1 About TurningKey TurningKey is a lightweight software application that allows presenters to create and deliver new or existing assessments with an audience response system. Presenters can create an answer key assessment from new or existing tests and deliver those tests using Turning Technologies’ XR or NXT ResponseCards.
Technical Requirements Technical Requirements The following requirements are necessary in order for TurningKey to properly function. • Microsoft Windows 32 or 64 bit XP, Vista or 7 • Intel or AMD 600 MHz class processor (1 GHz or higher recommended) • 256 MB RAM • 60 MB hard disk space (an additional 32 MB is required if you do not have Microsoft .NET Framework 2.0 installed) • 1024 x 768 resolution at 32-bit color or higher • Turning Technologies ResponseCard XR with at least a 2.
Getting Started Getting Started Downloading TurningKey To ensure that the latest version available is installed, download TurningKey from the Turning Technologies website. How to download TurningKey... 1 Go to www.TurningTechnologies.com/downloads. 2 Click the Legacy tab and select TurningKey for PC. • Release notes are available in PDF format to the right of the download link. 3 Enter the required information and click Submit. 4 Click the link to start the download.
Getting Started 3 Open the unzipped folder and double-click TurningKey.exe. Note Create a shortcut for TurningKey.exe on your desktop for quicker access to the application. Do not remove the TurningKey.exe file from the folder. If the file is removed the application will not function properly. Configuring TurningKey for Automatic Updates TurningKey has a feature which checks for updates and immediately applies them to the software.
Getting Started Setting the Default Save Location The default save location for participant lists, sessions and answer keys can be set to a user preferred location. Network resources can be specified as the default save location. How to set the default save location... 1 Click Tools on the TurningKey menu bar and select Settings. 2 Select the Application tab. 3 Click Browse... to navigate to the desired save location.
2 Answer Keys In TurningKey, an Answer Key is a document that contains the answers to a set of questions.
Using Answer Keys Using Answer Keys An Answer Key must be loaded prior to starting the test. Creating a New Answer Key An Answer Key can be based off of a Word document, PDF, spreadsheet, etc. How to create a new Answer Key... 1 Click New Key on the TurningKey toolbar. The TurningKey Information window appears.
Using Answer Keys 2 Enter the appropriate information in the fields provided: Field Name Description Number of Versions The number of test versions to be created for the answer key. A valid entry is a whole number between 1 and 20. Number of Questions The number of questions to be included in the Answer Key. A valid entry is a whole number between 1 and 100 for the XR or 1 and 200 for the NXT. Correct The default point value for a correct answer.
Using Answer Keys The following symbols are supported for ResponseCard NXT: space . , ‘ “ ? ! @ # $ % ^ & * ( ) _ + - = / < > The following symbols are supported for ResponseCard XR: space . , ! @ % ^ & * ( ) + - / • Numeric Response • Matching - Does allow for duplicate answers and is order specific. • True/False • Essay - Essay responses are not graded by TurningKey; participant responses can be viewed in the Individual Results Report and the Individual Score Report.
Using Answer Keys • Insert new question at the bottom 3 Click OK. For multiple test versions... 1 Click Insert Question. 2 Select the radio button for the insertion point of the new question for each version of the test. 3 Select to insert the question before or after the insertion point. Removing a Question from an Answer Key A question can be easily removed from an Answer Key. For a single test version... 1 Select the question to be removed. 2 Click Remove Question.
Standards Standards TurningKey’s Standards Tool allows for the use of built-in standards (per state or country, type, subject and grade level) to create custom lists of standards on which participants can be evaluated. Participants’ results can be reviewed by standards Reports. Downloading K-12 Standards Active internet access is required to download the K-12 standards. How to download K-12 standards... 1 Click Standards on the TurningKey Editor toolbar.
Standards The Select a Custom Standards List... drop-down menu displays the selected Standards List. The drop-down menu allows you to choose from the Standards Lists in your Standards folder. Use the Load button to import a Standards List into your Standards folder from another location. Click the Delete button to delete a Standards List from your Standards folder. Create a custom Standards List in your Standards folder by clicking the New button. 3 Click New. Name the new Standards List.
Standards Assigning Standards to a Question Follow the steps below to assign standards to questions in an Answer Key. How to assign standards to a question... 1 Click Standards on the Question Editor toolbar. 2 Select either the K-12 Standards tab or the Custom Standards tab. 3 Select the test version to apply the standards to from the Current Version drop-down menu. 4 Select the question in the left panel. 5 Select a standard from the list.

Creating a Participant List Creating a Participant List Using a participant list is optional, however it is highly recommended to use a participant list if you would like to track participant results and collect data. How to create a participant list... 1 Click Participants on the TurningKey menu bar and select New Participant List. 2 Select a Participant List Template. 3 Education Contains standard student information used for K-12 and higher education presentations, such as name and student ID.
Creating a Participant List • Click the number of fields or click Back to return to the field selection window. 6 Click Finish. The Participant List Editor window displays. Note A Device ID column is automatically placed as the first column in the participant list. This field can be left blank and the participant will be matched to the user ID entered in the ResponseCard. 7 Double-click on a field and type in the participant information. 8 Press Enter on the keyboard to go to the next row.
Loading a Participant List Loading a Participant List A participant list must be loaded prior to starting the session in order for participant information and results data to be tracked. How to load a participant list... 1 Click Participants on the TurningKey menu bar. 2 Mouse over Load Participant List and select one of the following: Auto Select Auto if you want to collect Device IDs or user information from the ResponseCard XR or ResponseCard NXT to build a real-time participant list. Choose Other.
Printing a Participant List • Remove a Field - Select the field you want to remove. The entire column is now highlighted. Click the Participant Menu button and select Remove Field. • Add a Participant - Select a row by clicking on the row number in the gray area to the far left. Click the Participant Menu button and select Add Participant. A blank row is added to the list below the select row. Enter the new participant information by typing in the blank boxes.

Administering a Test in TurningKey Administering a Test in TurningKey Follow the steps below to successfully administer a test in TurningKey. How to administer a test in TurningKey... 1 Plug the USB RF receiver into the computer. 2 If an Answer Key is not already loaded, click Load Key on the TurningKey toolbar. 3 Select the Answer Key and click Open. Tip A QuestionPoint test can also be used as an Answer Key.
Viewing the Live Results and Feedback Monitor (NXT Only) 8 Click OK. 9 The students can now enter answers into the ResponseCards and submit their test when complete. If a duration of time was set, time may be added or subtracted in one minute increments by clicking the plus or minus buttons in the time window. Clicking and holding the timer button will adjust the time in five minute increments. The timer may also be paused. 10 Click Stop Polling to end the test.
5 Sessions After a TurningKey test is administered and saved, it becomes a session. Sessions can be managed via TurningKey.
Session Management Session Management TurningKey offers several options for Session Management. Saving a Session To generate reports, a session must be saved. How to save a session... 1 From the menu bar, click Answer Key and select Save Session As.... 2 Enter a name for the file. 3 Select the location to save the session file. 4 Click Save Session. Resetting a Session Resetting a session will permanently erase all collected data from the current session. How to reset a session...
Session Management 3 Click Open. The session is now ready to receive additional tests not collected during the original test. 4 After receiving additional tests, save the session. Editing a Session The TurningKey Session Editor allows you to change point values, change or remove a correct answer, add or remove standards and change participant list information. Before You Begin The session you wish to edit must be open in TurningKey.
Session Management 9 10 Name the session and select the save location. Click Save. Extracting an Answer Key from a Session This action is useful if you have a session file but have lost the corresponding Answer Key, or if the Answer Key was created on a different computer. Exporting Exporting Sessions can be exported to a pre-defined export scheme. Exporting Session Results Follow the steps below to export a session to an export scheme. How to export session results... 1 Click Export on the TurningKey toolbar. 2 Select the session to be exported. 3 Select the Export Scheme. 4 Click Export. 5 Name the file and click Save. Exported files are saved as .txt files. 6 Click OK when the confirmation message appears. 7 Click Close to close the export window.
