Introduction Welcome to Toshiba Congratulations! You have purchased one of the finest TVs on the market. The goal of this manual is to guide you through setting up and operating your Toshiba TV as quickly as possible. Please Note This manual applies to models 32HFX71 and 36HFX71. Connecting your TV ANTENNA Coaxial Cable @ If you have not connected electronic equipment before, or you have been frustrated in the past, you may wish to read this section. (Cables are not supplied.) AUDIO Cables • A coaxial cable is the standard cable that comes in from your antenna or cable converter box. Coaxial cables use "F" connectors. VIDEO Cable ¢ • Audio and video cables are usually color-coded according to use: yellow for video and red and white for audio.
Connecting a cable converter box This connection allows you to watch basic and premium cable channels. To use the TV's features, select ANT-1. To view premium channels, select ANT-2, tune the TV to channel 3 or 4 (whichever channel is vacant in your area), and use the converter box to change channels. You will need: Note: Whenyou use a converter box withyour T_, the remote control will not operate some features,such asprogramming your favorite channels,labeling channels,and locking channels.
Connecting and a VCR a DVD player or satellite receiver This connection allows you to watch DVD/satellite, VCR, and TV programs, and record one TV channel while watching another channel.
Connecting a DVD player with component video and a VCR This connection allows you to watch DVD, VCR, and TV programs, and record DVD and TV programs. You can record from one source while watching a program from another source. Your TV has ColorStream component video inputs. Connecting your TV to a ColorStream-compatible DVD player (such as a Toshiba ColorStream-equipped DVD player) can greatly enhance picture quality and realism.
Connecting a DTV receiver/set-top component video and a VCR box with or This connection allows you to watch DTV (digital TV broadcast), VCR, and TV programs, and record DTV and TV programs. You can record from one source while watching a program from another source. Your TV has ColorStream component video inputs. Connecting your TV to a ColorStream-compatible DTV receiver can greatly enhance picture quality and realism.
Connecting two VCRs This connection allows you to record (dub/edit) from one VCR to another VCR while watching a videotape. You can also record from one TV channel while watching another TV channel. You will need: • one coaxial cable • two pairs of audio Caution: Theunauthorized recording of television programs, videotapes,and other materials may infringe upon the provisionsof copyright laws.
Connecting an audio system This connection allows you to use an audio amplifier to adjust the audio level. This also allows you to use external speakers. TV To control the audio, turn on the TV and the stereo amplifier, and turn off the built-in speakers (see "Turning off the built-in speakers" on page 49). Verifying the device code {990} Use this feature to verify the codes for your other devices. The number of blinks after pressing the 1, 2, 3, and 4 buttons is the 4digit code set up for that mode. For example, to verify the device code of the VCR: 1. Press MODE to select the VCR mode. Number MODE 2. While holding down the RECALL button, press 9 -9 -0. 3. Press 1 -+ 0 blinks. 4. Changing the on-screen display language TV front panel Choose from three different languages (English, French and Spanish) for the on-screen display of adjustment menus and messages. Adding channels to the TV's memory When you press Channel • or •, your TV will stop only on the channels stored in the TV's channel memory. Follow the steps below and on the next page to program all active channels into the TV's memory. Programming channels Note: Totune the TVto a channe/not programmed in the channe/memory, you must use the Channe/Number buttons on the remote control automatically Your TV can automatically detect all active channels in your area and store them in its memory.
Adding and erasing channels manually TV front panel After you have programmed the channels automatically, you can manually add or erase specific channels. To add or erase channels: 1. Select the channel you want to add or erase. If you are adding a channel, you must select the channel using the Channel Number buttons. MENU 2. Press MENU, and then press • or I_ until the SET UP menu appears. 3. Press • or • to highlight ADD/ERASE.
Changing channels To change to the next programmed channel: Press Channel • or • on the TV or remote control. Using the TV's features Adjusting the channel settings Switching between two channels You can switch between two channels without entering an actual channel number each time. To switch between two channels: 1. Select the first channel or video mode you want to view. 2. Select a second channel with the Channel Number buttons (0-9, Number loo). 3. Press CH RTN. The previous channel will be displayed. Each time you press CH RTN, the TV will switch back and forth between the two channels.

Viewing the wide-screen picture formats You can view programs that have the conventional TV picture format (4:3 aspect ratio) and the wide-screen format (16:9 aspect ratio). This feature is available for 1080i digital broadcasts and 480p1480i DVD signals connected to the ColorStream HD 1 and HD2 jacks. Selecting the image SIZE shape 1. Make sure the ColorStream HD1 or HD2 mode is selected. (See page 43 for details.) 2.
Watching PIP/double-window The PIP/double-window feature allows you to watch two pictures at the same time. The sub-picture can be a TV broadcast or come from an external source, such as a VCR. To display a TV broadcast as a sub-picture: 1. Turn on the TV and select the program you want to watch. 2. Press PIP once to display a small picture. A window 119 the size of the screen will appear. Press PIP a second time to display a double-window.
Switching the main and sub-pictures Press SWAP while you are using the PIP feature to switch the main and sub-pictures. The main and sub-pictures will switch each time you press the SWAP button. PIP mode ........
Using the multi-window feature The multi-window feature provides two functions. One is the Favorite that scans the channels programmed in the TV memory by the FAVORITE CH function (9-picture multi-search) and the other is the Strobe that is convenient when watching a quickly moving picture such as a sports program. Using the favorite function 1. Press FAVORITE to scan the channels programmed in the TV memory by the favorite channel function (page 27). FAVORITE The 9-picture multi-search will start.
Using the LOCKS menu The LOCKS menu includes the V-Chip, CH Lock, Video Lock, and New PIN Code functions. You can use these functions after entering the correct PIN code. Entering the PIN code 1. Using the V-CHIP menu Some TV programs and movies include signals that classify the content of the program (violence, sex, dialog, language). The V-CHIP control feature in this TV detects the signals and blocks the programs according to your selections. To use this feature, perform the following setup. Selecting the video input source Press INPUT on the remote control or TV/VIDEO on the TV to view a signal coming from another device connected to your TV, such as a VCR or video disc player (see illustrations bdow). You can select ANT 1, VIDEO 1, VIDEO 2, VIDEO 3, ColorStream HD1, ColorStream HD2, or ANT 2 depending on which input jacks are used for connecting the devices (see "Connecting your TV" on page 5.

Using the WOW TM surround sound feature The WC)_ _M surround sound f_ature expands the audio listening field wider and deeper to create exceptional sound quality from the °IXPs speakers. WOW consists of the three f_atures: SRS 3D, FOCUS ,and °I_uBass, being turned on. °Itle feature uses stereo signals from a °IXf broadcast or video input. °Ib adjust the WOW feature: 1.
