Getting Started 1 The Motion Computing LE1700 is a full-featured Tablet PC, combining performance, long battery life, and a lightweight, sleek design. The LE1700 offers the latest innovations in mobile computing: a user-focused design, unmatched mobility, and state-of-the-art security. If you are new to Tablet PCs, use the information in this section to get started quickly. If you are already familiar with tablet computers, you can skip to the next chapter to find out about the features of the LE1700.
Overview The following illustrations show the buttons, slots, and ports on the Motion LE1700 Tablet PC. Although there are no controls on the back side, there is a sliding panel that covers the Extended Battery connector. Setting up the LE1700 The LE1700 is self-contained, so you can start using it immediately. You should connect AC power until the battery is fully charged. Use the following steps to get started. Step 1: Plug in the power adapter • Plug the power cord in to the power adapter. Insert the power cord into an outlet and the power adapter plug into the power adapter port on the Tablet PC.
Step 4: Calibrate the digitizer With a Tablet PC, you frequently use a tablet pen instead of a mouse and keyboard for input. Use the pen to move the pointer around the screen, and tap the screen to click. Use Tablet PC Input Panel and handwriting recognition to enter text. The digitizer detects the position of the pen or your finger on the display. You should calibrate the digitizer the first time you start the Tablet PC, and again whenever the pointer does not align with the pen tip or your finger.
Features 2 The Motion Computing LE1700 Tablet PC has the power and features of a notebook computer, while giving you the added mobility and versatility of a tablet computer. Use the information in this chapter to get more familiar with the hardware features of your LE1700 Tablet PC, such as buttons, slots, connectors, and wireless adapters The LE1700 Tablet PC includes the following features: • Intel® Core™2 Duo 1.5 GHz Processor or Intel® Core™ Solo 1.
Pen An important difference between traditional PCs and Tablet PCs is that you frequently use the tablet pen to interact with the computer instead of a mouse and keyboard. The pen includes a pressure-sensitive tip, a function button, and on some models, an eraser. The pen contains no batteries and requires no external power. Eraser Tip Function button Note: The eraser is not functional on WriteTouch models. For information about using the pen, see “Using the pen” on page 21.
Front panel buttons You can use the buttons on the front of the tablet to perform many functions without having to use the pen. The buttons are customizable, so you can modify their functions to suit the way you work. See “Configuring front panel buttons” on page 25. Status lights You can use the indicator lights on the front of the LE1700 to monitor the status of the tablet. The following illustration shows the status lights on the LE1700.
Windows Security button You can use the Windows Security button to log on to or lock your Tablet PC. Pressing the Windows Security button is equivalent to pressing Ctrl+Alt+Del on a keyboard. Fingerprint reader Using the fingerprint reader, you can log on to your Tablet PC by scanning your fingerprint instead of entering a password. This presents an added level of security for your tablet.
View Anywhere display (optional) The View Anywhere™ display option enhances outdoor viewing and bright-light viewing environments. The View Anywhere display includes all the features of the standard display plus: • A protective layer that improves the sunlight contrast ratio and significantly reduces reflection and glare. • Improved sunlight contrast ratio, which enhances viewability at wide viewing angles. • Reduced reflection and glare and improved light pass-through efficiency.
Infrared (IrDA) Your Tablet PC has integrated Infrared, which you can use to connect your tablet to other computers and devices wirelessly. The LE1700 supports the IrDA standard (Infrared Data Association), which ensures that you can connect to printers, modems, cellular phones, and other devices. Infrared has a range of approximately one meter, and requires line-of-sight alignment between the two devices. USB 2.0 ports Two USB 2.
Security slot You can use the security slot to attach your tablet to a desk, table or other fixture. You must purchase a security lock separately. VGA port You can use the VGA port to connect standard VGA monitors. When you attach an external monitor, you can use the external monitor only, or the external monitor and the Tablet PC display together. See “Setting up an external display” on page 28.
SD (Secure Digital) card slot The SD card slot holds one SD card for storage or accessories. SD memory cards are a storage media that provide large capacity and fast access. • To insert an SD card, place it in the slot, label side up, until it clicks into place. • To remove the SD card, press the card in slightly until it pops out. PC card slot The PC card slot holds one Type-I or Type-II PC card for networking, memory expansion, or accessories. PC cards are also called PCMCIA cards.
Wi-Fi (802.11a/b/g wireless) Your Tablet PC has integrated Wi-Fi (802.11a/b/g) that you can use to connect to the Internet and other computers wirelessly. You can use Wi-Fi in your home, and in many schools, hotels, airports, and restaurants. Note: Wireless access requires an 802.11a, 802.11b, or 802.11g access point. Internet access requires a working Internet connection. Your ability to use Wi-Fi depends on the several conditions: • Distance from the access point.
Antenna The antenna improves the reception of the optional Wireless Broadband adapter. You can raise the antenna if your Wireless Broadband reception is poor. To raise the antenna, insert your finger into the notch and lift up. For information about using Wireless Broadband, see “Using Wireless Broadband” on page 47. Power adapter The power adapter provides power to the Tablet PC and charges the battery when it is in the Tablet PC.
Battery The LE1700 includes a high-capacity Lithium-ion battery that mounts at the top of the Tablet PC. Under normal conditions, you can run the tablet on battery power for up to three hours. You can maximize battery life by optimizing your power scheme. See “Using power management” on page 31. For information about charging and checking battery status, see “Using the battery” on page 34. An optional extended battery is also available.
Using your Tablet PC 3 The LE1700 Tablet PC runs Microsoft Windows XP Tablet PC edition, which includes ink-totext and word recognition, voice recognition, and improved security to help defend against viruses, worms, and other threats. And unlike PDAs or other handheld devices, the LE1700 can run any Windows XP-compatible application.
Using Motion Dashboard Motion Dashboard puts many common tablet-related settings and tasks at your fingertips. For example, you can enable or disable Bluetooth and Wi-Fi, calibrate the digitizer, or check your remaining battery power. To start Motion Dashboard • Press the Dashboard button ( ) on the front of the tablet. You can use Motion Dashboard in the Category view (default) or the Classic view. Use the Show All Settings button to go to Classic view.
Using the pen You can use the tablet pen to write on the display and navigate the operating system. A pen can feel more natural in your hand than a mouse, and you can use the pen while standing or walking. The following table show the various pen actions and their mouse equivalents.
Using Tablet PC Input Panel You can use Tablet PC Input Panel instead of a keyboard to enter text on your Tablet PC. Use the writing pad or the character pad to convert your handwriting to text, or tap characters using the on-screen keyboard. You can also use Input Panel to dictate text or use voice commands. For more information about Speech Recognition, see “Using speech recognition” on page 30. The following illustration shows Input Panel open to the writing pad.
Using WriteTouch If your Tablet PC includes the WriteTouch option, you can use the tablet pen or touch screen for input. For more information, see “WriteTouch” on page 8. Opening WriteTouch Tablet Settings Use the WriteTouch Tablet Settings window to configure the options for WriteTouch input. To open WriteTouch Tablet Settings • In Control Panel, open WriteTouch Tablet Settings. You can also open the WriteTouch Tablet Settings by tapping the WriteTouch icon ( the notification area.
Switching input modes using the switching gesture If you have configured the input mode to Auto mode, you use the switching gesture to change modes. The icon in the notification area changes to indicate the current mode. Icon Mode Pen and auto Touch Selecting a switching gesture Use the switching gesture to switch between pen mode and touch mode. You must have the input mode set to Auto to use a switching gesture. To select a switching gesture 1. Open the WriteTouch Tablet Settings window (page 23). 2.
Configuring front panel buttons As you become more familiar with your Tablet PC, you may want to customize the buttons on the front panel. You can configure the buttons to start your favorite program, run a command, or enter a key combination. Esc Function Directional pad Hot 1 Hot 2 To change the front panel buttons 1. Open Motion Dashboard to the Pen panel (page 20). 2.Tap Pen and Button Options. 3. Tap the Tablet Buttons tab. 4. Select the button combination you want to change.
Using USB You can use the two integrated USB 2.0 ports to connect USB devices, such as digital cameras, printers, external storage devices, keyboards, and mice. USB devices typically use power from the computer, so you should use AC power or have adequate battery power while you are using USB devices. To use a USB device, connect the device to the USB port ( ) on the side of the Tablet PC. When you connect a USB device, the Tablet PC recognizes it and loads the appropriate device driver.
Rotating the display You can easily change the screen orientation to fit your current task. You may want to use the portrait orientation for filling out forms or reading an e-book. At other times, you may want a landscape orientation for Web browsing or sketching. To rotate the display • Press the Rotate ( ) button on the front of the tablet. Note: If you change the screen orientation, you may need to recalibrate the tablet pen. See “Calibrate the digitizer” on page 6.
Setting up an external display If you want more desktop real estate, or the flexibility of multiple monitors, you can connect an external display, such as a monitor or projector. You can extend your display to the external monitor, mirror your display on the external monitor, or use the external monitor only. Because the tablet pen does not work on the external display, you should typically use a keyboard and mouse when you have an external display attached. To set up an external monitor 1.
Using the built-in microphones You can use the built-in microphones to record audio, dictate notes, and use voice commands. The two microphones are used at the same time to optimize sound detection for speech recognition and voice recording. You can use the Speak Anywhere acoustics software to fine tune the built-in microphones to suit your environment.
Setting up the skew angle The default sound detection area is directly in front of the Tablet PC, but you can use the skew angle to offset the sound detection area toward one side or the other. To set up the skew angle 1. Open Motion Dashboard to the Audio panel (page 20). 2. Under Microphone, ensure that Narrow Angle or Medium Angle is selected. You cannot use a skew angle with the Wide angle setting. 3. Move to where you want the microphone to detect your voice. 4. Tap Calibrate. A block of text appears.
Setting up speech recognition Before you can use speech recognition, you must configure the microphones and train the system for the characteristics of your voice. The entire process takes about 10 minutes. You should move to a quiet environment before starting this procedure. To set up speech recognition 1. Open Motion Dashboard to the Audio panel (page 20). 2. Ensure that the speakers and microphone are set to appropriate levels. 3. Start Input Panel (page 22). 4.
Alarms Use the Alarms tab to specify the point at which battery alarms are activated for the low and critically low battery level states. You can also define what happens when that battery level is reached. For example, you may choose to have the tablet sound an alarm, or you may prefer to receive a visual reminder. Power Meter Use the Power Meter tab to see a visual indication of the power status. If you select the Show Details option, you can tap a battery icon for more information.
Using Standby Standby is a state in which your display and hard disks turn off, so that your computer uses less power. When you want to use the computer again, it comes out of standby quickly, although you may have to log on again. Use standby to save power when you will be away from the computer for a short time while working. Because Standby does not save your desktop state to disk, a power failure while on Standby can cause you to lose unsaved information. To put your computer on Standby 1.
Using the battery The Tablet PC runs on battery power when it is not plugged in. The standard battery is located at the top of the Tablet PC. Checking battery power You can check the remaining battery power from Motion Dashboard, from the battery icon in the notification area, or from the battery itself. To check the remaining battery power • Open Motion Dashboard to the Power panel (page 20). You can also place the pointer over the battery icon in the notification area.
Removing and replacing the battery You can remove the battery to check the remaining power, or to replace it with a fully charged battery. To remove the battery 1. Ensure that the Tablet PC is plugged in or turned off. 2. Turn the Tablet PC over so that the back side is up. 3. Slide the locking latch toward the center of the battery to unlock it. 4. Slide the spring-loaded latch toward the center of the battery and hold it while you remove the battery.
Disposing of used batteries Lithium-ion (Li-ion) batteries should be disposed of at a hazardous materials recycling center when it is no longer serviceable. Do not throw it in a waste receptacle because the battery could end up in a landfill. Battery and power management tips • To lengthen the battery’s usable life, use AC power when you can. The battery will charge automatically while you run on AC power, so leave the battery in the tablet while you are working.
Using Motion OmniPass and the fingerprint reader Motion OmniPass offers a secure and convenient system for managing your passwords and providing confidentiality for your sensitive data through file encryption. To start Motion OmniPass • In the notification area, double-tap the Motion OmniPass icon ( ). You can also start Motion OmniPass from the Security panel of Motion Dashboard. The following illustration shows the Motion OmniPass Control Center.
Capturing a fingerprint After you capture your fingerprints, you can associate the fingerprints with an OmniPass user. This offers a quick and convenient way to log on to your Tablet PC, provides global password management, and helps protect your data from unauthorized access. Use this procedure to enroll a new user and capture a fingerprint for authentication. To capture a fingerprint 1. Start Motion OmniPass (page 37) and tap Run Enrollment Wizard. 2.
After you have successfully captured your fingerprint, scan your fingerprint one more time for verification. 6. Tap Next, then tap Yes if you want to enroll a second fingerprint (recommended). If you injure a finger, you can use a second finger to authenticate. You can also capture a second fingerprint later. From the OmniPass Control Center, tap Run Enrollment Wizard, then tap Modify a user’s device enrollment. 7. Select I am done with enrolling security authentication devices and tap Next. 8.
Fingerprint reader tips • Be consistent. Hold your finger and scan at the same angle each time. For example, if you enroll your finger with your hand open, hold your hand this way each time you scan. • The scanner is bi-directional. You can move your finger from right to left or left to right. • Read the prompts carefully and ensure that you wait for the prompt before you swipe. • Swiping too fast or too slow can make a capture unsuccessful. Change the swipe speed until you learn what speed works best.
Using the password wizard Certain applications require more sophisticated user input for authentication. For these applications, you may need to use the password wizard to set up password replacement. To run the password wizard 1. Start Motion OmniPass (page 37). 2. In the left pane, tap Password Wizard. 3. Follow the instructions in the wizard program. Logging on to a remembered site To log on to a remembered site, open the Web site or application that you have set up with password replacement.
Setting up strong logon security For an additional level of security, you can enable strong logon security. Strong logon security forces you to authenticate with a specific security device (such as the fingerprint reader or a Smart Card) before allowing access to Windows. After strong logon security is enabled, the Windows Welcome screen and Windows Fast User Switching are disabled. To enable strong logon security 1. Start Motion OmniPass (page 37). 2. Tap Change Your OmniPass Settings. 3.
Using Windows Security Center Windows Security Center provides a central location for you to manage your computer’s security settings and learn more about improving security. If a problem is detected (such as an out-of-date antivirus application), the Security Center sends you an alert and provides recommendations for how to remedy the situation. Windows Security Center manages the following: • Windows Firewall.
Setting up users and passwords You can use different types of user accounts and passwords to create various levels of protection for your Tablet PC and its data, depending on the level of security that you need. Setting up Windows user accounts You can use Windows user accounts to help secure the files on your computer from other users. You must have an administrator account on the computer to add a new user to the computer. To set up a Windows user account 1. In Control Panel, open User Accounts. 2.
Setting up a hard disk drive (HDD) password You can use a HDD password to protect the computer and the hard disk drive. The computer cannot be started without the HDD password, and the data on the disk drive cannot be accessed, even if it is removed and attached to a different computer. To set up an HDD password 1. Start the Tablet PC. 2. When the Motion Computing splash screen appears, press the Rotate button ( you miss the splash screen, restart the computer and try again. ). If 3.
Using Wi-Fi (802.11a/b/g) Use the information in this section to set up a Wi-Fi connection. Wireless access requires an 802.11a, 802.11b, or 802.11g access point. Internet access requires a working Internet connection. WARNING: FAA regulations require that you disable any wireless connection when traveling by air. Failure to disable the wireless connection on the Tablet PC while traveling by air can cause communications problems with aircraft instruments.
Using Wireless Broadband Use the information in this section to set up a Wireless Broadband connection. Wireless Broadband access requires a service contract from a Broadband Wireless service provider. For more information, see “Wireless Broadband” on page 16. WARNING: FAA regulations require that you disable any wireless connection when traveling by air. Failure to disable the wireless connection on the Tablet PC while traveling by air can cause communications problems with aircraft instruments.
Connecting and disconnecting Use the connection manager software to connect to your provider’s Wireless Broadband network. To connect and disconnect 1. Start the connection manager (page 47). 2. Do one of the following: • To connect, click Connect. • To disconnect, click Disconnect. Finding your ESN The ESN (Electronic Serial Number) uniquely identifies your Tablet PC on a Wireless Broadband network. You may need your ESN when you activate your service. To find your ESN 1.
Using Bluetooth You can use Bluetooth® to connect to accessory devices or other computers. The devices can communicate with each other when they are in range. For more information, see “Bluetooth wireless” on page 16. Enabling or disabling Bluetooth Before you can set up a Bluetooth device, you must enable the Bluetooth adapter on the Tablet PC. After you enable Bluetooth, the Bluetooth icon ( ) appears in the notification area.
The Bluetooth device is ready to use. Paired devices are shown in the Bluetooth Settings window. The following illustration shows a Bluetooth Settings window with a Bluetooth keyboard and mouse. If the device is not discovered… If the Bluetooth device is not detected after multiple attempts, try the following: • Ensure that Bluetooth is enabled (page 49). • Ensure that the device you are adding is discoverable. See the manufacturer’s documentation for more information.
Bluetooth wireless tips Motion Computing and its Bluetooth partners have worked to ensure a positive experience with this technology, and to ensure Bluetooth interoperability. In doing so, we have found the following issues: • If you are running Bluetooth and Wi-Fi at the same time, interference can affect the Bluetooth performance. This is most noticeable when you try to transfer large amounts of data, such as file transfers or printing large documents.
Using infrared You can use infrared to connect to printers, modems, cellular phones, and other devices. Use the Wireless Link window to control infrared connections. To open the Wireless Link window • In Control Panel, open Wireless Link. To establish an infrared connection 1. Ensure that infrared is enabled on both devices. 2. Position the devices so that the two infrared transceivers are pointing at each other, and the devices are within one meter of each other.
Care and Maintenance 4 Proper care and maintenance will keep your Tablet PC working and in good condition for a long time. For general information about care of the Tablet PC and its components and accessories, see the Safety and Regulatory Guide included with your Tablet PC. This chapter describes the care and maintenance procedures for your LE1700 Tablet PC. Important: Follow the guidelines listed below when caring for your Tablet PC and its components.
Standard display • Clean fingerprints and most marks from the display surface by wiping it with the soft cloth (provided). Never spray or pour liquids directly onto the display surface itself. Never use an abrasive cleaner on the display. If liquid is spilled on the display, wipe it up immediately. • If needed, spray a soft cloth (not directly on the display) with a window-type cleaner and wipe the display. • Avoid using tissues or paper towels to clean the display surface.
Cleaning in a health care environment This section describes the cleaning procedures for a Tablet PC in a health care environment. Disinfecting procedures You should periodically disinfect the tablet according to the institutional polices of surface and equipment safety and cleanliness.
Cleaning solutions This section describes various cleaning solutions that have been tested by Motion Computing. Please review the manufacturer's guidelines for proper use of the product. Product Type Manufacturer Comments Alcohol Prep Pads Dynarex For general purpose use only. Not considered a disinfectant for health care environments. Cavi-Wipes Metrex Can be difficult to clean off. Can leave a film on the product.
Pen • Store the pen in the pen bay or in a case when not in use. • Do not store the pen vertically on the tip. Constant pressure on the tip can affect the pen-to-digitizer interaction. • Change the pen tip regularly. See “Replacing pen tips” on page 57. • Do not immerse the pen in liquid. It contains electronic components that could be damaged. • In certain environments, particles or debris can stick to the pen tip or the Tablet PC display.
Traveling with your Tablet PC Use the following tips when you travel with your Tablet PC: • Remove all accessories and cables. Remember to pack those you will need while traveling, including at least one tablet pen. • Put the Tablet PC into a portfolio or other case to protect the display. • Protect the pen by keeping it in the pen bay or in a case during travel. • Pack the Tablet PC securely in a briefcase or hand-carried luggage, and keep it separate from toiletries, liquids, and food.
System repair and recovery If your system shows signs of instability or corruption, you can use this procedure to return your computer to an earlier operating state. Note: You need an external CD-ROM drive for this procedure. In most cases, the setup program can repair damaged Windows components, allowing you to keep your system data, applications, and settings. If the setup program can not repair the damaged components, it will write over your existing data.

Troubleshooting and Support A Motion Computing Tablet PCs are thoroughly tested for performance and quality, but occasionally problems still occur. If you do not find the information you are looking for in this section, go to the Motion Computing support page at www.motioncomputing.com/ support. Troubleshooting Use the information in this section to identify and resolve common issues. If an issue has more than one potential cause, the most common cause is listed first.
The display goes black while the Tablet PC is still turned on • The computer might have turned off the display to save power. To restore the display, touch the screen with the tablet pen or press a button. • The computer might have gone into Standby mode. In Standby mode, the power status light flashes blue. Slide and hold the power switch for about one second. • The computer might have gone into low-battery Hibernation mode. In low-battery Hibernation mode, the power status light is off.
The display is unreadable or distorted • The screen resolution and color quality may be set incorrectly. Use Windows Display Properties to reset the display settings. 1. In Control Panel, open Display. 2. Click the Settings tab. 3. For Screen resolution, select 1024 x 768 4. For Color quality, select Highest (32 bit). • The display driver may have been removed or become corrupted. Use Windows Device Manager to reinstall the driver. 1. In Control Panel, open System. 2.
The buttons on the Tablet PC do not do what I expect them to do • The button functions may have been customized. Ports and connectors The system does not recognize the PC card I inserted • The card might be inserted improperly. Eject the card and re-insert it. Ensure the label side is up. See “PC card slot” on page 15.
No sound is coming from any speakers • The volume may be set too low or muted. You can use Motion Dashboard to increase the volume or turn mute off. • The integrated audio components may have been overwritten. If you install a third-party audio device (such as a USB or Bluetooth device), the integrated audio may stop working. If this happens, reinstall the SigmaTel and Knowles Acoustics audio drivers. After you install these, if you still have problems recording, contact Motion Technical Support.
What do I need to use the Tablet PC in another country? • You will need a travel plug adapter. You can find these in airports and travel stores. You do not need to buy a voltage converter; the Motion AC adapter will automatically adjust to different voltages. How do I clean the View Anywhere display screen? • To clean the View Anywhere display screen, wipe it with a soft cloth (like the one supplied). If needed, clean with any alcohol-based product recommended for use on anti-reflective glass.
