PREFACE This manual will help you set up, operate, and maintain the SHARP Laser Printer. It assumes that you are familiar with the operation of your computer and with how to send files to be printed. Use this manual along with the documentation for your computer hardware and software. INSTALLATION REQUIREMENTS Improper installation may damage the printer. Please note the following during initial installation . and whenever the printer has been moved: 1. Be sure to use the rated voltage from a properly grounded wall cutlet only. 2. OPERATION PANEL The operation pane displays information about the current status of the printer and allows you to perform various control functions. Note the following when using the operation panel: The printer must be set to offing before you can use any of the other keys. Some keys have several functions, which you select by the duration of time you press the key. Read the descriptions below and other instructions in this manual carefully to be sure of how to select each function.

Remove the photo conductor cartridge from the aluminum bag, Do not use a knife to cut the bag. NOTE: » Wuhan placing the photo conductor cartridge on a desk temporarily before installing, be sure to place it on a level desk. Otherwise, this may be damaged. + Tne new photo conductor cartridge is sealed with a black protective sheet.
INSTALLING SUPPLIES 3. Remove the protective sheet. Be sure not to slave any torn pieces in the printer. Inst ailing the Roller Cleaner 1. Pen the top cover while keeping the front cover open, NOTE: Press both sides untie the top cover clicks. 2. Remove the roller cleaner from the plastic bag and install it on the fusing anti. 3. Close the top cover until it clicks. 4. Close the front cover until it clicks.
CONNECTING POWER CORD AND INTERFACE CABLE Power Cord 1. Be sure the power is turned off. 2. Plug the power cord into the power cord connector at the back of the printer. Interface Cable The Laser Printer is skipped with a parallel interface. NOTE: A shielded, grounded cable and connector are required to comply with dither FCC Class B or VDE 0871 and 0875 requirements. 1. Be sure the power is turned off, 2. Remove the protective cover from the connector. Save the protective cover. 3.
LOADING PAPER The paper cassette automatically feeds paper for standard printing. The cassette can hold about 280 sheets of standard weight paper (80 (o 80 g/m® lbs. weight). When using the paper cassette for the first time: 1. Press the cassette eject button fo take out the paper cassette. 2. Remove the stopper by pressing it with your thumb and rotating this as shown below while holding the pressure plate securely with your other hand.
LOADING PAPER 2. Place the paper in the cassette with the corners under the metal corner tabs. Remove some paper if ihe paper is tight under the metal corner tabs. Shake the paper cassette gently to straighten the paper. « Note that the side facing up is the printing side. * Do not load paper above the red maximum height line, or paper may misdeed. NOTE: « Do not apply cil to the roller of the cassette.
POWER SAVE MODE This printer has the power save mode as a default setting to reduce power consumption by reducing the temperature of the fusing unit. If no data is supplied from the computer or no key operation Is performed for a certain amount of time, the printer changes 0 the power save state. However when the printer is in the power save state, it takes longer to start printing the first page because it takes some time to raise the temperature of the fusing unit.
SELECTING A LANGUAGE The messages shown on the display, font printout, and SELF TEST # 1 printout can be selected from five different languages: English, French, German, affiance, and Spanish. English is the default setting. If you want to select anther language, follow the procedure below. 1 . Press the [LINE] key to set the printer offline. 2. PERFORMING SELF-TESTS After you have performed all the Installation procedures, we recommend that you perform the seal-tests to ensure halt the printer is working properly. There are two self-tests: SELF TEST #1 and SELF TEST #2. SELF TEST #1 produces a printout showing current printing and configuration menu settings, and other information about the printer's current status. SELF TEST #2 prints an entire sheet of characters in a test pattern using the internal character sel.

MANUAL FEED PRINTING The manual feed allows you i print on material other than standard 60 to 80 g/m2 paper, such as heavier paper stock, transparency film, labels, and envelopes. (Envelopes can also be fed automatically using the envelope cassette, which is available as an option) You can also use the manual feed when you want to print on paper that is different from that which is currently n loaded in the paper cassette.

SETTING MENU ITEMS Printing and Configuration Menus The menu items are organized int two main menus: the Printing Menu and the Configuration Menu. The Printing Menu contains items that determine the final appearance of the printed page. The Configuration Menu contains items that determine the communication method between the computer and the printer. The specific menu items and available values for each item depend upon the printing mode you are using.

SETTING MENU ITEMS Restoring Default Settings The printer restores the panel default settings (if you have set them) or factory default settings each time you turn on the power. However, many software packages send printer commands which change the default settings. Therefore, it is recommended that you reset the printer o the panel or factory default settings at the start of each job. To restore panel default settings: 1. SELECTING FONTS Three types of fonts can be used with the Laser Printer: internal fonts, forts from font cards, and downloaded (“soft") fonts. You select finis by specifying the "Font Source, "Font Number,” "Point size,” and "Pitch size" from the Printing Menu of sate emulation mode. See EMULATION MODES, page 38. for more information, Internal Fonts Internal fonts are fonts that are permanently stored in the printer's memory.
SELECTING FONTS Fonts from Font Cards Credit card sized font cards are available as optics, and provide fonts that are not supplied with the printer. See Options, page 91, To use & font cred, insert it face up into the font card slot located on the right side of the printer. Insert the end with the two groves into the printer first. Grooves Be sure to insert or remove the font card while the ON LINE lamp and the DATA lamp are off and any self-test or font list printout is not performed.

HP PCL 5 EMULATION Configuration Menu stems The Configuration Menu for the HP PCL 5 Emulation includes the following terns: Interface (Parallel) {Serial) Parallel and RS-232C serial (option) interfaces are available. The printer is preset at the factory for parallel communication. ‘Parallel’ means parallel interface. Timing With the parallel interface, the timing for receiving the acknowledge signal differs depending or the corrupter. Thus, the timing for the acknowledge signal must be adjusted.
HP PCL 5 EMULATION Emulation This item is used to change the simulation mode, PCL 5 page Page protection reserves additional memory for the page image process, protection High resolution technology (HRT) Language lowing the printer to create the entire page image in memory even if a page is too complex. POSTSCRIPT EMULATION This setting is made when the optional PS beard is installed. (Provided as a standard feature in JX-9460P8.) To uss the Post Script Emulation, at least 2 Byte memory is required. POSTSCRIPT EMULATION Multi Gray Technology This technology enables high quality gradation-level printing. Turning this function to ON doubles the number of your gradation: levels. Switch between ON and OFF in accordance with your application. (Turn the function to ON when you want to effect & smooth transition between the gradation levels of your graphics.

EMULATION MODE DEFAULTS Lines per Page The lines per page will always default to the number given below when the printer is turned on.
EMULATION MODE DEFAULTS Printing Width The printing width for each paper size is shown below. This printer provides the HPGL/2 mode and the PCL & mode. The printing width differs between these two modes. The maximum printing width on A4 size paper is 2,400 dots, allowing 80 characters to be printed on one line at 10 cpi. NOTE: When printing 80 characters/line on A4 size paper, in some cases characters may print beyond the paper edge.
OPERATION PROBLEMS FEs This section describes: o Clearing a misdeed « Troubleshooting e F Error and service messages CLEARING A MISDEED The printer stops printing when a misread occurs, and "PAPER JAM” appears on the display. After you remove the missed paper and press the (CONSERVATIONIST] key, the printer reprints the page that jammed. If two pages were in 1he printer mechanism when the misdeed occurred (for example, the page being printed and the page being ejected), two pages may be reprinted 1.
CLEARING A MISDEED A. Cassette: 1. Hack the paper cassette by pushing the cassette eject button. 2. Remove the missed paper slowly and carefully to minimize tearing. If the missed paper is torn, be sure to remove all pieces. 3. Slide the paper cassette into the printer until the cassette locks into place NOTE: When it is hard to remove missed paper from the paper cassette, perform procedure B or C instead of puling the paper by force. B. Inside of Printer: 1. Open the front cover.
CLEARING A MISDEED 2. Look at the inside of the printer for missed paper and remove the paper carefully. « At this dime, keep the paper cassette pulled out. 3. Close the front cover until it clicks. NOTE: « In this case, do not remove paper from the cassette. Removing paper makes the inside of the printer dirty and damages printing duality. » When it is hard 1o remove missed paper, perform procedure C instead of pulling the paper by force.

TONER/DEVELOPER CARTRIDGE AND ROLLER CLEANER The massage "TONER LOW" appears when the tamer life is near the end. {Approximately 500 to 1,000 pages can be printed after this message.) This message appears for approximately ten seconds when power is turned on and then disappears automatically. When the message "REP. TONER' appears on the display, the toner/developer cartridge should be replaced. At the earns time, the roller cleaner should also be replaced.
TONER/DEVELOPER CARTRIDGE AND ROLLER GLEANER 5. Remove the used toner/developer cartridge. + Held the handle on the underdeveloped cartridge and pull it up. . Remove the new toner/developer cartridge from the aluminum bag. . Place the used cartridge in the empty bag, seal and dispose of immediately. 2. Shake the new toner/developer cartridge vigorously four or five times. f 573 Use the handle ‘o hold the toner/developer cartridge horizontally with the rifler side to ihe front side and position it gently.
TONER/DEVELOPER CARTRIDGE AND ROLLER CLEANER 10. Pull the tab to remove the seal while pressing the toner/developer cartridge. 11. Remove the drum protective cover and replace the photo conductor cartridge until it clicks. 12. Open the top cover while keeping the grant cover open, NOTE: Press both sides until the top cover clicks. 13. Remove the new roller cleaner from the plastic bag. 14. Remove the roller cleaner and replace with the new one.
PHOTO CONDUCTOR CARTRIDGE The message ‘DRUM NEAR END" appears when the photo conductor cartridge fife is near the end. {Approximately 500 to 1,500 pages can be printed after his message.) This message appears for approximately ten seconds when power is furred on and then disappears automatically. When the message "REP. DRUM* appears cn the display (every 30,000 pages), the photo conductor cartridge should be replaced. (See Supplies, page 97.} To replace the photo conductor cartridge: 1. Turn off the power.
PHOTO CONDUCTOR CARTRIDGE 6. Insert the new photo conductor cartridge vertically with the drum down along the frame guides, pressing downward firmly (D ). Then, continue to apply downward pressure and place the photo conductor cartridge in a horizontal position until it clicks Remove the protective shes. Be sure not to lave any torn pieces in the printer. 8.
PERFORMING BASIC MAINTENANCE Cleaning the Cabinet When the printer cabinet becomes dirty or stained, wipe with a soft, clean cloth. If necessary, dampen the cloth with water. Do not use thinner, benzene, or similar volatile cleaning agents. Cleaning the Corona Wires If the printouts are blotchy or streaked, dirty corona wires may be the cause. The printer has two corona wires: the main charger and the transfer charger. The instructions below describe how to clean the main charger and the transfer charger.
PERFORMING BASIC MAINTENANCE 4. Remove the charger cleaner from the rear cover. 5. Insert the charger cleaner into the main charger and clean the metal plate by sliding the cleaner as shown below. NOTE: Do nol put cut the cleaner halfway along the metal plate. Be sure to go all the way to either the left or the right end of the plate. 8. Replace the charger cleaner on the rear cover. 7. Close the nonconductor cartridge until it clicks. 8. Close the front cover, 9. Turn on the power.

Remove the charger clearer from the rear cover. Insert the charger cleaner into the transfer charger at the left end, as shown below, and clean the wire by sliding the cleaner to the right. NOTE: » Do not pull cut the cleaner halfway along the wire. Be sure to go all the way to the right end of the wire.
