BEFORE YOU BEGIN Thank you for selecting the new PROFORM XP™ 440 R exercise bike. Cycling is an effective exercise for increasing cardiovascular fitness, building endurance, and toning the body. The 440 R exercise bike provides a selection of features designed to make your workouts at home more effective and enjoyable. reading this manual, please see the front cover of this manual. To help us assist you, note the product model number and serial number before contacting us.
PART IDENTIFICATION CHART Use the drawings below to identify the small parts needed for assembly. The number in parentheses below each drawing is the key number of the part, from the PART LIST near the end of this manual. The number following the key number is the quantity needed for assembly. Note: If a part is not in the hardware kit, check to see if it has been preassembled. Extra parts may be included.
ASSEMBLY • To hire an authorized service technician to assemble this product, call 1-800-445-2480. • To identify small parts, see page 6. In addition to the included tool(s), assembly requires the following tools: • Assembly requires two persons. • Place all parts in a cleared area and remove the packing materials. Orient the Front Stabilizer (32) as indicated by the sticker. 3 32 While a second person lifts the front of the Frame (1), attach the Front Stabilizer (32) to the Frame with two M10 x 80mm Screws (54). 54 1 4. Orient the Upright (2) as shown. Have a second person hold the Upright near the Frame (1). 4 Locate the wire tie inside the Upright (2). Tie the lower end of the wire tie to the ends of the Main Wire (53) and the Frame Pulse Wire (42).
6. Orient the Shield Cover (12) as shown. Then, insert the Main Wire (53) and the Frame Pulse Wire (42) upward through the Shield Cover. 6 12 Slide the Shield Cover (12) onto the Upright (2). Then, press the Shield Cover into the Right and Left Frame Shields (38, 39). 42 53 2 39 7. Orient the Console Plate (11) as shown. Then, insert the Main Wire (53) and the Frame Pulse Wire (42) upward through the Console Plate. 7 11 53 Tip: Avoid pinching the wires.
8. The Console (4) can use four D batteries (not included); alkaline batteries are recommended. Do not use old and new batteries together or alkaline, standard, and rechargeable batteries together. IMPORTANT: If the Console has been exposed to cold temperatures, allow it to warm to room temperature before inserting batteries. Otherwise, you may damage the console displays or other electronic components.
10. Orient the Adjustment Lever (15) as shown. Attach the Adjustment Lever to the Brake Axle (16) with two M6 x 16mm Screws (60), two M6 Split Washers (63), and two M6 Washers (64). 10 16 64 63 15 60 11. Orient the Backrest Frame (5) as shown. Attach the Backrest Frame to the Seat Carriage (3) with an M8 x 20mm Screw (55) and an M8 x 30mm Screw (56). 11 55 56 3 5 12. Orient the Seat (8) and Seat Frame (7) as shown.
13. Orient the Backrest (6) as shown. Attach the Backrest to the Backrest Frame (5) with two M6 x 36mm Screws (69). 13 6 69 14. Plug the Seat Frame Pulse Wire (22) into the receptacle in the Left Seat Shield (41).
15. Identify the Right Pedal (36). 15 Using an adjustable wrench, firmly tighten the Right Pedal (36) clockwise into the right side of the Crank (43). 43 Firmly tighten the Left Pedal (not shown) counterclockwise into the left side of the Crank (not shown). IMPORTANT: You must turn the Left Pedal counterclockwise to attach it. Strap 36 Tab Adjust the right strap to the desired position, and press the ends of the straps onto the tabs on the Right Pedal (36).
HOW TO USE THE EXERCISE BIKE HOW TO ADJUST THE SEAT HOW TO MOVE THE EXERCISE BIKE The seat can be adjusted forward or backward to the position that is the most comfortable. To adjust the seat, push downward on the adjustment handle, slide the seat to the desired position, and then pull upward on the adjustment handle to lock the seat in place. To move the exercise bike, hold the handle on the rear stabilizer and carefully lift it until the exercise bike can be moved on the front wheels.

HOW TO USE THE MANUAL MODE Profile—When a workout is selected, this display mode will show a profile of the resistance settings of the workout. 1. Turn on the console. Pulse—This display mode will show your heart rate when you use the handgrip heart rate monitor (see step 5 on page 17). Press any button or begin pedaling to turn on the console. When you turn on the console, the display will turn on. A tone will sound and the console will be ready for use.

HOW TO USE AN IFIT WORKOUT As you exercise, keep your pedaling speed near the goal speed for the current segment. The goal speed will appear in the display when the speed display mode is selected. iFit cards are available separately. IMPORTANT: The goal speed is intended only to provide motivation.
HOW TO USE THE SOUND SYSTEM 2. Select a unit of measurement if desired. To play music or audio books through the console sound system while you exercise, plug a 3.5 mm male to 3.5 mm male audio cable (not included) into the jack on the console and into a jack on your MP3 player, CD player, or other personal audio player; make sure that the audio cable is fully plugged in. Note: To purchase an audio cable, see your local electronics store.

MAINTENANCE AND TROUBLESHOOTING MAINTENANCE Next, locate the Reed Switch (46). Loosen, but do not remove, the M4 x 16mm Screw (61). Inspect and tighten all parts of the exercise bike regularly. Replace any worn parts immediately. 43 To clean the exercise bike, use a damp cloth and a small amount of mild soap. IMPORTANT: To avoid damage to the console, keep liquids away from the console and keep the console out of direct sunlight.
HOW TO ADJUST THE DRIVE BELT Hold the two M8 Locknuts (67) and loosen the two M8 x 16mm Screws (73). Next, loosen the M10 x 35mm Hex Screw (74) until the Drive Belt (77) is tight. Then, hold the M8 Locknuts and tighten the M8 x 16mm Screws. If you can feel the pedals slip while you are pedaling, even when the resistance is adjusted to the highest level, the drive belt may need to be adjusted.
EXERCISE GUIDELINES Burning Fat—To burn fat effectively, you must exercise at a low intensity level for a sustained period of time. During the first few minutes of exercise, your body uses carbohydrate calories for energy. Only after the first few minutes of exercise does your body begin to use stored fat calories for energy. If your goal is to burn fat, adjust the intensity of your exercise until your heart rate is near the lowest number in your training zone.
SUGGESTED STRETCHES The correct form for several basic stretches is shown at the right. Move slowly as you stretch; never bounce. 1. Toe Touch Stretch Stand with your knees bent slightly and slowly bend forward from your hips. Allow your back and shoulders to relax as you reach down toward your toes as far as possible. Hold for 15 counts, then relax. Repeat 3 times. Stretches: Hamstrings, back of knees and back. 1 2. Hamstring Stretch Sit with one leg extended.
