The following instructions are about maintaining a proper posture during computer use developed through human engineering. Please read and follow them carefully when using the computer. t Do not use the computer on your lap.

Getting Started Overview 27 Status Indicators This sensor detects the ambient illumination of the PC. 1 Illumination Sensor If the ambient illumination becomes dark, the LCD becomes dimmer and the keyboard backlight is lit. On the contrary, if the ambient illumination becomes brighter, the LCD becomes brighter and the keyboard backlight is turned off. 2 HDD/ODD This turns on when the hard disk is or ODD being accessed. This shows the power source and the battery charge status.

About Windows Activation When you turn the computer on for the first time, the Windows activation screen appears. Follow the activation procedures according to the instructions on the screen to use the computer. Press the Power button to turn the computer on. Entering Sleep mode When the computer is turned on, press the computer’s power button once briefly.

Turning the Computer On and Off ► For Windows XP 1 Click the Start Click Turn Off Computer. 1 2 button on the taskbar. 2 Click Turn Off. If the system cannot be shut down due to a system error, turn it off by pressing and holding the Power Button for a minimum of 4 seconds. Please note that turning the computer off by this method may cause a system problem. Chapter 1. Getting Started Turning the Computer On and Off 33 Samsung Fast Start (Optional) These descriptions are for Windows 7 and for supported models only. If you are using the system very often while on the move, use Fast Start to reduce the booting time. When the Samsung Fast Start function is being used, the computer runs in hybrid power-saving mode when the computer enters standby mode or hibernation mode.

Using the computer Keyboard 35 Shortcut key functions and procedures are discussed in the following sections. t The keyboard image may differ from the actual keyboard. t The keyboard may differ depending on your country. The following mainly describes the shortcut keys. Shortcut Keys You can use the following functions by pressing the keys below with the Fn key.

When using an external mouse only, you can turn the Touchpad off. To use the battery efficiently, you can change the battery mode according to your usage environment. Controls the brightness of the keyboard backlight. Mute Press this button to turn the audio on or off. If the audio is muted, the LED is lit. Volume Control Controls the volume.
Chapter 2. Using the computer Keyboard Fn Lock key PgUp key If you press the Fn Lock key, you can use hot keys even without pressing the Fn key. The mouse cursor moves to the top of the current page. + If the Fn Lock is turned on, the button LED is lit. LED (Blue Color) PgDn key The mouse cursor moves to the bottom of the current page. Caps Lock key If Caps Lock is turned on, the button LED is lit. + LED (Blue Color) Other Function Keys Performs the right-click mouse function (touchpad).
Keyboard Keyboard Backlit Function (Optional) The keyboard Backlight are automatically turned on or off depending on the ambient illumination. Therefore, you can easily type with the keyboard when you are in a dark environment or at night. The representative figure of the keyboard has been used, but they may differ depending on the country or the model. Chapter 2.
Chapter 2. Using the computer Touchpad The touchpad provides the same function as a mouse and the left and right buttons of the touchpad plays the role of the left and right buttons of a mouse. To use the touchpad, the touchpad driver is required. A built-in Windows driver and a driver provided by the manufacturer are provided. For a better performance, using the driver provided by the touchpad manufacturer is recommended.
Chapter 2. Using the computer Touchpad 40 Double-Click Function Basic Touchpad Functions Put your finger on the touchpad and quickly tap twice with your finger on an item you want. Moving the cursor on the screen Place your finger on the touchpad slightly and move your finger. The mouse cursor will move accordingly. Move your finger in the direction you wish to move the cursor. Alternatively, press the left touchpad button twice quickly.
Chapter 2. Using the computer Touchpad Drag Function Dragging refers to moving an item to another place after selecting it. Press and hold down the left touchpad button over an item you want to drag and move the item to the new location.

Using the computer Touchpad The Gesture Function of the Touchpad (Optional) t The Touchpad Gesture function may not be provided and the version of the function may differ depending on the model. Some usage procedures may differ depending on the version. Configuring the Gesture Function If the Gesture function is not activated, you can activate it according to the following procedures. 1 Using the Touchpad, you can use the following additional Gesture functions.
Chapter 2. Using the computer Touchpad The Scroll Function Rotation function This function is the same as the scroll area of the Touchpad. Place two fingers over the touchpad and move the fingers as follows to rotate the photo or image. If you place two fingers over the Touchpad and move them up, down, left or right, the screen is scrolled up, down, left or right accordingly.

Using the computer Touchpad Setting the Touchpad Sensitivity If the touchpad reacts too sensitively or the pointer moves unintentionally, please adjust the touchpad pointer speed and sensitivity. 44 ► When using the Elan driver Click Start > Control Panel > Hardware and Sound > Mouse > ELAN > Options > PalmTracking and then adjust the sensitivity.

Using the computer Touchpad 45 Touchpad On/Off Function Locking with shortcut keys Auto-locking when connecting USB mouse If you want to use the mouse only without using the touchpad, you can turn the touchpad off. ► When using the Elan driver To lock the touchpad function, press the + keys. You can set the touchpad and touchpad button settings in the tabs that appear when clicking Start > Control Panel > Hardware and Sound > Mouse.
External-type CD drive (ODD, To be purchased) This computer supports an external USB CD-ROM drive (can be additionally purchased). Check if the interface type of the external CD-ROM drive is a USB type. For detailed specifications, refer to the catalog. Chapter 2. Using the computer Connecting the CD Drive Connect the CD drive to the USB port. t Do not insert a cracked or scratched CD. Otherwise, the CD may break and damage the optical disk drive when the CD rotates at a high speed.
External-type CD drive (ODD, To be purchased) Inserting and Ejecting a CD 1 Press the Eject button of the CD drive. Status Indicator Emergency Hole Eject Button 2 When the CD tray opens, insert a CD or DVD and push the tray in until it clicks. 3 Push the CD tray inward until it clicks. The CD drive status indicator is turned on. t A CD drive’s reading and writing speed may differ depending on the condition and type of the media.
Chapter 2. Using the computer Micro SD Card Slot (Optional) You can only use the micro SD card slot for micro SD cards. You can use micro SD cards as removable disks and conveniently exchange data with digital devices such as a digital camera, digital camcorder, MP3, etc. t You have to additionally purchase a micro SD card with the necessary capacity depending on your requirements. t You can use a micro SD card just like any data storage device. A copyright protection function is not supported.
Chapter 2. Using the computer Micro SD Card Slot (Optional) If a window asking to scan and change appears, click Continue Without Scanning. This will proceed to Step 2 above. 3 To format a memory card When using the memory card for the first time, you must format the card before using it. Formatting a card deletes all data saved on the card. If the card includes data, backup the data before formatting it. You can save, move and delete data by double-clicking the corresponding drive.

Using the computer Connecting an External Display Device If you connect an external display device such as a monitor, TV, projector, etc., you can view the picture on the wider screen of the external device when you give a presentation or watch a video or movie. 50 About the connection cable Users should additionally purchase the necessary connection cables. There is an analog monitor port (RGB) and a micro digital video and audio port (Micro HDMI).

Using the computer Connecting an External Display Device 2 Connect the VGA cable (15-pin) to the connected VGA adapter and then connect the other end of the VGA cable to the VGA port of the monitor or the TV. External Monitor Since pressing the key while holding down the 51 key changes the selection, select a display device. TV Projector LCD n HDMI VGA Adapter 3 l LCD + HDMI Clone Connect the power cord of the connected monitor, TV or projector and turn the power on.
Chapter 2. Using the computer Connecting an External Display Device Connecting through the Micro HDMI port (Optional) t This is only supported for models that support a TV output port (HDMI). By connecting the computer to a TV with a HDMI port, you can enjoy both a high visual quality and a high sound quality. t When a TV provides more than one HDMI port, connect the computer to the DVI IN port. After connecting a TV through Micro HDMI, you have to configure the screen and sound.

Using the computer Connecting an External Display Device t External Monitor / TV is not supported in the DOS Command Prompt window. t Simultaneous output to all 3 (LCD + CRT + HDMI) is not supported. ► For Intel graphics cards 1 Right-click over the Desktop and select Graphics Properties. If a window appears where you can select the mode, select Basic Mode and click OK.

Using the computer Connecting an External Display Device Setting up HDMI TV audio (Optional) 2 54 Change the setting to Digital Audio (HDMI), HDMI Device or Digital Output Device, click Set Default and click OK. You can configure the sound of the computer to be played through the HDMI TV. You have to configure the sound device in the Control Panel whenever you connect the HDMI TV in order to hear sound from the computer on the TV.
Connecting an External Digital Device You can save a file stored on a device onto the computer by connecting a digital device such as a camera, camcorder or mobile phone to the computer and using the file management functions. 2 Chapter 2. Using the computer The Auto run window appears. Click Open folder and view files. If the window does not appear, click Start > Computer.

The SRS Premium Sound function enables you to experience more stereophonic sound using stereo speakers. t The software programs provider may vary, depending on your computer model. Using the computer Wired Network A wired network is a network environment used for a company network or broadband internet connection at home. t You can use wired LAN by using the LAN adapter (Optional). 3 59 ► For Windows 7 Click Start > Control Panel > Network and Internet > Network and Sharing Center and click on Change adapter settings in the left menu pane.
Chapter 2. Using the computer Wired Network 4 Select Local Area Connection and click the right button of the touch pad and select Properties. The LAN Device name may differ depending on your computer’s Network Device. 5 ► For Windows 7/Vista Select Internet Protocol Version 4(TCP/IPv4) from the list of Network Components and click Properties. ► For Windows XP Click General tab and select a LAN driver from Connect using:. Select Internet Protocol(TCP/IP) and click Properties.
Chapter 2. Using the computer Wired Network 6 Configure the IP settings. When using DHCP, select Obtain an IP address automatically. To use a static IP address, select Use the following IP address, and set the IP address manually. 61 Using the WOL (Wake On LAN) function is a function that activates the system from Sleep mode when a signal (such as a ping or magic packet command) arrives over the network (wired LAN).
Wired Network 3 Click Configure > Power Management tab. Select Allow this device to bring the computer out of standby, then click OK. Restart the system. - If the system wakes up from Sleep mode even though there is no received signal, use the system after disabling the function. - The LAN LED may not be turned off if System is shoutdown without disabling the WOL (Wake on LAN) option. - Connecting a wired LAN while using a wireless LAN may not activate the function.

Using the computer Wireless Network (Optional) A wireless network (Wireless LAN) environment is a network environment that enables communicating between multiple computers at home or a small-size office through wireless LAN devices. 63 What is an Access Point (AP)? An AP is a network device that bridges wired and wireless LANs, and corresponds to a wireless hub in a wired network. Connect the computer with the wireless LAN function to the AP to use to the network connection.

If a network key is set for the AP, enter the network key and then click Connect. ► For Windows Vista 1 Right-click over the Network Connections taskbar and click Connect to the Network. 2 Select an AP to connect to and click Connect. If there is a configured network key for the AP to connect to, enter the network key and then click the Connect button. 3 When Connected to the AP is displayed, click the Close button.

Then, click View Available Wireless Networks. 2 Select an AP to be connected and click Connect. If a network key is set in the AP, the network key input window will appear. Enter the network key in the input window and click OK. For a network key, contact the network administrator.

Using the computer Wireless Network (Optional) 67 When APs are found but your computer is not connected to the Internet Abnormal Wireless Network Status When the wireless LAN is not connected If the wireless LAN icon is displayed with an “X” in the system tray of the Taskbar, it indicates that the wireless LAN device is turned off or that there are no available APs. Or the wireless LAN is disconnected. This is the case when an AP with a weak signal has been set to a high priority.
