This chapter gives a general description of the ASUS V-Series P8H77E. The chapter lists system features, physical descriptions of the front and rear panels, and an overview of internal components.
1.1 Welcome! Thank you for choosing the ASUS V-P8H77E! The ASUS V9- P8H77E is an all-in-one barebone system with versatile home entertainment features. The system comes in a stylish casing and powered by the ASUS motherboard that supports the Third Generation Intel® Core™ i7 / Core™ i5 / Core™ i3 processors in the 1155-land package. The system supports up to 32 GB of system memory using DDR3-1600/1333/1066 DIMMs. High-resolution graphics via integrated graphics controller or PCI Express 2.0 / 3.

1. Voltage selector. This switch allows you to adjust the system input voltage according to the voltage supply in your area. See the section Voltage selector on page 1-7 before adjusting this switch. 2. Power connector. This connector is for the power cable and plug. 3. PS/2 keyboard/mouse combo port. This connector is for a PS/2 keyboard or mouse. 4. USB 2.0 ports 1 ~ 4. These 4-pin Universal Serial Bus (USB) ports are available for connecting USB 2.0 devices. 5. HDMI port.

Voltage selector The PSU has a 115 V/230 V voltage selector switch located beside the power connector. Use this switch to select the appropriate system input voltage according to the voltage supply in your area. If the voltage supply in your area is 100‑127 V, set this switch to 115 V. If the voltage supply in your area is 200‑240 V, set this switch to 230 V.

Chapter 2 Starting up This chapter provides an overview of booting up for the first time and installing drivers and utilities from the support DVD.
2.1 Installing an operating system The barebone system supports Windows® 7 operating systems (OS). Always install the latest OS version and corresponding updates so you can maximize the features of your hardware. Motherboard settings and hardware options vary. Use the setup procedures presented in this chapter for general reference only. Refer to your OS documentation for more information. 2.2 Powering up Press the system power button ( ) to enter the OS. Press to turn ON the system 2.
2.3.1 Running the support DVD To begin using the support DVD, place the DVD in your optical drive. The DVD automatically displays the Drivers menu if Autorun is enabled on your computer. Click an icon to display support DVD/motherboard information Click an item to install If Autorun is NOT enabled in your computer, browse the contents of the support DVD to locate the file ASSETUP.EXE from the BIN folder. Double-click the ASSETUP.EXE to run the DVD.
2.3.2 Utilities menu The Utilities menu shows the applications that the motherboard supports. ASUS InstAll Installs all the utilities through the Installation Wizard. ASUS AI Manager Installs ASUS AI Manager. Adobe Reader X Installs the Adobe® Reader X that allows you to open, view, and print documents in Portable Document Format (PDF). ASUS Easy Update Installs ASUS Easy Update utility. ASUS WebStorage Installs the ASUS WebStorage utility. ASUS Vibe Installs the ASUS Vibe utility.
2.3.3 Make Disk menu The Make disk menu allows you to make an AHCI/RAID driver disk. 2.3.4 Manual menu The Manual menu contains the list of supplementary user manuals. Click an item to open the folder of the user manual. Most user manuals are in Portable Document Format (PDF). Install Adobe® Reader from the Utilities menu before opening a user manual.
2.3.5 ASUS Contact information Click the Contact tab to display the ASUS contact information. You can also find this information on the inside front cover of this user guide. 2.3.6 Other information The icons on the top right corner of the screen give additional information on the motherboard and the contents of the support DVD. Click an icon to display the specified information. Motherboard Info Displays the general specifications of the motherboard.
Browse this DVD Displays the support DVD contents in graphical format. Filelist Displays the contents of the support DVD and a brief description of each in text format.
2.4 Software information Most of the applications in the support DVD have wizards that will conveniently guide you through the installation. View the online help or readme file that came with the software for more information. 2.4.1 AI Suite II ASUS AI Suite II is an all-in-one interface that integrates several ASUS utilities and allows users to launch and operate these utilities simultaneously. Installing AI Suite II To install AI Suite II: 1. Place the support DVD in the optical drive.
EPU EPU is an energy-efficient tool that satisfies different computing needs. This utility provides several modes that you can select to save system power. Selecting Auto mode will have the system shift modes automatically according to current system status. Launching EPU After installing AI Suite II from the support DVD, launch EPU by clicking Tool > EPU on the AI Suite II main menu bar.
Probe II Probe II is a utility that monitors the computer’s vital components, and detects and alerts you of any problem with these components. Probe II monitors fan rotations, CPU temperature, and system voltages, among others. With this utility, you are assured that your computer is always in a healthy working condition. Launching Probe II After installing AI Suite II from the support DVD, launch Probe II by clicking Tool > Probe II on the AI Suite II main menu bar.
Sensor Recorder Sensor Recorder allows you to monitor the changes in the system voltage, temperature, and fan speed, as well as recording the changes. Launching Sensor Recorder After installing AI Suite II from the support DVD, ������ click Tool > Sensor Recorder on the AI Suite II main menu bar to launch Sensor Recorder. Configuring Sensor Recorder Click the Voltage/Temperature/Fan Speed tabs and select the sensors that you want to monitor.
Ai Charger Ai Charger is a unique software that allows you to quickly charge your Apple devices such as iPod, iPhone, and iPad on your ASUS computer’s USB 2.0 / USB 3.0 port. • There are no configuration screens for Ai Charger. After installation, the Ai Charger icon appears on the Windows® taskbar. • The Ai Charger icon will be displayed on the taskbar if an Apple device is connected to your computer’s USB port. • Your Apple device can only be detected if the Apple USB driver is properly installed.
Monitor Click Monitor on the toolbar to quickly launch the Sensor and CPU Frequency screens. Sensor The Sensor panel ������������������������������������������������������������������������ displays the current value of a system sensor such as fan rotation, CPU temperature, and voltages. Click Monitor > Sensor on the AI Suite II main menu bar to launch the Sensor panel.
Update The Update section allows you to update the motherboard BIOS and the BIOS boot logo with the ASUS designed update utilities. ASUS Update The ASUS Update is a utility that allows you to manage, save, and update the motherboard BIOS in Windows® OS. The ASUS Update utility allows you to update the BIOS directly from the Internet, download the latest BIOS file from the Internet, update the BIOS from an updated BIOS file, save the current BIOS file or view the BIOS version information.
3. Select the BIOS version that you want to download. Click Next. When an updated version is not available, the current BIOS will be displayed on the right panel. Downloading the BIOS from the Internet To download the BIOS from the Internet: 1. From the ASUS Update screen, select Download BIOS from Internet, and then click Next. 2. Select the ASUS FTP site nearest you to avoid network traffic. Type or browse for the location where you want the BIOS file to be downloaded. Click Next.
3. Select the BIOS version that you want to download, and click Next. Click Finish to complete the process. 4. You can decide whether to change the BIOS boot logo, which is the image appearing on screen during the Power‑On Self-Tests (POST). Click Yes if you want to change the boot logo or No to continue. 5. Follow the onscreen instructions to complete the update process. Updating the BIOS through a BIOS file To update the BIOS through a BIOS file: 1.
2. Locate the BIOS file, click Open, and click Next. 3. Click Yes if you want to change the boot logo or No to continue. 4. Follow the onscreen instructions to complete the update process. ASUS MyLogo The ASUS MyLogo utility lets you customize the boot logo. The boot logo is the image that appears on screen during the Power‑On Self-Tests (POST). ASUS MyLogo is automatically installed when you install the ASUS Update utility from the Support DVD.
Changing the Boot Logo and updating the BIOS to the motherboard: 1. From the ASUS Update screen, select MyLogo, and then click Next. 2. Select Change the BIOS boot logo of my motherboard, then click Next. 3. Locate the picture that you want to use as your BIOS boot logo������� , then click Next. 4. ������������������������������� The system starts updating the BIOS and loading the new boot logo.
5. Click Yes to reboot the system for the changes to take effect. 6. Once finished, you can click Home to return to the utility main screen or exit from the application. Changing the Boot Logo of a downloaded BIOS file: 1. From the ASUS Update screen, select MyLogo, and then click Next. 2. Select Change the boot logo of a downloaded BIOS file (But do not update this BIOS to my motherboard).
3. Locate the picture that you want to use as your BIOS boot logo������������� , then click Next. 4. ��������������������������� The system starts updating the BIOS and loading the new boot logo. 5. 2-20 Click Yes to reboot the system for the changes to take effect.
System Information The System Information section displays the information about the motherboard, CPU and memory slots and disks. • Click the MB tab to see the details on the motherboard manufacturer, product name, version, and BIOS. • Click the CPU tab to see the details on the processor and the Cache. • Click the Memory tab and then select the memory slot to see the details on the memory module installed on the corresponding slot.
• Click the Disk tab and then select the disk volume to see the details in the disks installed in the system. Support The Support section displays ASUS support information. • 2-22 Click the arrow controls on the bottom panel to scroll to the right. Click Support.
Settings The Settings section allows you to customize the main menu bar and the interface appearance. • Click the arrow controls on the bottom panel to scroll to the right to display the Settings button. Click Settings. Switch to the Bar tab to modify toolbar settings.
2.4.2 ASUS AI Manager ASUS AI Manager is a utility that gives you quick and easy access to frequently-used applications. Installing AI Manager To install AI Manager on your computer: 1. Place the support DVD in the optical drive. If Autorun is enabled, the Drivers installation wizard appears. If Autorun is not enabled in your computer, locate the setup.exe file from the ASUS AI Manager folder in the support DVD. Double-click the setup.exe file to start installation. 2.
AI Manager quick bar The AI Manager quick bar conserves desktop space and allows you to launch the ASUS utilities or display system information easily. Click the Main, My Favorites, Support or Information tab to display the menu’s contents. Click the Maximize/restore button to switch between full window and quick bar. Click the Minimize button to keep the AI Manager on the taskbar. Click the Close button to quit the AI Manager.
To unlock the selected device: 1. Clear the checkbox of the selected device, then click Apply. 2. Key in the password you have set previously, then click Ok. The selected device is unlocked. To change password: Click Change Password, then follow the on-screen instructions to change password. AI Booting AI Booting allows you to specify the boot device priority sequence. To specify the boot sequence: 1. Select a device, then click on the left/right button to specify the boot sequence. 2.
2.4.3 ASUS Webstorage ASUS webstorage is designed to help you retrieve your data from your notebooks, smartphones or tablets wherever there is internet connection. Installing webstorage To install webstorage: Place the support DVD in the optical drive. Double-click the setup.exe file from the ASUS WebStorage folder in the Software folder in the support DVD. Launching Webstorage To launch the WebStorage from the Windows® desktop, click Start > All Programs > ASUS > Webstorage.
Calendar ASUS WebStorage automatically syncs calendar events across your PCs, helping you track appointments and events no matter which PC you use. BookmarkSyncer BookmarkSyncer keeps your browser preferences and bookmarks synchronized across all your PCs. MobileApp ASUS WebStorage mobile applications sync your files between multiple devices. It also supports video transcoding that allows you to preview and stream files and multimedia to your mobile phone.
2.4.4 ASUS @ Vibe ASUS @Vibe is a one-stop, preinstalled repository that provides access to a wide variety of content including music, videos, radio stations, games, magazines, e-books, e-learning materials, and Live TV. Gaming Enjoy one-hour free acess to a huge range of games including releases exclusive only to ASUS users. Learning Select online learning courses for elementary, junior, and graduate levels.

This chapter provides details about the motherboard that comes with the system. This chapter includes the motherboard layout, jumper settings, and connector locations.
3.1 Introduction The Vintage V-P8H77E barebone system comes with an ASUS motherboard. This chapter provides technical information about the motherboard for future upgrades or system reconfiguration. 3.2 Motherboard layout 24.4cm(9.6in) KB_USB34 CPU_FAN DIGI +EPU HDMI ASM 1442 MemOK! 3.3 Jumper Clear RTC RAM (3-pin CLRTC) This jumper allows you to clear the Real Time Clock (RTC) RAM in CMOS. You can clear the CMOS memory of date, time, and system setup parameters by erasing the CMOS RTC RAM data. The onboard button cell battery powers the RAM data in CMOS, which include system setup information such as system passwords. To erase the RTC RAM: 1. Turn OFF the computer and unplug the power cord. 2. Move the jumper cap from pins 1-2 (default) to pins 2-3.
3.4 1. Connectors Intel® H77 Serial ATA 3.0Gb/s connectors (7-pin SATA3G_1~4 [blue]) These connectors connect to Serial ATA 3.0 Gb/s hard disk drives and optical drives via Serial ATA 3.0 Gb/s signal cables.
2. Connect the USB module cable to any of these connectors, then install the module to a slot opening at the back of the system chassis. These USB connectors comply with USB 2.0 specification that supports up to 480 Mbps connection speed. CPU, chassis and power fan connectors (4-pin CPU_FAN, 3-pin CHA_FAN1/2, 3-pin PWR_FAN) Connect the fan cables to the fan connectors on the motherboard, ensuring that the black wire of each cable matches the ground pin of the connector. 10. ATX power connectors (24-pin EATXPWR, 8-pin EATX12V) These connectors are for ATX power supply plugs. The power supply plugs are designed to fit these connectors in only one orientation. Find the proper orientation and push down firmly until the connectors completely fit.
11. Connect the chassis power LED cable to this connector.
3.4 MemOK! Switch Installing DIMMs that are incompatible with the motherboard may cause system boot failure, and the DRAM_LED near the MemOK! switch lights continuously. Press and hold the MemOK! switch until the DRAM_LED starts blinking to begin automatic memory compatibility tuning for successful boot. 3.5 1. Onboard LEDs Standby Power LED The motherboard comes with a standby power LED that lights up to indicate that the system is ON, in sleep mode, or in soft-off mode. This is a reminder that you should shut down the system and unplug the power cable before removing or plugging in any motherboard component. Chapter 4 BIOS setup This chapter provides a detailed guide to navigating and setting up the BIOS.
4.1 Managing and updating your BIOS BIOS (Basic Input and Output System) stores system settings such as storage device configuration, overclocking settings, advanced power management, and boot device configuration that are needed for system startup in the motherboard CMOS. In normal circumstances, the default BIOS settings provide optimum performance in most operating conditions.
4.1.1 ASUS Update utility ASUS Update is a utility that allows you to manage, save, and update the motherboard BIOS in Windows® environment. • ASUS Update requires an Internet connection either through a network or an Internet Service Provider (ISP). • This utility is available in the support DVD that comes with the motherboard package. Installing ASUS Update To install ASUS Update: 1. Place the support DVD in the optical drive. The Drivers menu appears. 2.
4.1.2 ASUS EZ Flash 2 The ASUS EZ Flash 2 feature allows you to update the BIOS without using an OS‑based utility. Before you start using this utility, download the latest BIOS ROM and Cap file from the ASUS website at www.asus.com. To update the BIOS using EZ Flash 2: 1. Insert the USB flash disk that contains the latest BIOS file to the USB port. 2. Enter the Advanced Mode of the BIOS setup program. Go to the Tool menu to select ASUS EZ Flash Utility and press to enable it.
4.1.3 ASUS CrashFree BIOS 3 The ASUS CrashFree BIOS 3 is an auto recovery tool that allows you to restore the BIOS file when it fails or gets corrupted during the updating process. You can restore a corrupted BIOS file using the motherboard support DVD or a USB flash drive that contains the updated BIOS file. The BIOS file in the support DVD may not be the latest version. Download the latest BIOS file from the ASUS website at www.asus.com. Recovering the BIOS To recover the BIOS: 1. Turn on the system.
4.1.4 ASUS BIOS Updater The ASUS BIOS Updater allows you to update the BIOS from within a DOS environment. This utility also allows you to backup the current BIOS file for use when the BIOS fails or gets corrupted during the BIOS upgrade. The succeeding utility screens are for reference only. The actual utility screen may not be the same as shown here. Before updating the BIOS 1. Prepare the motherboard support DVD and a USB flash drive.

Select the Load Optimized Defaults item under the Exit menu. Refer to section 4.

Advanced Mode The Advanced Mode provides advanced options for experienced end-users to configure the BIOS settings. The figure below shows an example of the Advanced Mode. Refer to the following sections for the detailed configurations. To access the EZ Mode, click Exit, then select ASUS EZ Mode.
Menu items The highlighted item on the menu bar displays the specific items for that menu. For example, selecting Main shows the Main menu items. The other items (Ai Tweaker, Advanced, Monitor, Boot, Tool, and Exit) on the menu bar have their respective menu items. Back button This button appears when entering a submenu. Press or use the USB mouse to click this button to return to the previous menu screen.
4.3 Main menu The Main menu screen appears when you enter the Advanced Mode of the BIOS Setup program. The Main menu provides you an overview of the basic system information, and allows you to set the system date, time, language, and security settings. Administrator Password If you have set an administrator password, we recommend that you enter the administrator password for accessing the system. Otherwise, you might be able to see or change only selected fields in the BIOS setup program. To set an administrator password: 1. Select the Administrator Password item and press . 2. 4.4 Advanced menu The Advanced menu items allow you to change the settings for the CPU and other system devices. Be cautious when changing the settings of the Advanced menu items. Incorrect field values can cause the system to malfunction.

iGPU Memory [64M] Allows you to set the iGPU memory size. The number of device items that appears on the screen depends on the number of devices installed on the system. Click an item to start booting from the selected device. 4.7 Tools menu The Tools menu items allow you to configure options for special functions.
4.8 Exit menu The Exit menu items allow you to load the optimal default values for the BIOS items, and save or discard your changes to the BIOS items. You can access the EZ Mode from the Exit menu.
