The Microsoft® Windows® CE-based Handheld PC, or H/PC, is a member of an expanding family of mobile companion devices for Microsoft Windows-based PCs. The software that runs on the H/PG is described in this document. Because the device itself is designed by different manufacturers, and capabilities may vary slightly among models, the device is described in a separate manual provided by your manufacturer.

4 The Handheld PC Companion install Windows CE Services To exchange data between your desktop computer and H/PC, you must install Microsoft Windows CE Services on your desktop computer. With Windows CE Services, you can: + Transfer data (such as Microsoft Word and Microsoft PowerPoint files). + Synchronize time management and contact information (such as calendar events, tasks, Address Book entries, and e-mail). ¢ Back up and restore your H/PC data. + Add programs to and remove programs from your H/PC.

For information on connecting using an infrared (IR} port, a RAS (Remote Access Service) account, or a network account, see Windows CE Services Help. If you selected Auto Connect in the Windows CE Services Setup Wizard, you can simply connect your H/PC to your desktop computer. Otherwise, double-click the Mobile Devices folder in the Explorer window of your desktop computer (or double click the Mobile Devices shortcut on your desktop if you created one during setup).

Replace the ROM Board. Follow the instructions provided by your hardware manufacturer. 3. Run the H/PC Setup Wizard. The H/PC Setup Wizard should appear the first time you start your H/PC, If it doesn’t appear, tap Start, and then tap Run. Type Welcome and tap OK. 4. Install Windows CE Services.

Using Microsoft Office Companion Programs The Microsoft Office companion programs consist of Microsoft Pocket Word, Microsoft Pocket Excel, and Microsoft Pocket PowerPoint. Each of these programs works together with the Windows versions of the same program on your desktop computer. An automatic conversion takes place when you copy these types of files between the two computers. See Windows CE Services Help for more information.
30 The Handheld PC Companion Pocket Excel: creating spreadsheets Pocket Excel provides much of the same functionality as Excel on your desktop computer. For example, you can enter formulas and functions. Because your H/PC screen displays a limited number of cells, use the sort feature to display the information you want. Using the Zoom command on the View menu, zoom in to easily see the details and zoom out to see more content. + View more content. Tap Full Screen on the View menu to use the entire screen to display content. + Protect your documents. Set passwords on Pocket Word or Pocket Excel files to protect your data.

Using a modem, you can connect to the Internet, to your corporate network, browse the Web, and exchange e-mail, as described in *Communicating remotely.” Remote communications include dial-up connections, LAN connections, and wireless connections. You'll be communicating with a service provider, your corporate network (using a RAS account), or your desktop computer.
36 The Handheld PC Companion Your H/PC is set up by default to synchronize automatically at 19200 baud. If you change the baud rate on your desktop computer, you'll need to make the same change on your H/PC. While connected, synchronization happens according 1o the synchronization options you've chosen in Windows CE Services (automatically upon connecting, whenever information is out-of-date, or whenever requested).
38 The Handheld PC Companion synchronize remotely, you must first install Windows CE Services and create a partnership, as described in “Setting Up a New H/PC.” Setup for the H/PC + In Remote Networking, create a different dial-up connection for each computer or network you want 10 access remotely. For example, you'd create a connection to access your Internet account and a different connection to access your corporate network. A wizard will walk you through the setup process.

Optimize battery life You want your H/PC batteries to last as long as possible, especially when you're on the road. Under normal conditions, you can get many hours of use from a single set of batteries (15 hours on average). Here are a few tips to help you get the most from them. Note: When batteries are low, you will see a battery con in the taskbar.
44 The Handheld PC Companion Protect important information You may keep valuable data on your H/PC, such as names and phone numbers of important contacts, credit card numbers, and confidential documents. Here are a couple of things you can do to protect your important information. Use a password You can set two types of passwords: a password that must be entered before you are allowed to access windows CE and passwords to open individual Microsoft Pocket Word or Microsoft Pocket Excel files.

Communications This section covers situations you may encounter when trying to connect your H/PC to other sources of information. Modem communications Can't dial out Make sure the modem is firmly seated and connected to your H/PC and the telephone jack. Verify that the telephone line is analog.
48 The Handheld PC Companion Can't access the World Wide Web If you can connect to your Internet service provider but are unable to access the Web, verify that you aren’t set up to use a proxy server: 1. On the H/PC desktop, double-tap The Internet icon. 2. On the View menu, tap Options. 3. Tap the Proxy Server tab. 4. Clear Use Proxy Server, Can't open a particular Web page If you can access the World Wide Web but can't open a particular Web page, verify that the address you typed is correct.
50 The Handheld PC Companion Screen is hard to read H/PC screens without back lighting can be hard to read under reduced light. Position a lamp so that the light shines directly on the screen. if you're having a hard time viewing a Pocket Word or Pocket Excel file, try changing the size of the view. To do this, tap Zoom on the View menu. If you're having a hard time viewing Pocket Outlook data, try enlarging the display font. To do this, tap Options on the Tools menu.
