize Shortcut Key 1 Allows you to choose a feature from Preset Modes, Shortcut Key 2 Overclock Refresh Rate, Dark Stabilizer, Brightness/ Contrast, Game Enhance Mode, Input Source, or Volume Shortcut Key 3 and set it as a shortcut key. Shortcut Key 4 Restores shortcut keys to factory defaults. Reset Personalization Others Display Info Displays the monitor's current settings. Power Saving The default setting is On, letting the monitor go to sleep as the system sleeps.
OSD warning message When the monitor enters the Power Saving mode, the following message appears: See Troubleshooting for more information. Setting the maximum resolution To set the maximum resolution for the monitor: In Windows 7, Windows 8, and Windows 8.1: 1. For Windows 8 and Windows 8.1 only, select the Desktop tile to switch to classic desktop. 2. Right-click on the desktop and click Screen Resolution. 3.
If you are using a non-Dell computer (laptop or desktop): • Go to the support site for your computer and download the latest graphic drivers. • Go to your graphics card website and download the latest graphic drivers. Using the tilt, swivel, and vertical extension NOTE: The following instructions are applicable only for attaching the stand that was shipped with your monitor.
Vertical extension NOTE: The stand extends vertically up to 130 mm. The figure below illustrates how to extend the stand vertically.
Using AlienwareFX application AlienwareFX is an application that allows you to access Alienware gaming monitor control center. Using this application you can control the LED lighting color and behaviors for your Alienware gaming monitors. NOTE: The AlienFX application is available for download from: http://www.dell.com/support/home/us/en/04/products/. NOTE: If you have an Alienware Gaming Desktop or Laptop, use AWCC (Alienware Command Center) for controlling the lightings.
Navigating the AlienFX application If all the prerequisites for using AlienFX application are met, double-click the , to access Alienware gaming monitor control shortcut icon on your desktop, center. The following table provides an overview of the application: No. Functions Descriptions A Monitor thumbnails Displays all Alienware gaming monitors connected to your computer through the USB upstream cable. Select a monitor from the thumbnails before making adjustments.
E Minimize Click to minimize the application window. F Close Click to exit the application. NOTE: When you exit the application, the changes you have made will not be saved.
Animation Preset You can choose Morphing, Pulsing, or Spectrum from the preset lighting control panel. Morphing Description The effect changes the light color into another through a seamless transition. To apply the effect: 1. Select Color 1 button to set the starting light color. 2. Pick a preferred color from the color palette (or the list of preset colors). The selected color and its RGB color codes will be displayed. 3. Select Color 2 button to set the ending light color. 4. Repeat step 2. 5.
Spectrum Description The effect makes the light change in sequence of spectrum: red, orange, yellow, green, blue, indigo, and violet. To apply the effect: 1. Select on from the dropdown list. 2. Select Apply to save the changes. NOTE: To turn off the effect, select off. Customizing the preset colors For convenient color usage at your preference, you may create and manage10 sets of preset colors at most. Each set may contain 10 colors, including the default color - black.
Creating a set of preset colors You may create at most 10 sets of preset colors for quick access to your favorite colors. To do this: 1. Click a new color chip, , from the list. 2. Pick a preferred color from the color palette. The selected color and its RGB color codes will be displayed. 3. To add more colors to the list, repeat step 1 and step 2. NOTE: Except the default preset color - black, colors for a total of 9. , you may add new 4.
Changing a preset color To change a preset color: 1. Click to open the list of customized sets. 2. Select the set in which there’s the color item you intend to change. 3. Click the desired chip (with existing color) to highlight it. 4. Pick a preferred color from the color palette. The selected color and its RGB color codes will be displayed. 5. When done, click Update preset to save the changes.
Deleting a preset color 1. Click to open the list of customized sets. 2. Select the set in which there’s the color item you intend to remove. 3. Right-click the desired chip (with existing color) to display the submenu “Delete Color”, and select it to save the changes. 4. When done, click Update preset to save the changes.
Deleting a set of preset colors To delete a customized set of preset colors you have created: 1. Click to open the list. 2. From the opened list, select the set you intend to delete. 3. Click . 4. In the opened window, select OK to save the changes.
Troubleshooting WARNING: Before you begin any of the procedures in this section, follow the Safety instructions. Self-test Your monitor provides a self-test feature that allows you to check whether your monitor is functioning properly. If your monitor and computer are properly connected but the monitor screen remains dark, run the monitor self-test by performing the following steps: 1. Turn off both your computer and the monitor. 2. Unplug the video cable from the back of the computer.
Built-in diagnostics Your monitor has a built-in diagnostic tool that helps you determine if the screen abnormality you are experiencing is an inherent problem with your monitor, or with your computer and video card. NOTE: You can run the built-in diagnostics only when the video cable is unplugged and the monitor is in self-test mode. To run the built-in diagnostics: 1. Ensure that the screen is clean (no dust particles on the surface of the screen). 2.
