Custom address plaques are quite expensive and

typically take considerable time to create. This

project will show how a PVC address sign can be

created for less money and in a fraction of the time.

We have tailored this design around the Craftsmen

Style of architecture, but given a font change it

could be applicable to other style homes.

A few features:

• PVC will not rot…do it once and be done

• PVC is easy to work with…conventional

woodworking tools are all you need.

• PVC is chemically welded when glued with PVC

cement, therefore the need for metal fasteners

are virtually eliminated.

• Painting the PVC is not required, but it is easily

painted if desired.

Step 1: Image Development 1.1 – Creating the Design The design can be created in multiple ways: Freehand (if your crafty), Computer generated or stencils from the craft store. Draw Image Trace Image We used Microsoft Word to layout the one used in this project with the following process: Set the paper size to the desired dimension of the sign (ours was 8”x36”) then use the various fonts available to produce the centered layout.

Step 2: Cutting the Design 2.1 – Cut Parts Per the drawing and layout drawing, cut all parts to size with table saw and miter saw Cut Parts Letter Layout 2.2 – Lettering Layout Spray the back of the traced design with adhesive and allow it to dry for a temporary bond. Then place on the boards to be cut. This eliminates retracing to pattern. 2.3 – Cutting the lettering We used a bandsaw with a 1/4” blade to cut the lettering. The centers of the A’s and O’s were cut with a coping saw.

Step 3: Assemble Body 3.1 – Lettering Glue up Using the ID marks on the back board, align and PVC glue the letters in place. Lettering Glue up Assemble Frame Assemble Frame Retention Frame 3.2 – Assemble Frame With the lettering complete, move the frame assembly. Again, we utilized PVC cement, but also added trim head screws for additional support. NOTE: offset the screw as to not interfere with the eye bolt installation process in the next steps 3.

Step 4: Attaching the Legs 4.1 – Install Threaded Insert The leg assembly will require a washer between legs and frame to allow folding for storage. Insert Bolt and Washer Attach Eye Bolt 4.2 – Attach Legs With the insert install, the eye bolt can be secured to complete the frame assembly. 4.3 – Paint Option Painting is not required, but if you choose to paint, now is the time. We used a spray system to apply the base coat, but a brush will work as well.

Step 5: Final Assembly 5.1 – Glue sign into Frame The leg assembly will require a washer between legs and frame to allow folding for storage.
