MODE Use the MODE key in conjunction with certain keys to activate the following dames. Pressing the MODE key, the display shows the current settings and what keys will activate them. The Mode key must be held down while the other key is pressed to work effectively. LINE SPACING Sets the line space to 1, or 2. PITCH Sets the typing pitch to 10,12, 15 or PS. PAGE END WARNING Sets the length of the paper far the Page End Warning.
P Harare: IMPORTANT: Do not turn the power on until you have removed the Packing Rod. Platen Knob When you open the box you will notice that the two platen nabs have not been placed on your typewriter yet. Use the following steps to place these knobs on your typewriter. To Place the Platen Knobs on the Typewriter: 1. You will notice that the hole in the center of both of the knobs are not perfectly round. Platen knob 2. You will also notice a straight edge on both of the shafts.
Top Cover Open the top cover to remove the packing rod and replace the correction tape, print wheel, or ribbon cartridge. To Open the Top Cover: To Close the Top Cover: Hold the tabs on both sides of the top Swing the cover down. Push down both cover ang pull them up. Swing the cover ends untie you hear a click. up until it clicks and locks in place. Removing the Packing Rod To protect the print mechanism during shipping, a packing rod has been Installed.
Switching On Plug your typewriter in by first removing the AC cord cover. The AC cord cover is on the back af the unit. You'll notice a tab on the upper part of the cover. Push down on this tab and swing the cover toward you. Close the cover by placing the cord in the slot as shown in the illustration and snapping the cover shut. After the typewriter s plugged in, switch it on with the ON/OFF switch located on the lower left side to the rear.
Correction Tape The correction tape is Used to “lift" mistakes right off the paper, which allows you to produce flawlessly typed pages. Perform these steps to install the correction tape. To Install the Correction Tape: . Position the carrier toward the center of the platen with the Space or Forward key. . Tums the power off. . Lift the top cover. . If the ribbon cartridge Is Installed, remove it. (Refer to the ribbon cartridge procedures in this section.} 5. If the print wheel is in place, remove it.
Correction Tape 10. Place the take-up spool on the left spool holder. Feed the tape note the top of the take-up spool. 11. Tum the take-up spool in the direction of the arrows to remove the slack in the tape. 12. Replace the print wheel and ribbon cartridge to complete installation of the correction tape. To Remove the Correction Tape: . Lift the top cover. . Remove the ribbon cartridge and print wheel. . Pull out the empty supply spool on the right. . Pull aut the full take-up spool on the left.
Print wheel The pinwheels are not interchangeable with the print wheels of other brands of typewriters or printers. | To Check the Print wheel Position: Before installing the priestliness, first check to see that It is properly petitioned in its cassette casing. | The print wheels must be centered in the casing opening, with the rectangular hole ‘ exactly at the twelve o'clock position — that Is, directly above the center hole. If iris not, it can be easily moved by fingertip to the correct position.
Print wheel 3. Be sure the print wheel is correctly positioned in its cassette as shown on the previous page, and hold the cassette so that the characters face the platen. 4. Tilt the top of the cassette toward you and slide it into the guide way until it clicks. When the cassette has been properly seated, you should be able to gently rock it back and forth, 5. To complete installation, push the lever back toward the platen fo return the print wheel frame to the typing position.
Ribbon Cartridge To Install the Ribbon Cartridge: 1. Lift the top cover. 2. Remove the shipping fastener from the new cartridge. 3. Take up any slack in the ribbon by turning the colored knob in the direction of the arrow. 4. Holding the cartridge at an angle, place the two "fest” into the slots on the front of the carrier nearest 10 you. Indicator 5. Pull the cartridge back slightly and press it down until it sits flat on the carrier assembly. You should hear a click indicating the drive shaft is engaged.
The PA-8140 contains a two line of 4-characters Liquid Crystal Display. This display shows the currently used modes on the upper row and shows each character that you type on the lower row. By pressing the MODE key, the numbers from 1 to 9 will appear in the lower row. These numbers indicate the keys used in conjunction with the MODE key to activate certain features.

Inserting the Paper Inserting the paper on your typewriter is accomplished quickly and easily, without the use of knobs. Inserting the Paper with the PAPER key: 1. Position the paper guide where you want the left edge of the paper to rest. 2. Insert the paper behind the platen and against the paper guide. 3. Pull the Bail bar toward you. e 4. Hold down the CODE key and press the REV INDEX (PAPER) key. + .. The paper is inserted. A 5. Return the Bail bar.
Moving the Paper Use the INDEX key instead of the platen knobs for moving the paper in the typewriter. Because the increments are more precise, it will be easier to make manual corrections, il in per-printed forms, or realign the paper. To Move the Paper Up: Press the INDEX key 1o move the paper up one-had line. Hold the INDEX key down to continuously move the paper up in half-line increments.
Selecting the Line Spacing Your typewriter offers three Line Spacing selections you can change at will: Single (1), nae-and-a-half and double (2). To Select the Line Spacing: 1. The Typing and Line Ending Modes ‘Your typewriter has three Line Ending Mode choices that you can use along with two Typing Modes. Below you'll find out just how to use them and what they'll do for you. To Use the TYPE and NRM (NORMAL) Modes: 1. Hold down the MODE key and press the number 5 key until MABEL) ‘ the L/L indicator turns off. 2. To Use the JST (JUSTIFICATION) Mode: 1. Margins and Tabs Do you use the same margins and tab settings for the majority of your work? Have you ever had to complete a special typing project the next day only to find your margin and tab settings were erased when you turned off the typewriter? Don't worry because your typewriter has a Line Format memory that saves the last margin and 1ab settings you selected before the typewriter was turned off, In addition, the Line Format memory comes with three per-set Default; settings.
To Set Tabs: 1. Spare or backspace 1o the desired tab location. 2. Press the TAB S key. 3. Repeat steps 1 and 2 for each additional tab. Up to 16 tabs can be set. To Clear a Tab: . Tab to the desired location. 2. Hold down the CODE key and press the TAB S (TAB C} key o l + clear the tab. A 3. Repeat steps 1 and 2 to clear additional tabs. To Clear All Tabs: 1. Hold down the CODE key and press the TAB S (TAB C} key. 2. Press the REPEAT key.
Page End Warning The Page End Warning is a feature that you can use anywhere between 5 and 14 inches to warn you that you are approaching the bottom of the page. To Set the Page End Warning: E 1. Hold down the MODE key. The following will appear in the display: + [ The number in the display will indicate the current Page End Warning setting, however if no number appears, no Page End Warning is set. 2.
5 Time:s; Automatic Corrections Using the AUTO CORRECTION and the AUTO WORD CORRECTION features, you can easily erase characters or entire words automatically. To further simplify this task we've added the WORD BACKSPACE features so that you can backspace word by word, and the RELOCATE feature for getting you back to ware you left off, instantly! To Correct the Character Just Typed: Continue typing. Press the ( <= ) AUTO CORRECTION key. The carrier will backspace and erase the error.
Automatic Corrections To Correct Characters in the L/L Mode: 1. Use the BACKSPACE, WORD BACKSPACE, FORWARD, RELIC and EXP keys to position the cursor one space to the right of the error. () 2. Press the ( <2 ) AUTO CORRECTION or{ <2 ) AUTO b4} WORD CORRECTION key to erase the errors. Holding down the AUTO CORRECTION key will continue to erase (WED) characters to the left of the cursor. Manual Corrections There may be times when you don't notice an error on a previous line or earlier on the page. To go back and correct these errors you can use the Manual Correction feature. To Correct an Error on a Previous Line: 1. Hold down the MODE key and press the number 5 {L/L) key until the L/L indicator turns off. . Press the RETURN key, or hold down the CODE key and press the RELIC (EXP) key to return the carrier o the left margin. .
Micro Backspace Micro backspace is useful for squeezing a longer word into a given space and for fine adjustment of the carrier position for Manual Corrections. It moves the carrier 1/60 inch to the left. To Use Micro Backspace: Enter the following text: The wick brown fox . Position the carrier on *k". . Use the (<521 ) AUTO CORRECTION key to erase "k, and "7". Hold down the CODE key and press the BACKSPACE key Gyps "u”. Hold down the CODE key and press the BACKSPACE key Type "i". .
Required Space and Required Hyphen What if you don’t want a space or & hyphen to cause an automatic rerun? This may happen when a person's name, telephone number, or social security number falls at the end of a line. Two features let you lye within the hot zone without returning the carrier automatically, Required Space and Required Hyphen.
Centering This function can be used when you want to center a page number, date, or other text on a page. To Center Between Margins: 1. Position the carrier at the left margin. 2. Hold down the CODE key and type a C (CENT). + ‘ CF’" The carrier will move to the point midway between the margins, Y — and” & °will appear in the display. 3. Type the text 1o be centered. 4. Press RETURN : to print ihe text and return to the next line. Press TAB : to print the text and move to the next tab stop. Press CODE + .
Bold and Underlining These features give your text a special appearance, Use the BOLD and UNDERLINING features to emphasize ideas or topics. To emphasize text already typed on the line, see the following section, " Word Emphasis™. To Bold As You Type: T 1. Hold down the MODE key and press the number 7 (BOLD) key. + ! Decimal Tab On your typewriter, aligning columns of numbers for statistical documents is made easy with the Decimal Tab feature. To Use Decimal Tab: . Clear all tabs. . Indenting It is easy to indent the first ling of a paragraph using the TAB key. But what if whole paragraphs need to be indented for a report or an outline? With your typewriter you can create a temporary left margin so you don't have to remember to tab or space on every line. To Indent: 1. SPACE or TAB to position the carrier at the point you want to set as & temporary left margin. T 2. Hold down the CODE key and type an | (INDENT). + The IND indicator appears in the display. N 3. Keyboard Il and Accent Keys TFo increase the range of characters available o you we've included a Keyboard Il feature. Characters located on the left side of the keys are accessed from the standard keyboard and those on the right side are accessed using the Keyboard Il To Use the Keyboard II: 1. Hold down the CODE key and press the REPEAT (KB} key. The Encode 4 green light turns on indicating that Keyboard Type in the appropriate character. 3.
Superscripts and Subscripts Superscripts and subscripts are used for mathematical notations, indicating footnotes, and other special applications. Superscripts appear a 1/2 ding above the normal typing line, and subscripts appear a 1/2 line below the typing line. Typing Superscripts: 1. Hold down the CODE key and type an H (SUPER). The carrier will shift a 1/2 line Type the Superscript. The carrier will automatically return 1o the original typing line after the superscript is typed. Typing Subscripts: ] 1.
Word Count When wanting to create a report or article within a certain amount of words, the Word Count feature will automatically let you know how many words were typed up to a designated point. To Use Word Count: FOUNT Insert a sheet of paper by holding down the CODE and pressing the REV INDEX (PAPER) keys. These keys also initiate the Word Count feature. 2. Begin typing or recall a document from the memory. .

Word Count in Memory Use the Word Count feature not only to calculate the amount of words in regular text, but also when wanting to get an idea of how many words have been stored within any text in the memory. To Use Word Count in Memory: 1 COUNT Open the memory. Cursor may be at any position in the document. Hold down the CODE key and press the Qj {COUNT) key. Printing a Document Use the following steps to print a copy of the text you stored in the memory. You will find that you can print lechers or documents from the memory any number of times, while still saving the original in the memory for future use. Editing a Document in Memory Do you spend a lot of time retyping drafts that have to be edited several times? Have you had 10 retype an entire letter because of a single misspelling or typo? With the PA-3140 you can edit text stored in the memory by easily adding or deleting words, phrases, and even sentences. All of your changes will be stored in the memory, so your typewriter plays back your revised document for you, letter perfect! To Edit a Stored Document: MENCKEN 1. Press the MEMORY key.
To edit a document stored in the memory, simply move the cursor to the editing point and delete or add text as necessary. Use the following keys to move back and forth through the memory. Keys to Move the Cursor Through the Memory: S Moves the cursor one space at a time 1o the right. =y (Note the SPACE bar inserts spaces into the text a the cursor.) Search and Replace With the Search and Replace feature, the typewriter will search for a specified string of text and automatically replace it for you. To Search and Replace Stored Text: TERRITORY REPLANT SEARCH 1 Press the MEMORY key, and select the number 1 (CREATE/EDIT} from the task menu and press the RETURN key. The carrier returns. 2. Type the ID of the document you want to edit. 3. 4. Hold down the CODE key and press the MEMORY (SEARCH] key. Press the RETURN key twice.
Block Editing This feature can be used for copying, deleting and moving blocks of text while editing in the memory. Block, used when wanting 1o editing text in an area other than the current text area consist of three separate functions. Copy, which is for copying blocks of text; Delete, which is for deleting block of text; and Move, which is for copying blocks of let and recalling that text into another text area.
Block Editing Block Delete: EMORY o RETURN oL, BLOCK LAY Press the MEMORY key, and select the number 1 (CREATE/EDIT} from the task menu and press the RETURN key. The racier returns. Line Format When storing a document in the memory, you can also store a Line Format along with it. The Line Format can include new right and left margin settings, new tab settings, different pitch or line end, line space, and page end warning settings. To Set the Format in the Memory: 1. Open the Memory. 2. Position the cursor at the beginning of the text. F 3. Hold down the CODE key and type an F (FORM). + "LINE FORMAT" will appear in the display. Y Yy 4.
Stop Codes A Stop Code tells your typewriter to temporarily stop printing while playing back a document from the memory. When your typewriter stops, this allows you to type in whatever you want or {o enter a Phrase or Text from another 1D, This is especially useful when typing a document or Setter with blanks that need 1o be filled in later. To Insert a Stop Code: 1. Type the document in the memory up to the point where you want 1o enter a Stop Gide. s 2. Hold down the CODE key and type an $ (STOP CD).
Listing Storage Area IDs The typewriter will print a list of ID numbers, memory size, and title of each Phrase or Text snored in the memory. To Print a List: . Insert a sheet of paper. 2.
