Understanding The Battery
Capacity And The Rated Capacity
Of A Power Bank
The "Battery capacity" is a measure of the charge stored
by the battery, whereas the “Rated Capacity” represents
the output capacity. The reason is, on the one hand, the
battery voltage and output voltage are different, since
Li-ion batteries used in power banks output 3.7 volt
(nominal) but your phones’ batteries get charged at 5.1
volt. On the other hand, energy is also lost during the
conversion process from 3.7 to 5.1 volt, and is
unavoidable in any charging process.
Formula,
Rated Output Capacity = Battery Capacity x Efficiency
(Battery Voltage) x Weighting Coefficient/ Output Voltage
Note: Weighting Coefficient ≤ 1. Because the consistency
of the product can be slightly different, in order to ensure
that each shipped product can meet the rated capacity
requirements, so take a weighting factor less than and
close to 1.
Eg: (Let’s take a 10000mAh power bank as an example.)
Battery Capacity 10000mAh, Battery Voltage 3.7V,
Weighting Coefficient 1, the Efficiency 90%
Rated Capacity = 10000mAh×3.7V×0.9×1/ 5.1V= 6529mAh
The number of identification Rated Capacity is between
6000mAh - 6500mAh.
*Note: Many other factors, such as ambient temperature
and the exact chemistry of the powerbank and
smartphone batteries also determine the real charging
performance of the powerbank.
