Introduction ‘Thank you for purchasing Sharp J-730 Ink Jet Color Image Printer. The J-730 offers a varlet features for color hard copies. For proper use, be sure to carefully read the instructions in this manual. Keep this manual for future reference.

4-1 Unpacking JJ¢JJIIJ +Take out the printer out of it packing carton, then remove all shipping tape.
4-2 Releasing the print head shipping mechanism 1. Pull the head holding lever {green) in the direction indicated to release the print head. 2. Remove the rubber shipping cap used during transportation. 1) Open the access cover. 2) Pull and lift the tank cap lever. 3) Remove the rubber shipping cap. Keep this cap for future use.
4-3 Installation and connection 1. Place th printer on a stable and horizontal table. » Keep approx 30 cm between this printer and the wall, ete. Insure adequate space for paper. See Chapter 2. 2. Make sure that the POWER switch is turned off. ~ Turn off the hast computer to which the printer is to be connected, and unplug. 3. Set DIP switch No. 1 and Setting DIP switches specifies the way data is transmitted and received. Eor setting, see page 13. (Rules are different between emulations mode.
Operation Procedure Note: Immediately after setting up, the print may be too light,’ In this case, press SELF PRINT TEST switch until the desired density is obtained.
5-1 Power Make sure that the power cord plug is inserted in an outlet. + Check that the POWER switch is OFF before inserting the cord to the outlet. « Check that the host computer to which the printer is connected is ON. 2. Turn POWER switch on. (EE'FE = indicator s lit, indicator bunks MM = indicator goes out) » POWER indicator lights up and ON-LINE indicator blinks. Approx. 30 seconds later » Hack that the ON-LINE indicator blinks for approx. 30 seconds and then lights up.
After loading paper or Ink supply, close the access cover and press the ON-LINE switch, * LR ON-LINE indicator means that the printer is connected ta the host (on-ling). * Pressing ON-LINE switch toggles between on-line and off-ding states. * When ON-LINE indicator is Iit, the printer i in the on-fine state. * When ON-LINE indicator Is off, the printer is in the off-line state, 4. Turn the POWER switch off, after rigorous the printer. v % Do not unplug without first turning POWER switch off.
5-2 Ink Supply — + The ink reservoir is filled at the factory. + Supply ink only when INK indicator lights up. Otherwise, ink way overflow. Ink supply 1. Open the access cover. 2. Pull up the tank cap lever and lift. Tank cap lever 3. Remove the ink cartridge cap and remount upside down. Insert the cartridge firmly into the ink supply opening. Be careful not fo supply the wrong color ink.
Press the cartridge down unfit the upper and lower seal films break. The ink is then loaded. Check that the all the ink in the cartridge will drain into the pull out the cartridge. 5. Hook the tank cap lever claws on the pin, while pressing the lever down. Close the lever and lock. 6. Close the access cover and press the ON-LINE switch; INK indicator goes out, indicating that the ink is filled.
5-3 Replacing maintenance cartridge + When shipping, the dummy cartridge is installed in the printer the factory. Replace the dummy cartridge with the maintenance cartridge included in the packing. . MAINTENANCE CARTRIDGE indicator lights to indicate that maintenance liquid must be replaced. Replace maintenance cartridge. ‘After replacing, MAINTENANCE CARTRIDGE indicator is reset by pressing the ON-LINE switch. + The used maintenance cartridge contains used liquid.

5-4 Loading the Paper (Part) Paper Types The paper types that can be used with this printer are cut sheet paper, roll paper, and continuous paper. Paper specially made for this printer is recommenced, but other papers generally available can also be used. In that case, use a smoothed paper one. Before use, perform a print test, and check that clear print is obtained. High-density mode is recommended for printing on normal paper. « For special paper, see *Options” on page 123.
N e — Cut sheet guide Use the cut sheet guide with eut paper separator, which is installed at the factory. 1. Assembling cut sheet guide Attach the sliding guides to the guide base as station in the illustration. Using roll paper Be sure o install the paper separator when using roll paper. 1. Attach-paper roll holders to the'machine rear. 2. Remove Right flange from the roll paper flange, and install the paper roll on the flange so that the paper unwinds from the top. Slide the paper bail lever to the front so that the paper can be adjusted. Use the platen knob or the fine feed switch to feed paper. « If the paper is manually fed to the print start line, the space between the 1st and the 2nd line may be too narrow or oo wide. 5-5 Loading the Paper (Part Cutsheetfeeder(option) * How ta remove the paper separator * Remove the paper separator when using the cut sheet feeder. 1. Shift the paper bail lever to the rear friction feed. 2. Hook the front cut shes feeder claws 2 claws}) on the pins, and insert the rear claws (2 claws) into the cabinet holes. 3. Slide the paper guides to the paper width. Shift the fixing lever (arrow{} Jof each guide upright to fix the guides. A scale is printed en the upper side of the cut sheet feeder (0.1" step). Place the left paper guide to the second graduation from the left, that is, 0.2" from the leftmost. In this case, the print starting position s 0.7" from the paper left edge. . Shift the paper set lever upward ("OPEN") so that the paper can be loaded. Up to 100 pes. of paper can be loaded at a time.

5-6 Loading the Paper (Part 3) Printing on OHP film Use the specified OHP film, Other OHP films may require a longer drying time and cause blurred print. 1. Loading the OHP film on the cut sheet guide. 1) Slide the cut sheet guides so that the guides fit OHP firm, 2) Shift the paper bail leveler the rear side (friction feed position). 3) Press PAPER LOAD switch. The OHP film is fed automatically. 4) When the top of OHP film comes up, press ON-LINE switch.
5-7 Checking Printer Operation Self print test J-730 has-a self print test function which cheeks the print quality. Follow the instruction below. 1. Turn POWER switch on. POWER indicator lights up and their ON-LINE indicator lights up after 30 seconds. 2. Press ON-LINE switch. ON-LINE indicator goes out. (If indicators other than ON-LINE indicator are lit, take reassure appropriate the indicators.) 3. Open the access cover, turn the TEST switch on, and close the access cover. Transportation When moving the printer, Hollow the instructions below. 1. Turn POWER switch off. Make sure that the POWER indicator {green) goes out (approx. 50 sec. later). . Unplug the power cord from the outlet. . Press the head fixing lever to the holding position until it clicks. The print head is fixed. . Open the tank cap, and insert rubber cap into the ink supply openings with the rubber cap firmly. . Close the tank cap. . Clean the machine interior. See "Maintenance” on page 41. .
Maintenance To maintain optimum performance of the printer, clean it periodically as described below. Before cleaning, the printer should be switched off and disconnected from power. Cleaning exterior Use a dry, soft cloth ta remove dust and stains from the exterior of the printer. For difficult stains, moisten the cloth with soapy water. Finish with dry cloth, + Do not use benzine or thinner, as these may change the material quality or remove the surface finish.
Lubricating the slide shaft Wipe the slide shaft and place a few drops of lubrication oil on the two slide shafts every 3 months of operation. After lubrication, perform the self print test to print few lines. This operation applies lubricating oil evenly on the slide shaft.
