PREFACE This manual will help you set up, operate, and maintain the SHARP JX-9700F Laser Printer. It assumes that you are familiar with the operation of your computer and with how to send files to be printed. Use this manual along with the documentation for your computer hardware and software. This manual does not provide information about escape cedes and other printer command codes recognized by the JX-8700E Laser Printer.

INSTALLATION REQUIREMENTS Improper installation may damage the printer. Please note the fallowing during initial installation n and whenever the printer has been moved: 1. OPERATION PANEL The operation panel displays information about the current status of the printer and allows you to perform various control functions. Note the following when using the operation panel: « The printer must be set o offline before you can use any of the other keys. * Some keys have several functions, which you select by the duration of time you press the key. Read the descriptions below and other instructions in this manual carefully to be sure of how to select each function.
OPERATION PANEL @ [LINE) key Sets the printer online and offline. The printer must be offline before you request deli-tests, set menu terns, or perform any other functions from the operation panel. The printer must be online io receive data from the computer. Menu setting is performed with this key. However if data exists, the [CONCRETENESS | key Is used. Remove securing tape (A), (B), (C) and (D), and the spacer. The printer is supplied from the factory with the standard paper cassette and most other parts already installed.
INSTALLING SUPPLIES Before you use the printer for the first time, you must add both toner and developer from the initial supply cartridge. For best results, be sure to use only genuine SHARP supplies which are designed, engineered, and tested 1o maximize the life and performance of SHARP Laser Printers. And, install the roller cleaner on the top of the fusing unit. 1. Be sure that the printer is turned off. 2. Open the upper cover.
INSTALLING SUPPLIES 4. Pauli the green tab to remove the seal and open the doors of the developer cartridge. NOTE: If the doors of the developer cartridge are closed and the seal has already been removed, stick a pained object into each of the release holes. The large door should spring open. To open the small door, stick the object into the center of the door. Release Holes 5. Shake the initial supply cartridge vigorously in a vertical direction four or five times. 6.
INSTALLING SUPPLIES 8. Tap the initial supply cartridge several mes to release all the toner and developer, 9. Firmly grip the middle portion of the initial supply cartridge, and gently squeeze lo release the lock mechanism. Then, pivot the cartridge away from you, and lift it carefully so as not to spill toner or developer. 10. Close the doers of the developer cartridge slowly. 11. Remove the roller cleaner from the plastic bag, and install it on the top of the fusing unit. 12.
CONNECTING POWER CORD AND INTERFACE CABLE Power Cord 1. Be sure the power ig turned off, 2. Plug the power cord into the power cord connector at the back of the printer. Interface Cable The JX-8700E Laser Printer is equipped with a Eccentrics parallel interface. NOTE: A shielded, grounded cable and connector are required to comply with either FCC Class B or VDE 0871 and 0875 requirements. 1. Be sure the power is turned off. 2. Remove the protective cover from the connector. 3.
LOADING PAPER The paper cassette automatically feeds paper for standard printing. The cassette can hold about 250 sheets of standard weight paper Ibs. weight). SELECTING A LANGUAGE The messages shown on the display, font printout, and SELF TEST #1 printout can be selected from five different languages: English, French, German, Italian, and Spanish. English is the default setting. If you want io select another language, follow the procedure below. Press the [[INE] key 10 sel the printer offline. PERFORMING SELF-TESTS After you have performed alt the installation procedures, we recommend that you perform the deli-tests to ensure that the printer is working properly. There are two self-tests: SELF TEST #1 and SELF TEST #2.

MANUAL FEED PRINTING The manual feed allows you to print on material other than standard 80 to 80 g/m2 paper, such as heavier paper slack, transparency film, labels, and envelopes. (Envelopes can &lso be fed automatically using the envelope feeder, which is available as an option.) You can also use the manual feed when you want to print on paper that is different than what is currently loaded in the paper cassette.

SETTING MENU ITEMS Printing and Configuration Menus The menu items are organized into two main menus: the Printing Menu and the Configuration Menu. The Printing Menu contains items that determine the final appearance of the printed page. The Configuration Menu contains items that determine the communication method between the computer and the printer. The specific menu items and available values for each item depend upon the printing mode you are using.

SETTING MENU ITEMS Restoring Default Settings The printer restores the pearl default settings (if you have set them) or factory default settings each time you turn on the power. However, many software packages send printer commands which change the default settings. Therefore, it is recommended that you reset the printer to the panel or factory default settings at the start of sate job. To restore panel default settings: 1. SELECTING FONTS Th res types of fonts can be used with the JX-9700E Laser Printer* resident fonts, fonts from font cards, and downloaded ('soft’) foils. You select fonts by specifying the *Font Source,” "Font Number,” "Point size." and "Pitch size" from the Printing Menu of each emulation mode. See EMULATION MODES, page 38, for more information. Resident Fonts Resident lints are foils that are permanently stored in the printer's memory. The JX-8700E provides 14 resident bitmap fonts and 13 outline forts.

TONER, ROLLER CLEANER, AND TONER COLLECTING CONTAINER (TONER KIT) When the message 'REP. TONER KiT" appears on the display (every 5,000 pages), the toner should be replenished. At the same time, the roller cleaner and toner calibrating container should also be replaced. These supplies are provided in the Toner Kit. (See Supplies, page 100.) To replenish toner and replace roller cleaner: 1. Open the upper cover.
TONER, ROLLER CLEANER, AND TONER COLLECTING CONTAINER (TONER KIT) 5. Holding the tore replacement cartridge down with your left hand, turn the «nob clockwise with your right hand to remove the seal. Turn until! the red marks on the seal appear. 6. Tap on the toner replacement cartridge several times to release all the toner. 7. Firmly grip the middle portion of the toner replacement cartridge, and gently squeeze to release the lock mechanism.
TONER, ROLLER CLEANER, AND TONER COLLECTING CONTAINER (TONER KIT) 2. Pull open the toner collecting container cover, which is located on the right side of the printer. 3. Grasp the used toner collecting container between your thumb and middle finger and slowly side it out, being careful to keep the container upright. 4. Put the cap you removed in step 1 onto the used toner collecting container. 5. Insert the new goner collecting container and push close the toner collecting container cover.
DEVELOPER CARTRIDGE (DEVELOPER KIT) When the message "REP. DEVELOPER' appears on the display {every 30,000 pages). the developer cartridge should be replaced. At the same dime, the toner, developer, roller cleaner and toner collecting container should also be replenished or replaced. These supplies are provided in the Developer Kit. (See Supplies, page 100.) To replace the developer cartridge: 1. Open the upper cover.

Remove the used zone filter from the holder by pulling the iab at the bottom. 4. Place the used filter in the plastic bag; seal and dispose of it immediately. 5. Slide the new ozone filter into the holder. 8. Position the ozone filter holder and push down until it clicks lino place.
FUSING UNIT Generally, the fusing unit needs replacement when printing quality becomes per, and the backs of printed pages appear soiled. To replace the fusing unit: 1. Open the upper cover, « Slide the cover release selector into the rear position (@ ) and push Ihe cover release lever forward Grasp brown tabs on both sides of the fusing unit and pull up firmly. CAUTION The fusing unit is hot. Exercise care and hold only the brown plastic tabs of the fusing unit 3.
TRANSFER CHARGER When areas of the page are not printed, the transfer charger s probably the cause, First, fry cleaning the transfer charger. If the print quality does not provenience, replace the transfer charger. To clean the transfer charger: 1. Turn off the power. 2. TRANSFER CHARGER 6. Re rove the transfer charger from the printer by grasping both sides of the charger and pulling up. 8. Clean the wire by moving the clearer from one end to the other in the direction of the arrow. NOTE: Clean the entire length of the wire using one full stroke ~ do nat stop midway. 9. Replace the transfer charger to the printer. 10, To close the printer, lift the cover unit slightly and then push down firmly. 11, Turn on the power.
TRANSFER CHARGER To replace the transfer charger: 1. Turn off the power. 2. Open the cover unit, * Slide the cover release selector into the front position (D) and push the cover release lever forward (@ ). * Lift the cover unit until it clicks into position. The cover unit will remain open in that position, 3. Remove the new transfer charger from the plastic bag. 4. Remove the old transfer charger from the printer by grasping both sides of the charger and pulling up. &.
PERFORMING BASIC MAINTENANCE Cleaning the Cabinet When the printer cabinet becomes dirty or stained, wipe with a soft, clean cloth. If necessary, dampen the cloth with water. Do not use thinner, benzene, or similar volatile cleaning agents, Cleaning the Corona Wires 1§ the printouts are blotchy of streaky, dirty corona wires may be the cause. The printer has two corona wires: the transfer charger and the main charger.
PERFORMING BASIC MAINTENANCE 4. Open the tip of the charger cleaner as shown in the figure and insert it in the corona wire case. * Note that inserting the charger cleaner with its tip closed may break and damage the corona wire. 5. Close the tip of the charger cleaner and slide it only in the direction of the arrow three to five times. 6. Open the tip of the charger cleaner to remove it from the corona wire case. 7. Close the upper cover, 8. Turn on the power.

Remove the left and right thumbscrews that hold the controller board in place by turning them counterclockwise. Do nat remove the central thumbscrew in this step. .

Insert the memory board from the top down by purling the two holes to the projections on the controller board. This can be installed on any unoccupied space. If not installing the interface board, do not remove the front plate. Envelope Feeder 1. Turn off the power to the Laser Printer. 2. Remove the Manual Feed Slot Cover. To do this, first pane the cover halfway by puling both ends of the cover. Then instar fingers behind the center of the cover. Finally pull the cover out by bending it slightly toward you.

Remove the cover farm the connector located on the left side of the printer and save it in case the Envelope Feeder is removed.
