BEFORE YOU BEGIN Thank you for selecting the revolutionary PROFORM® 4.0 RT exercise bike. The 4.0 RT exercise bike provides an impressive selection of features designed to make your workouts at home more effective and enjoyable. reading this manual, please see the front cover of this manual. To help us assist you, note the product model number and serial number before contacting us. The model number and the location of the serial number decal are shown on the front cover of this manual.
PART IDENTIFICATION CHART Use the drawings below to identify the small parts needed for assembly. The number in parentheses below each drawing is the key number of the part, from the PART LIST near the end of this manual. The number following the key number is the quantity needed for assembly. Note: If a part is not in the hardware kit, check to see if it has been preassembled. Extra parts may be included.
ASSEMBLY • Assembly requires two persons. • In addition to the included tool(s), assembly requires the following tools: • Place all parts in a cleared area and remove the packing materials. Do not dispose of the packing materials until you finish all assembly steps. one Phillips screwdriver one adjustable wrench • Left parts are marked “L” or “Left” and right parts are marked “R” or “Right.” Assembly may be easier if you have your own set of wrenches.
3. While a second person lifts the rear of the Frame (1), attach the Rear Stabilizer (16) to the Frame with two M10 x 105mm Screws (65). 3 16 1 65 4. Orient the Seat Handlebar (10) as shown. Attach the Seat Handlebar (10) to the Seat Carriage (41) with four M8 x 38mm Screws (67). Plug the seat handlebar wire (A) into the Receptacle (42) in the right side of the exercise bike.
5. Attach the Seat (9) to the Seat Handlebar (10) with four M6 x 18mm Screws (25) and four M6 Washers (88). Note: Only two Screws and two Washers are shown. 5 9 10 88 25 6. Slide the Backrest Back (86) onto the Seat Handlebar (10). 6 Attach the Backrest Back (86) with four M6 x 30mm Screws (70) and four M6 Washers (88); start all the Screws, and then tighten them.
7. Orient the Upright (2) and the Top Shield (44) as shown. Slide the Top Shield upward onto the Upright. Wire Tie Have a second person hold the Upright (2) and the Top Shield (44) near the Frame (1) until step 8 is completed. 2 Locate the wire tie in the Upright (2). Tie the lower end of the wire tie to the Main Wire (43) and to the Frame Pulse Wire (42). Then, pull the upper end of the wire tie until the Main Wire and the Frame Pulse Wire are routed through the Upright.
9. Identify the Right Handlebar (20) and orient it as shown. Attach the Right Handlebar (20) to the Upright (2) with two M8 x 16mm Screws (69). Attach the Left Handlebar (7) in the same way. 9 69 7 2 69 20 10. Identify the Rear Upright Cover (57) and orient it as shown. 10 Attach the Rear Upright Cover (57) to the Upright (2) with an M4 x 16mm Screw (77).
11. Untie and discard the wire ties on the Main Wire (43) and the Frame Pulse Wire (42). 11 While a second person holds the Console (4) near the Upright (2), connect the wires on the Console to the Main Wire (43) and to the Frame Pulse Wire (42). 4 43 2 Then, insert the excess wires into the Upright (2). 42 Avoid pinching the wires 12. Tip: Avoid pinching the wires. Locate the two console screws in the back of the Console (4).
. Identify the Right Pedal (21). Using an adjustable wrench, firmly tighten the Right Pedal (21) clockwise into the Right Crank Arm (23). Strap Post Firmly tighten the Left Pedal (not shown) counterclockwise into the Left Crank Arm (not shown). 23 If necessary, press the right strap onto the post on the Right Pedal (21). To loosen the strap, press the indicated tab and pull the strap upward. To tighten the strap, simply pull the end of the strap downward.
HOW TO USE THE EXERCISE BIKE HOW TO PLUG IN THE POWER ADAPTER HOW TO LEVEL THE EXERCISE BIKE IMPORTANT: If the exercise bike has been exposed to cold temperatures, allow it to warm to room temperature before you plug in the power adapter. If you do not do this, you may damage the console displays or other electronic components. If the exercise bike rocks slightly on your floor during use, turn one or both of the leveling feet under the rear stabilizer until the rocking motion is eliminated.

HOW TO USE THE MANUAL MODE Distance (Dist.)—This display mode will show the distance that you have pedaled in miles or kilometers. 1. Begin pedaling or press any button on the console to turn on the console. When you turn on the console, the display will turn on. The console will then be ready for use. Pulse—This display mode will show your heart rate when you use the handgrip heart rate monitor (see step 5 on page 19). 2. Select the manual mode.
Press the Home button to return to the default menu (see HOW TO CHANGE CONSOLE SETTINGS on page 24 to set the default menu). If necessary, press the Home button again. When your pulse is detected, a heart symbol in the calorie display will flash each time your heart beats, one or two dashes will appear, and then your heart rate will be shown. For the most accurate heart rate reading, hold the contacts for at least 15 seconds.
HOW TO USE AN ONBOARD WORKOUT speed will appear in the display for a few seconds to alert you. The resistance of the pedals will then change. 1. Begin pedaling or press any button on the console to turn on the console. As you exercise, you will be prompted to keep your pedaling speed near the target speed for the current segment. When an upward-pointing arrow appears in the display, increase your pace. When a downward-pointing arrow appears, decrease your pace.
HOW TO USE A SET-A-GOAL WORKOUT Note: The calorie goal is an estimate of the number of calories that you will burn during the workout. The actual number of calories that you burn will depend on various factors such as your weight. In addition, if you manually change the resistance during the workout, the number of calories you burn will be affected. 1. Begin pedaling or press any button on the console to turn on the console. When you turn on the console, the display will turn on.
HOW TO USE AN IFIT WORKOUT Press the Map button, the Train button, or the Lose Wt. button to download the next workout of that type in your schedule. You must have an iFit module to use an iFit workout. To purchase an iFit module at any time, go to www.iFit.com or call the telephone number on the front cover of this manual. Press the Compete button to compete in a race that you have previously scheduled.
6. Follow your progress with the display. HOW TO USE THE SOUND SYSTEM See step 4 on page 18. To play music or audio books through the console sound system while you exercise, plug a 3.5 mm male to 3.5 mm male audio cable (not included) into the jack on the console and into a jack on your MP3 player, CD player, or other personal audio player; make sure that the audio cable is fully plugged in. Note: To purchase an audio cable, see your local electronics store.
HOW TO CHANGE CONSOLE SETTINGS Units—The currently selected unit of measurement will appear in the display. To change the unit of measurement, press the Enter button repeatedly. To view distance in miles, select ENGLISH. To view distance in kilometers, select METRIC. 1. Select the settings mode. To select the settings mode, press the Settings button. Contrast Level—The currently selected contrast level will appear in the display.
MAINTENANCE AND TROUBLESHOOTING Do not show Console Inspect and tighten all parts of the exercise bike regularly. Replace any worn parts immediately. Next, locate the Reed Switch (46). Rotate the Pulley (29) until a Pulley Magnet (30) is aligned with the Reed Switch. Loosen, but do not remove, the indicated M4 x 16mm Screw (77). Slide the Reed Switch slightly toward or away from the Pulley Magnet. To clean the exercise bike, use a damp cloth and a small amount of mild soap.
HOW TO ADJUST THE DRIVE BELT Next, loosen the M6 x 20mm Hex Screw (84). Then, tighten the M10 x 50mm Hex Screw (83) until the Drive Belt (47) is tight. When the Drive Belt is tight, tighten the M6 x 20mm Hex Screw. If the pedals slip while you are pedaling, even while the resistance is adjusted to the highest setting, the drive belt may need to be adjusted. To adjust the drive belt, first unplug the power adapter.
EXERCISE GUIDELINES Burning Fat—To burn fat effectively, you must exercise at a low intensity level for a sustained period of time. During the first few minutes of exercise, your body uses carbohydrate calories for energy. Only after the first few minutes of exercise does your body begin to use stored fat calories for energy. If your goal is to burn fat, adjust the intensity of your exercise until your heart rate is near the lowest number in your training zone.
SUGGESTED STRETCHES The correct form for several basic stretches is shown at the right. Move slowly as you stretch; never bounce. 1. Toe Touch Stretch Stand with your knees bent slightly and slowly bend forward from your hips. Allow your back and shoulders to relax as you reach down toward your toes as far as possible. Hold for 15 counts, then relax. Repeat 3 times. Stretches: Hamstrings, back of knees and back. 1 2. Hamstring Stretch Sit with one leg extended.
