Lantana Growing Guide
The growing and care of lantanas (Lantana camara) is simple. These beautiful flowers
have long since been famous for their extended bloom time. There are several
varieties available that offer a bright splash of color. Depending on the region and
type grown, lantana plants can be grown as annuals or perennials. You can grow
lantana flowers in the garden or in containers. Trailing varieties can also be grown in
hanging baskets. Lantanas also are a great option for those wishing to attract
butterflies and hummingbirds to their garden. To grow, simply choose a bright sunny
location and plant them in well-draining soil. Although these plants are tolerant of a
lot of soil conditions, lantana flowers prefer slightly acidic soil. Mulching with pine
needles is an easy way to help increase acidity levels in the soil. Lantanas are
generally but not always planted in spring once the threat of cold weather and frost
have ceased. Keep in mind, however, that they prefer warm and hot temperatures,
so new growth may be slow to appear. Once the temperatures warm up though,
they will have strong growth.
